Indie kids weren’t trying to be different. The JMs and the Jags and the Mustangs were so darn cheap during the 80s and early 90s so those were the ones the Indie kids could afford. And then they found out that the offsets were so comfy, playable and sounds different than the super strats and teles and but also sounded great too so they just stuck with it.

True story. Second hand (unwanted) clothes were The Thing… and those were the second hand unwanted guitars of the time.
Thank you for a wonderful video, Mike! We're definitely offset fans as well. The Wingman is indeed a mix of our love for both Jazzmasters, but it actually started as a reverse design of our Backwing shape :-) Cheers from Denmark!

A soft case for a guitar that you pay over $1500 for is pathetic. Just because Gibson does it, it doesn't mean it's right. Do better.
@OceanG805

@chrishepbrun1503 It’s not just Gibson, it’s Ibanez and Kiesel and others like that…nothing wrong with it! It’s just what the price calls for these days, plus, it’s not hard to just get a case that fits, no need to knock a guitar brand (A very good one too) for what plenty of others are doing.

@fezy_sg1663 I named Gibson because they were the first to do it, plus I don't have the effort to name the other ones. They are wrong as well. Sure, you can get one, but that's not the point. Paying over $1500 dollars should pay for a hard case. I can still remember that in 2016, I bought a Gibson SG Standard. It came with a soft case, and I was so disappointed. I thought this better not be the trend, and it sadly was. Just because other brands do it doesn't make it right. Two wrongs don't make a right. Someone has to make a conscious effort to be better than the next guy.
Kevin Shields is a pretty nuts and important offset player

For my favorite JM pickup tones, I tend to reference Sonic Youth and Television.

As soon as I got my Jazzmaster last year, I realized I had been playing the wrong guitar since 1987.
Reverend makes my favorite offsets out there, partly because they feel like an original take on the design vs. just a copy of

They're cool. I've played a couple but I've yet to pull the trigger. Ironically, I use a reverend case for my Jazzmaster lol
Started guitar life in 1959 on my brother's Harmony electric archtop. Quickly graduated in 1960 or so, to his brand new Jazzmaster. I know them well and still love them.
60s/70s jazzmasters and jaguars were like $200 in the 80s until nirvana blew up. the reason why there are associations with “wanting to be different” is because these musicians tended to be more working class and self-taught than people who could afford a strat, tele or les paul.
The spark of the journey is a very small part of it. I wasn’t telecaster until I built one. Now it’s my main expression. And making it say whatever I am feeling is the best part of the journey and I truely hope that takes years. Great message 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Dude i love hearing you speak with such passion!! I love your videos, you are trurly inspiring! Thank you!
Just bought my first offset 6 months ago. Been a long time strat player but for some reason I fell in love with the neck on a D'angelico Bedford Semi Hollow with P90s. Struck alot of first boxes for me. First offset, first semi hollow and first P90! I rarely pick up my strat anymore. This guitar is so easy to play and challenges me to play differently as well! Love your videos! Awesome playing! Can't wait to see what you come up with next!
Nick Reinhart got me hooked on the Fender Supersonic!! One of the weirdest/coolest offsets ever!
Mike. You are incredible. The amount of effort and creativity that goes into your channel is amazing. This video was great
Congrats for the channel Mike! I love it. As a filmmaker I appreciate a lot the storytelling and the overall quality. I know that's a lot of work. I have a Wingman too and it's a very good an unique guitar. Not only looks amazing, it's light, confortable and has a very good tone. Not for all tastes, but definitely there is very little to complain about this guitars.
I watch a lot of music KZreadrs, and I have to say, you are my favorite of all, thank you for making these unique and entertaining videos. ❤
I dig your videos bro. Good stuff.
This is by far my favorite guitar channel. I always come away learning so much practical stuff.
Crazy how quickly Baum is making it's name around the globe 🤯 but very understandable! I own a Baum Conquer 59. Which you could maybe describe as an offset semi-hollow tele. I think it's very unique and very well made. Love it!

I love JM’s. Super comfortable to play and I loooove the tones.
your playing has improved since the first videos I watched, but your guitar playing faces are on point now. Defiantly arena ready.
I love the Bigsby on it. Wow. Great guitar
JMs were amazing in my eyes ever since I saw Chris Stapleton use it as his main guitar 🎸
One of my favorite guitars is an HH Jazzmaster I picked up at Chicago Music Exchange and pimped out. Body shape is very comfortable and I love the neck I have on mine. Highly recommend the Mastery Tremolo (bridge too if you're money bags status) but I barely ever used the trem until I upgraded. Now, I play everything I used to save for my Strats on a Jazzmaster. Subsequently, I have been exploring all the offset options for things I might not have given a chance before. Baum is doing a lot of thing right on these.
Man! A great video once more. I'm into offsets for a long time, but nowadays I've become a tele guy. You're an inspiration for me. Tomorrow at noon (here in Brazil) I'll be dropping a video about "playing an Vox AC30 in a bedroom". I started recording more videos because of my admiration for you and some other equally great KZreadrs, like Rhett Shull. Be blessed my brother in Christ.
My Smitty (awesome Dutch builder) Jazzmaster is now on order. I got on the offset train a few years ago when I bought a Squier Affinity JM just for fun. Turned I really really liked it and started think about the specs I'd want in a custom jm. Having already bought a custom built tele by Smitty (which is awesome in build quality and tone), I knew he had order the JM from him. Can't wait to receive the guitar😍
They are very comfortable to play and very versatile. I really like their circuit with the dedicated rhythm setting. The only issue is the bridge but there’s the nice Master bridge retrofit.
Another great video, Mike… It’s great to see you having fun with these guitars… I don’t have a lot of experience, but I love me a Firebird..
You are one of the KZread greats!
I have 3 Baum guitars. 2 wingmen and a conquer 59 and I LOVE them
This channel is like your guitar diary, describing your journey as you open your mind, change your opinions, and experiment and learn. I suspect it doesn't end here.
Great video! I own a Baum Wingman and it's one of the best guitars I've played: great sound, really comfortable and last but not least, looks awesome! It has become my go-to guitar for live shows
Everyone say "GWAR" Now everyone say "Jaguar" The word Jaguar does not contain the letter "i" That is all. I'm a huge offset fan. Loved this!
Have you looked into the G&L Doheny? Those pickups combine with the G&L PTB tone circuit to do great things, and that goes at least triple for the Doheny V12.
I’ve been a fan of the Jazzmaster since 2005 when I first saw one on stage it was a beautiful day and after I haven’t played anything else.
BAUM BAUM BAUM! Great! Enjoy your beautiful new instrument.
I love the Jazzmaster shape, and am glad that they're trendy now. Hopefully, there will be more H H models in the future.
I went out and visited my local guitar shop the other day, looking at all the beautiful Strats, Teles, and Les Pauls, and I happen to see this brown Jazzmaster, and I found it to be the most comfortable guitar I’ve ever played, even more that a Strat. I also liked the Meteora as well. The least comfortable was the Telecaster. I had never held a JM, Jag, or Meteora before, so it was quite a surprise. I’ve got a pretty good idea what my next guitar it going to be.
Love offsets. I’m a big fan of the SX Liquid. I used to have two, but I sold one with humbuckers and kept the older one with 3 P90s. Has a sort of fat strat sound and despite its odd shape, is super comfortable.
Always associated Jazzmasters with surf music., Really love Bambi Molesters and their sound but Larkin Poe is what did it for me as far as wanting one. Picked up a Squire Classic Vibe, and fell in love with it. Now I have added a G&L fullerton deluxe Doheny, a Tonebakery with firebird pickups and a Jazzmaster acoustasonic from IYV. Working on a Jazzmaster build with Trisonic pickups. Even a Firebird which is technically an offset. I'm hooked on the offset body guitars now. Look at the G&L fallout. Offset body but closer to a strat shape. It's a great guitar.

I really want a double-humbucker Fallout with a 24.75" scale length and a blade swtich, either standard humbuckers or G&L F-100 humbuckers. EDIT: The Doheny V12 humbuckers might be cool.

I picked up an import Doheny. With the bass and treble roll off switches you can dial in TONS of different sounds. Why is G&L the only ones doing that? Apart from custom and active setups.

@@theemrsgReverend Guitars has their own take on PTB, using a 500kΩ volume pot and a different bass capacitor. The electric guitar industry is so dominated by marketing trends that it is pretty easy to name a combination of a few features which cannot be found on any production guitar at any price (judging by Sweetwater, Chicago Music Exchange, Guitar Center, Andertons, Thomann, and smaller independent stores). For instance, the upcoming Chapman Guitars Pegasus is the first time I have seen a production guitar with these five features: 24.75" scale length, 1.650" nut width, two humbuckers, blade selector switch, and a flat hardtail bridge to facilitate a flat neck pitch (as opposed to a Tune-O-Matic or tall wraparound such that the neck is angled). Schecter offers that with a longer scale length (e.g. Omen Elite-6), and Ibanez adds a wider nut to the same longer scale length (e.g. RG421).

You can play rock, blues, jazz and fusion on anything with strings and a neck. It all comes down to setup and settings/amplification. Never had a Jazzmaster but I love P90's so I feel I've been missing out. The problem isn't wanting one, it's finding wall space to put it.

@@gdawgs101 Thanks and you're right. Shows how little they've been on my radar. The only "Jazzmaster" I've played in the last couple decades or so was a Suhr which definitely had P90's.
Thanks for the episode. I really enjoy offset guitars. I also own a American Jazzmaster II, and also a Rivolta Mondata VIII. With its 3 firebird pickups and it's 7 possible combinations, it's a weird hybrid between a Firebird and... a Strat! Lot of great tones in this unique instrument. You should check it out. Keep on! Best!
I've always liked the jazzmaster partly because the indie kid thing but main as a lefty, it's a thing I could never have. It's getting to try something new that I never could have before
200k?! When did that happen, lol congrats!
When I took lessons in 1982, Fender Mustangs cost between $150 and $200. I liked Mustangs because I have short fingers and Mustangs necks were shorter. I can't believe how outrageously expensive original Fender Mustangs have gotten.
that things looks killer
I learned guitar on a 60’s Jazzmaster loaned to me from my Uncle back in 1997. I just now got one … the excellent Squier J. Mascis Jazzmaster (my only non-American Fender!)

I love that squire more than my expensive American guitars. Super value.
i think you'd love a fender/squier starcaster (es-335 rival semi hollow) although there doesn't seem to be many about.
That looks beautiful I must say, I follow Baum on Insta and their guitars are 🔥 Offsets are soo comfy to play and often have interesting pickup and switching configurations which can be inspiring. Great content, keep it coming.
Great video. when are we getting the review on the line 6 pod express?
Offset shape is great to play sitting. I own a Jaguar and it's cool. Heavy, but very comfortable to play. And I play sitting in 99% of cases. Also I own a kinda offset-ish strat Cort G280, very comfortable too. And normal strat shape is not as comfortable for me.
Love my offsets, all three of them. Welcome to the club. BTW I do not play ANY indie tunes. I do need to find a G&L Doheny to feel complete.
That wingman is sweet! I'm a fan of offset guitars, but I generally like almost all guitar shapes unless they get too pointy. :)
I'm currently learning guitar and I just think the Jazzmasters look sick! I'm torn between getting an acoustic or Jazzmaster for my 2nd guitar. Heck even throw a Tele in there.
My off-set of choice is the Music Man Albert Lee. They make it in SSS, HH, and Triple and double P-90’s
Thats a great looking guitar; I've been putting a lot of thought into the wingman. Offsets are my obsession at the moment😂😂
Funny note on Kurt, his favorite guitar before passing was actually a dual humbucker Telecaster. Before that, the real go-to for him was his studio-only custom Ferrington that was like a mustang copy with some strat features and a stop tail. Really wild design but studio and writing only. Never live.
Jazzmasters and Jaguars were initially sort of rejected when they were introduced a thousand years ago but by the 90s were the go-to due to being so cheap and yes, fun to play! Fun fact lol. Love your videos mi amigo
I like offset guitars, but I am a strat cat and always wil be. Now, I tend to prefer humbuckers in the bridge, and sometimes a double bucker, or HSH or HSS configueration, but if it comes down to a guitar with the right confugeration and a SSS strat, I'll take the strat. Because it's just the perfect form factor. I love the feel of a strat, the spank of a strat, everything. So much so that I will work around the faults of a particular strat if the otpion comes down to a strat and any other guitar.
Harmony Silhouette or Fender Toronado if you don’t want a wiggle stick. Fender Jaguar or Guild Surfliner if you want a trem. Though that Baum guitar looks and sounds awesome! I prefer that non-reverse Firebird to the traditional reverse one which looks weird to me.
I have gassing for these guitars for a while.
Certain things call to you, from when I first picked up bass I always visioned owning a Jazz in my head until I got one (which has been my main bass for 30+ years)
If you like G&Ls would highly recommend looking at the new harmony guitars. They are being built by the heritage guys now. I have a rebel and love it. It’s on par with my Comanche. The harmony silhouette looks like their offset. Also G&L has an offset now too. The doheny. My buddy got one. It sounds great. Sounded very close to my asat deluxe.
I started learning classical guitar before I picked up my first electric guitar which is a strat. I was always curious about what a jazzmaster sounds like
Kevin Shields (MBV) and Tom Verlaine (Television), two significantly different JM tones but both gather some unreal sound!
I can't wait for you to discover Johnny Marr
Dude fender starcaster! It’s literally like someone combined my three favorite guitars into one. Jazzmaster, Epiphone Casino, and Tele Deluxe!
It is true it is true I bought a jaguar CV because I didn’t wanted to look all standard with a start I gotta tell you I tried it and I just was craving the strat tone, but at the end I really started ti appreciate the tone of the jaguar it is messy and you have to fight with the eq but it kind a grows in you no pun intended
I've been a Fender player since the 90's starting with Stratocaster (check reverb for counts on 90's Strats vs. all other models). Moved on to Telecasters in the 00's, and picked up an offset in 10's. For me, the win for the offset is the tremolo and part of why I always go back to my Jazzmaster and Jaguars. That's a pretty-looking guitar, but the Bigsby feel is too stiff for me
I’m still working on getting my hands in the right place. One day I’ll chase tone 😀🎸
Played a 93 Fender Jazzmaster in 93-97 because of J Mascis, Swervedriver and MBV. Never truly liked the Fender and regrettably sold it in 97. Bought a Squier Jazzmaster in 2018 and it's better than the 93 Fender in every way. Trickledown has been very good to it. Very comfortable guitar to play and I can get a sound out of it vs a Strat, which I can never seem to get to sound good.
Lynard Skynards guitar player used a Fiver bird 5 for many many years. I think it's what recorded sweet home Alabama and Gimme Three Steps and many more
My first guitar was a Peavey Predator (when they were still American made), but I was a big fan of bands like Sonic Youth. So my stepdad surprised me with a MIJ (CIJ? Can’t remember and it’s in another room right now) and it’s still one of my favorites. Enjoy digging into things like Sonic Youth and shoegaze, lots of cool sounds out there.
Ok yeah but how do I play guitar like Paul Leary
7:51 makes me wonder where all the offset hollow-body guitars are.
I recommend you check out the G&L Doheny. They're pretty nice and their vibrato is so much better. Puresalem has some kino offsets. If you want fit and finish to on point without custom shop prices you should import a Made in japan jazzmaster or jaguar or maybe even a mustang. Construction is unparalleled, however, their pickups are voiced for speakers and amps from Japan, so it leaves something to be desired so a pickup swap maybe neccesary. The mij jazzmasters simply don't sound like jazzmasters. They're wired more like a p-90 like a J Mascis jazzmaster. I got a jag with block inlays which is gorgeous and those pickups it came with are good enough I guess.
Long live Baum! I love my Wingman, it’s one of the best guitars I’ve ever played
Just bought a Squire Paranormal Offset Telecaster as my first guitar. It’s pretty nice but I honestly don’t know any better 😂
Fender Duo-Sonic (is the offset guitar that I currently play)
I like offset guitars but i equate them with washed out reverb sounds and delays. I much prefer a more natural sound with these guitars
one of my favorite Jazzmaster players is Jessica Dobson of Deep Sea Diver. Impossible Weight has some real rich Jazzmaster tones.
You would love the playability of Elliott Guitars… in terms of offset… their Tonemaster and 357 James Duke signature models will tickle your sonic frenzy!!!!
Bruh this dude is always baked in his videos haha gotta love it 😂
i always liked offsets becacuse they werent strats, or les pauls, or SGs. they were jazzmasters, jaguars, mustangs, jag-stangs and that's why i loved them, sure an HH stang is gonna sound nearly exactly the same as an HH strat becasue they are both humbucker guitars, or an S-S jag is gonna sound almost the exact same as an SS strat since again, they are both guitars with the same type of pickup on them, but atleast they're original, i've never owned any strat or les paul or tele in my life, i have a stang, a plank from home depot i turned into a guitar (and a REALLY good one at that) and a cheap PRS copy that cost me 200 dollars that plays excellent and sounds, like a guitar with 2 ingle coils in it, i it used to have humbuckers on it though.
Oh No, you have gone to the offset side... :o I like all guitars :p
Baum, my dream♡
Congrats that Wingman is one of the best sounding Guitars for me
You always do such a great job on your vids. Why not a Fender? Anyway, I saw Chris Stapleton killing it on his ‘62 reissue Jazzmaster (that I mistook for a Jaguar) and went and bought myself a Squire Jaguar bass I needed for my home studio. I was pleasantly surprised! I didn’t like those shapes at all like you, but I have come around after 50+ years of guitars…lol. Thanks for this review!
My initial reaction when first seeing one was it reminded me of a …Non Reverse Firebird.
I feel like you would enjoy one of the St Vincent guitars. They vary in quality in my experience but I found one I’ll never part with.
I bought a jazzy as my first electric guitar and honestly I just hated the way all the other guitars looked. Other guitars have grew on me but I’ve never felt bad about my choice. Even as a “inde” kid
its all preference and if I'm being honest with myself guitars Ive liked in the past play a huge role on what I like going forward because things feel differently. I find body shape on an electric guitar plays about as much a role in the sound as the strap I use to sling it. But it has to feel right,. I definitely get that. It's each to their own Jazzmasters are cool , But I can't own a guitar without a hot bridge hum bucker at this point in my life. I won't say a Jazzmaster isn't a nice instrument but its definitely not going to do what I need it to do, Who wants to own just one guitar anyways, Im less worried about finding the one perfect guitar anymore and more concerned about finding a bigger rack for all the ones I want to keep
you need to show us your guitar collection
You should check out duesenburg guitars.
