I feel like if we saw more representation of other races as mermaids as children there wouldn’t be a big uproar about Halle berry being Ariel cuz the ocean is literally huge so there can mermaids in diffrent parts of the world like the carribean

Funny that you mention the Caribbean when black people are not native to the Caribbean and we're introduced to the area via slavery. But it's overall just ignorance of history and lack of knowledge of cultures that are not your own. All cultures that had contact w the ocean had tales of what we could interpret as mermaids sirens

i don’t think people cared too much about a black mermaid, they just didn’t see her as ariel since she does look very different from the original little mermaid. but i personally enjoyed her performance. but still, both sides have valid reasonings and concerns, most people liked it anyways.

In the African tradition Yemaya is represented as being a mermaid but she's a representation of being the Mother of the sea intbe patheon of the Orisha's. Since I'm a Pisces a have a special affinity to this aesthetic!

@@dionthetaurus yeah, the story is even crazier because it was just a horny dude wanting to watch girls washing themselves on the river, use a magic potion, the potion goes wrong and that's how we got a half human half reptile being. And I think in Cartagena or Santa Marta they probably have their version of a mermaid (I'm not in a costal city but it's near, Cartagena and Santa Marta are in fact a costal cities from Colombia, the Caribbean). Maybe also San Andres that it's an island and even have pirate legends so, who knows?

It would be interesting to see how a style would evolve over the year. Like how would people style mermaidcore in the fall or winter. I think it would open things up even more as people would have to get more experimental with how they portray the aesthetic. I wanna see more cottagecore and piratecore winter...and dark acadamia summers...it would be fun.

The fact that you caught yourself before you said African mermaid and switched to an African country instead😂🙏🏿. I really appreciate that. I agree, it would be fascinating to see mermaid interpretations from around the world instead of the usual European ones. It's something I'd like to see in the Academia aesthetics as well. Edit: Its not an style that I would fully commit to but I'd say I'm more of a sirenecore. Also someone said my face had I sirene essence, which I thought was cool. I'm cool with looking like a evil fish lady or all knowing bird lady. PPS: more fantasy aesthetics please 🙏🏿

Im loving this new trend as it shares similarities with other "darker" ones such as whimsigoth or fairy grunge. The use of layers and asymmetrical hems but in a pastel palette looks pretty cool. As for the lore, my culture views it kind of the european way. La Sirena/Tlanchana is not a good or bad being, but she does tempt and "doom" those who do not give an offering when traveling by water. In this sense, she is a goddess often seen as dangerous and even maternal.

Third, fantasy is, to me, what fashion should be about. Now the Hmm part...I don't get how mermaidcore is different from other beachy aesthetics. You open with a woman sitting on a rocky shore in a mermaid outfit. Where else could you wear that? To a party? What else can you do in that? Dance? I get that for us bipeds the aesthetic has to accommodate--e.g. long skirts, sandals. Then how is it different from other layered, gauzy beach aesthetics? THUMBS UP for the vid! The aesthetic video'd? Hmm...

As someone who was interested in this aesthetic for a while before it was mainstream, I found that there was more ethnic diversity in the aesthetic early on, actually quite a lot for what I expect from social media representation of aesthetics. But there was mostly a slim hourglass body type represented, it was much harder to find diversity of size. Now there’s more body types represented but it’s mostly white women and girls. Well that’s been my experience anyway. I’d love to see more cultures and ethnicities represented, it’s such a good aesthetic for sharing different stories and folklore!! It’s always nice to learn more about the world and other people’s perspectives Also I loved Halle as the little mermaid!!!! I loved the little mermaid growing up because of my red hair and I think she was perfect! She was so expressive and when she was on land she still moved like someone who was used to swimming around in the sea. Her acting and singing was amazing!! It makes me mad that people are so rude about her, especially when they justify it by saying redheads needed to “keep” Ariel for representation. Halle’s Ariel still has red hair!! The old movie still exists! That doesn’t make any sense, like I wish they’d stop making nonsensical excuses and just say they’re so emotionally stunted by racism that they don’t want to identify with black characters and go. Also while there’s recurring issues with how we’re represented, us white redheads are actually over-represented relative to our population (in general and in the disney princess lineup). But as well as red hair becoming more common among black people in places like the US due to interracial relationships, there are multiple other ethnicities where red hair exists naturally, such as in Polynesia and Algeria, that I’ve never seen represented. So Halle’s Ariel is great red hair representation not in spite of her blackness, but specifically because she is black!

Honestly, imo these asthetics actually look better on chubby girls. Don't know why exactly (although it's very in line with other aquatic mammals I guess) but I can't stop thinking of the most wonderfully rubenesque mermaid I saw at the Ren Faire. It just looked so much more natual on her and way less awkward and gangly than the skinny girls. 10/10. Chubby girls take this for your own!
