it's raining ducklings

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Mother duck decided to nest in a clematis in my front garden, with very successful results.
Unfortunately though, there's no water within easy walking distance, which seemed to confuse her (a little bit too late with 10 tiny pairs of webbed feet in tow).
As there are so many hungry cats in the area, we felt it'd be safer to box the ducklings up and carry them and mum down the road to a neighbours garden pond.
Just pleased we were around to make sure there was a happy ending.

We could learn a lesson from this momma. She manages to round up ten little duckings. Gets them to come when she calls ,looks after them all ,and gets them all to follow her wherever she goes. But I see moms at Walmart/ Target can’t seem to manage just one or two kids. Don’t know where they are, don’t know what they’re doing , can’t get them to follow, can’t get them to obey.

So many clueless comments on ducks here. Many ducks and particularly wood ducks like those in Eastern Australia nest in tree hollows and in pretty tall trees at that. These ducklings are designed to fall great distances to the ground without harm. Never interfere with animals and their young especially when they are doing fine. They don't need any help.

Wood Ducks nest up high, usually in trees above swampy or soft wetlands. And get this, the ducklings HAVE TO fall!! Lots of Louisiana folks tried to raise them with little success. Then some character at Univ Southern Louisiana observed closely, and tried tossing the ducklings off his roof into a sand pile. Voila!! Happy ducklings.

Since baby ducks/goslings are virtually weightless they do not exert force when falling. They just sort of bounce. Hence why they can fall like 100 feet and be fine. Force = mass*acceleration. So if mass is 0 force is 0

Ever heard of wood ducks? They lays their eggs high Up in trees near water, and then once their babies have dried after hatching, they jump out of the tree, which is always at least 20 feet up, land on the ground, and run to the water. Also there was this one nest of icelandic goslings which are very similar to ducks which was on top of a 400 foot cliff. They had to come to the ground to eat the moss they eat, and so they jumped off. Two of the three goslings survived the initial fall, they all hit several sharp rocks on the way down and two were completely fine, but the second one was snatched up by a Hawk before the parents could get to it, but the last one survived. They may be delicate to flesh wounds and broken bones from being crushed, but their skeleton is sturdy enough to let them survive long falls.

Some ducks fall 50 ft down onto soil and leaves when they leave their nest. And are completely fine, so these ducklings are still okay

Well, she isn't terribly stupid, after all, she did push each egg out of her backside by herself, then sat on them for several weeks, then watched whichever ones hatched, then pushed out the eggs that didn't hatch, then took care of them until She had to take them out of the nest to feed. It wasn't exactly sudden for her to have so Many ducklings, she has some Capacity to count, all animals Do.
