It’s Time We Reframe Grief for Children | Kate Atwood | TEDxBigSky

Kate Atwood, the founder of Kate's Club, makes a moving and compelling case for the urgent need to reframe grief for children who experience the death of a loved one. Having lost her mother at the age of 12, Kate explains how we must work to connect bereaved youth in order to ensure they live healthy, healing, and connected lives because childhood grief is a lifelong journey.
Kate's Club is a non-profit organization in Atlanta, GA that supports children and young adults who are grieving the death of a loved one. Through programs held at its Clubhouse facility and throughout the community, Kate's Club aims to create a world for children where grief is good. Needed this so much. We lost my mom in August. She was a part of my & my kids’ lives for almost 20 years, living with us until her physical needs were beyond what I could help with. My 11 year old opened up to me today (12/15 /21) about his grief. He said they were given a writing prompt “if you had a time machine, where would you travel to and why”. He said his first thought was “I’d go back to before grandma passed and tell her I love her and goodbye - because I didn’t get to do that.” (Hospital only allowed one person with her during those last days). Thank you for the reminder that I need to make sure we are connecting and he is processing as well.

Thank you for speaking on the topic of childhood grief. I recently loss my 18 year old son; and have a 15 year old son. As a bereaved mother, I will be sharing your truth with younger my son as he too, is mourning the loss of his brother.

I never knew this about you when we were in High School, and you were Student Body President. You were very gracious, as if nothing major had happened. You rock Kate!

I agree with so much that she says, just not necessarily saying that grief is good. That's ok; no two people agree about everything. With so many kids losing parents to overdose deaths, this lady's message needs to be spread throughout our country & the world.
