FZ was special and unique. Let's leave other musicians out of this conversation, shall we? FZ was like no other!!!

Say what you will about FZ, one thing can't be denied: he was the real deal. He never sold himself out, never went after the money or glamour or fame by taking a knee to the things he felt were a compromise to his rationale. He was certainly the most transparently intelligent person to ever come out of the counter-culture rock scene of America.

People like to conflate opinionated/confident with intelligence. In hindsight, Frank was right about many things, but wrong about many things as well. Just look at how his children turned out - a bunch of self-entitled spoiled brats who only communicate with one another through lawyers. That speaks volumes of the values they were taught by their parents. I recall one of them saying that their dad used to bring groupies home and let them stay in their house, even while their mother was there. That would mess any kid up.

Paul West: Zappa was a pretty unique individual, but I wouldn't exactly say he was never interested in money or fame. Zappa's net worth was $40 million. That's not the wealthiest, but it's not exactly chump change either. His house in the Hollywood Hills was sold in 2016 for $5.4 million. 8000 sq. ft., 7 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, swimming pool, recording studio. It's a pretty good-sized house. Not sure what it's worth now. As for fame, he rubbed plenty of shoulders with the rich and famous. The word balloon on "Cruising with Ruben & the Jets", although funny, kind of sums it up. @@MrFreeGman I'd be interested in knowing what he "was wrong about". I differ with your description of the kids. His kids turned out fantastic. The infighting isn't as simple as it comes across. If you ask me, Dweeze and Moon have handled themselves fantastically during the chaos that ensued after Gails death.

absolutely and I believe that if more parent's were to be more open-minded and have the "True" and "Real" bonding as the Zappa" Family has and not to be the cloned pre-programmed "All American Family" then I believe most would not grow-up to be messed-up!! @peroh Yeah i dont know if its really true but he claims in his Biography that his dad druing the 1950 worked in the weapon Industry and they had radioactive material under the Kitchen Table But yeah the smokeing, his unhealthy diet. And probably also had a unhealthy sleep shedule. Anyways he was arround long enough to give us like 48 great Albums

This is such a sweet tribute to a good and genius man who was a loving father and husband. So annoying he died of something that if had been caught in time would still be here with us today!

My dad always said the same thing....youve never been to jail and you're not a junkie and live on your own. I did my job.. Glad my Dad didn't put a lot of pressure on me or tried dictating a direction I should be goin.

Frank was more than an incredible guitar player/arranger/composer. His socio-political commentary is as much a part of his legacy as his music.

Recently saw Dweezil performing the entire Hot Rats album live with a group of wonderful musicians. It was phenomenal. Dweezil has become an even more talented guitar player than his father. It was beautiful

It is my understanding that Dweezil was in the basement where Frank had a bunch of old stuff stored and found an old smashed up, burned up guitar and asked him what that was from and Frank told him it was Jimi Hendrix’s guitar he burned at Monterey. He got it from dad and rebuilt it and uses it.

Frank has been my mentor throughout my teens and into my adult life . When he died it was close to losing a personal friend or family member. I still listen to his music regularly and am glad that you can still experience his music live mainly thanks to Dweezil but also other great musicians in including the amazing Rachel Flowers. For me the greatest artist of the 20th century. It would have been great if cancer had not robbed him of his chance to stand as an independent candidate for the US presidency. He would not have got in but would have definitely made a positive impact on the minds of the people

Moon used to dance to Stravinsky. When I was a kid, I used to dance to Herb Alpert, Bola Sete, and The Mothers "Call Any Vegetable".

I still miss him. Saw him 3 times in the 70s. There never was and never will be anyone like him. Glad to see he was a loving dad.

So happy I was able to attend a Zappa concert. Can't wait to see Dweezl's band again, they rock!

It is my story from meeting Frank in London when publicising the Mother's first European tour in 1967 and ended up living and working in his house with Gail, Moon Unit, and seven others, thus the book's unique access.

Out of all his kids I think Moon is the one most like her dad, her sense of humour, her intelligence and just the way she carries herself, no wonder her dad is so proud of her ⚡

I love Frank. I'm a 40 year old middle aged man with two boys of my own. I'v been listening to Frank since age 11 and couldn't imagine a world without his music in it.

@@zim1966 55 here and a friend played Apostrophe for me and that was it. Sheikh Yerbouti, One Size Fits All, Overnite Sensation, Apostrophe, You Are What You Is, SLeep Dirt and Shut up & play Yer Guitar got me through high school and it was helpful in college as well because I was watching the Documentary Baraka and the timelapse portion that begin in a subway in japan then a chicken factory and then to car traffic and pedestrian traffic is precisely when I w as listening to Put a Motort In Yourself from Civilization Phaze III and it went perfectly with the film so I dubbed it and presented it in a sociology course and it also helped me get an internship in a multimedia program in college that was quite difficult to get into at the University I attened in the late 90's. I was able to attend one FZ show in Boston at the Orpheum theater 36 years ago last week. 1984 with my foster brother Mark who had a big ole Bonneville and no license and I had a license. I introduced him to Zappa and we used listen to Sheik Yerbouti and laugh like crazy. We were both weird odd kids so Frank gave us validation that we were ok and didn't have to be like everyone else. The first tour of ZpZ I went with my son and at the same venue I saw Frank at in 84. That was special for me. I've been to ZpZ the first 4 years for a show. the first 3 with my son. I still listen to Frank and I am glad he spent the 88 tour talking about the religious right, Roberston, Falwell et al....because if you listen to Jesus Thinks You're a Jerk is the very same people that got behind Trump in 2016.

You dont often see footage of Frank as the husband, the father, the family man... Frank influenced me musically more than anyone and do the point he has always felt like family to me. Never met him, but I miss him dearly. This touched me to the point of tears. Excellent collaboration here and thank you.

He produced Grand Funk ' Good Singin' Good Playin'... Fuckin' killer album

Very well put together film. Touching to see him as a dad. Moon as a little kid danced to Stravinsky, haha, love it.

Wonderful doc/retrospective. So glad that Dweezil continues to perform his Dad's music. Dweezil is truly a brilliant musician. Frank is deeply missed!

At times Frank could play in a half arsed way depending on the mood. But seeing Dweezil play his dads music it's sometimes played better by dweez. If only Frank was here to see how good he plays his music, Frank would be unbelievably proud.

It's too bad testing for prostate cancer wasn't taken seriously enough back when Frank had it. A simple PSA blood draw indicates the need for the next test, which is a needle biopsy. That one's painful. My prostate was about 20% cancerous. Got 9 weeks of IMRT radiation treatments and the cancer's been gone since. That was three years ago.

I had a general exam with a new doctor in my mid '30's (in the early '90's), he was very adamant about checking for prostate cancer. He explained he missed a prostate cancer diagnosis on a patient a number of years before and vowed never to let that happen again.

I will never stop hating the medical industry for missing Zappa's cancer until it was inoperable. We'd still be enjoying new Zappa compositions to this day and his fam would still have him.

He had visibly "fallen off" which means unusual graying, aging, appearance change but he had known for quite some time. Those involved should make restitution.

An Excellent, comprehensive documentation of life in the family. There were several interviews I had not seen before. Frank was a true Artist. He was a brilliant guitarist, a superb composer, a matchless bandleader, a movie producer, a record company executive, a human rights activist and an incomparable social satirist. He was a prolific workaholic who left behind a staggering body of work. A true genius ..... R.I.P. frank (outstanding ~ thanks for the post)

Frank Zappa was a true original and observant of how culture was going and sadly he was right. This is a wonderful insight of a man who refused to be categorized in any way...

Hes buried in an unmarked grave, such a humble human being. Thankyou Mr Zappa.

I saw Dweezil play his 'Zappa Plays Zappa' live in Charlottesville, VA a few years back. He was using Frank's S.G. guitar that was customized by Frank when he used it. Dweezil and his band were as professional as Frank. They played "Roxi and Elsewhere" album. The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. It was A++.

@@PedalScience Gail caused all that by goin against everything Frank stood for. She left 30% of the Zappa trust,to Ahmet and diva and moon and Dweezil 20% each. Then Ahmet stopped Dweezil from from using the name. Ironically dweeil is the only one in the family who can play a instrument. He's keeping Frank's music alive, and doing a excellent job. Hes playing music that Frank never got around to releasing. We'd of never heard of a lot of it if it wasn't for Dweezil. Ahmet even wants a slice dweezils merchandise. He's not allowed to call his show'Zappa plays Zappa. He calls it, 'Dweezil Zappa plays whatever the fxck he wants'. Ahmets a cock end. Met Dweezil after a gig in Liverpool, England. He was a absolute gentleman. Signin all our shit for us and letting us take pics with him. He had more questions to ask us, than what were asking him. He wanted to talk about Liverpool City and of course the beatles

At the end of this film I had tears in my eyes. This man was really special in all imaginable ways and I am not surprised that his offspring are at least as amazing. Thanks Frank!

A good, honest Artist. Love him. So glad he existed. Wish I had a Dad like Frank.

I think there was some trauma in Zappas early life/career when he was jailed for a misdemeanor. It was basically entrapment, when undercover cops asked him to make a sex audio tape for them with girls moaning. That was when he lost a lot of trust in the system and may have made him a sort of cynic on society, Americana and stupidity in general.

I think a lot of his cynicism stems from his Catholic upbringing, but yes, his arrest and incarceration on trumped up obscenity charges definitely cemented his outlook on American society and its obsession with making a target of anyone who didn't fit the mold.

George Bernard Shaw had an interesting quote on the word cynicism as you two have ascribed to Frank here. He said, "The art of accurate observation is called cynicism by those who don't have it".

Experiencing Zappa live (twice in my life) will always make me feel fortunate. Gone too soon & missed big time !

He died young, but he accomplished so much in his life. one of a kind.

Frank must have gotten real sick of interviewing him asking about his kids names like it was the most interesting thing about him.

Love his music. Didn't know him personally, though what I did know of him, seems he was a good person. Always interesting to hear him talk about various things. Wish he was with us all still.

The forgotten American values - honesty and craftsmanship. The last four years tells all you need to know about honesty... and craftsmanship? Considering we don't make anything in the United States anymore pretty much sums up craftsmanship. Everything Zappa was cynical about has become magnified... greedy sellouts and liars have become American idols. Frank Zappa and George Carlin were prophetic truth tellers who died before their entire stories could be told.

What a wonderful insight into a true American genius and the great love for his family. Thank you for this.

Was a really complicated music master. Very few to this day can even play some of his compositions accurately.

thanks for assembling this.. man i loved his music. my favourite memory and image was about a 30 or more minute improvisation with the band chugging away in the background, frank and his guitar on a stool center stage just playin'. way back in ottawa in the early 70's. He could talk and sing thru that thing.

Hello Ms. Butcher. Thank you for watching! I've read your book, and it's a thrill for me to know you seen the project. This film was compiled by me as a free personal project strictly for KZread using existing clips. My intention behind the project was to show a side of Zappa that, in my opinion, is overlooked. His fatherhood. As I watched interviews over the years, I enjoyed seeing him light-up a bit when mentioning his children. Along with the negative press going on with the family in-fighting at the time, I felt other fans would also enjoy a positive compilation of clips. I meant no disrespect by using your interview without contacting you. I felt it was perfect to introduce this project.

I was 14 years old when 'Freak Out' was released. Frank and his music has remained a major positive influence in my life since then. My eyes watered up at the do-whop song played at the end of this short documentary. 'Love is just chemicals' - Frank

I've been listening to Zappa since I found the Apostrophe album in my cousins collection at the age of 14 years. He was such an influence and still is to this day, such a powerful icon, I miss him greatly. Thank you for posting, excellent documentary. R.I.P. Frank

Saw frank twice in concert. He was a genius,and I hope his music lives on forever. Who cares about a name. . He is a part of my life,and one of the greatest guitar players ever, next to Jimi .
