The iPad 10th generation is definitely something... today we'll examine it in depth to see if I was wrong. Is the iPad 10th gen actually a good machine or did Apple create a colossal nightmare of epic proportions with this hilariously lazy cop paste of an old iPad with some new colors and cheap components? I guess only time will tell. hehe

This would be somewhat tolerable if it was about $350. A $20 increase from the 9th generation iPad, at $450, that is way too much, plus they really should have given it the 2nd gen Apple Pencil 2 support and the quality screen since it is the new design.

That's why I bought myself, my wife, and my mother Nokia T20 Android tablets with Jelly comb universal bluetooth keyboards, a 256GB Micro SD card, and clear rubber bumper cases, as all 3 all in with are still cheaper than one base model iPad with the keyboard, plus a USB C to Micro USB adapter to charge the keyboards is like $2 if we don't want to carry an extra cable.

@@m-stat9 Sure if you buy lowend junk off someplace like Aliexpress, but so far Nokia is making solid tablets for the money with all day battery life, and constant software updates (I use my Nokia T20 tablet as my main portable device next to my phone, and do the majority of my work on it, and have not turned on my work PC in months other than to do system updates, and edit a couple of videos). Also their phones are on the Android One update program as I use a Nokia G50 as my daily phone just fine. Are they perfect, no, but neither is Apple, no company is. To be clear I'm no Android fanboy, and I don't hate Apple as I grew up in the 80's using an Apple IIe with dual disk drives (later briefly an Apple IIGS), on the same desk next to my Commodore 64 and 128, then in the late 90's/early 00's owned an iMac G3 Graphite, not counting all the Apple II, and Mac systems we used in school. My last Apple device was a used 13in Mid-2012 Macbook Pro(it's still going with upgrades now running Solus Linux passed down to one of my nieces who needed it more than me), it's just these days for my use cases, and this economy I can't justify Apple's prices when I have a family all needing devices, and Apple hardware limitations like no consumer friendly storage expansion like MicroSD cards, or the lack of a headphone jack(yes I do use wired earbuds, and headphones from my 30+ year collection from time to time when my bluetooth ones are charging, or I want higher sound quality out of say my Philips open backs with a Fiio A3 amp).

On the display, I heard it mentioned on another tech channel, possibly LTT, that it isn't laminated due to repair costs. The base model iPad is deployed in fleets like schools and corporations where having the glass cheaply replaced is a huge plus. A laminated screen repair might be $150 vs a non-laminated glass replacement can be done by the in-house IT for $30. It's a bummer for private consumers like us, but a plus for the big purchasers. Would be interesting to see the sales breakdown of the individual buyer vs the fleet purchaser.

@@vtvincent4893 the $120 price increase is offset by being able to re-use apple pencil 1's that schools and corporations bought in bulk years ago. the apple pencil 2 which is $129... the $9 adapter suddenly makes sense and is priced accordingly as well, and ends up being incredibly useful for those bulk buyers that can have the full new iPad experience with the pencil as part of their usual annual cycle of purchases with virtually no change in price, and no real need to fork over more cash for accessories (schools and corporations were never gonna go with the apple folio keyboard case, they would have sourced other cheaper keyboard cases, or skipped the keyboard all together and just gotten a protective case instead).

The deliberate lack of cross/backwards compatibility with accessories is a real disappointment, and would have done a lot to justify it IMO. And to add to the dogpile of sadness I've also seen reviews showing that the USB-C data transfer is nearer to USB 2.0 speeds so there goes a chunk of the appeal of USB-C. I took a gamble on grabbing a 9th gen in September at $270, hoping I wouldn't regret pulling the trigger just before a new model was announced.....and yeah, pretty safe to say I'm happy with the purchase. The price point hike alone is a bummer, but this update also does nothing to justify it beyond the nicer aesthetic.

All of the odd choices pretty much come down to Apple catering to the education market. There was an Apple event a few years back held at a college where they announced the 6th gen iPad which gives clear insight into where Apple is targeting this product to. Right now Google has a strangle hold on the education market with chromebooks and Apple can’t laminate the screen and ditch Apple Pencil 1 support because then they would be giving Google the market in a silver platter. The price is high but I bet in bulk Apple will make them reasonably enticing for school.

  • @techinrl9869

Totally agree. Just about every reviewer is reviewing this from the point of view of an iPad Pro user. Of course, this iPad is going to suck when you’re comparing it to its big brothers. The non-laminated display costs $15 to replace the glass. For education, that is a godsend since kids break the glass all the time. If it were laminated, it would cost $150 to replace. And none of the reviewers look at it from the point of view of someone who already has an Apple Pencil 1. Why complain about backwards compatibility with accessories for the high end iPads when none of the buyers of this product have any of those? The best way to compare this iPad is with a previous model base iPad such as the 7’th gen iPad. With a base iPad, nobody’s upgrading annually. People upgrade every 3-5 years. How does this iPad compare to a 6’th or 7’th gen? It looks pretty good by comparison, better in every way. I find it odd all the reviewers are complaining it’s worse than an iPad Air. Umm, it’s supposed to be. Otherwise, Apple should just label this the iPad Air 6 and sell it for $599. I’m extremely disappointed at every KZread reviewer since none of them have taken a practical point of view of a poor user upgrading from a prior base iPad or an education user.

The keyboard is $250 and it isn’t compatible with the old Smart Keyboard schools have tons of. They better give schools a 75% discount on that new keyboard or I question whether a device that has a keyboard with a list price comparable to a chrome book can compete with a chrome book. And given the $250 price, the school discount would have to be out of this world. Plus, the keyboard footprint is too long for some school desks.

Now its gonna be interesting what the next base iPad will look like, I'm hoping the gen 9 iPad will be gone but that may not mean the 329 dollars will move to this 10th or 11th gen iPad. worst comes to worst the 329 dollars may disappear and the starting price for an iPad could be 450 dollars lets hope this doesn't happen but its a possibility, after all we're talking about a capitalist American company where profits comes first, not much competition (competing themselves) so they don't have much to lose as result us consumers suffers most by getting great but a bad value products and what's worst we will buy it anyway.

The problem was what Apple learned about graphics at Blender. This threw a monkey wrench into the 3nm processor, so Apple stepped back and came up with the M2 half-step. Sure, it's not all that bad, but this year will be a bit, well, anemic. Here's hoping they can get their graphics squared away in the next year before the M3 faces the same disorder.

I think the new changes are nice to have (the new folio & the landscape camera), but they feel quite poorly implemented. It feels like apple know that these are features that people actually want, but they have to implement some hardware limitations (1st gen pencil support, the exclusive keyboard folio that doesn’t work with any other ipads) so that this “base” ipad doesn’t get too good to prevent people from getting the higher end ipads. It is just a very weird mix of good and bad things combining into a weird products that doesn’t really have a clear target demographic. It feels like a transitional phase product that has new features that will eventually be in the higher end models, and now they are just trying to squeeze more profits out of the (now 4 yo) ipad design which was first introduced in 2018. Unless you are someone that doesn’t want a laptop, doesn’t take digital notes or do any digital illustration, specially want an IPAD for doing basic internet work and media consumption. But in that case, older ipads (e.g. the 2018 ipad pro, ipad air 4) will be more value for money. They are still fully capable and fast, with full support of the latest ipad accessories ecosystem. This is a real one to skip. No one should really get one. Your conclusion is on point! Just a stepping stone for apple to upsale you to more expensive models!

  • @stever1514

The worst feature though is the price. People aren't noticing that Apple is establishing new higher entry points for all of their products, just like the M2 Macbook Air going up $200. The non-laminated is a necessity for the base model iPad, targeted towards education and enterprise where repairability matters more, repairing a non laminated display is much easier and cheaper. The Apple Pencil 1 is a stop gap measure for them to sell as many of them as they can before the end.

  • @skycubix8943

    @skycubix8943

A lot of people are misunderstanding this. Apple doesn't replace just the display during repair even for unlaminated iPads, they replace the whole device just like the laminated ones and charges you with the same absurd repair fee. For example, the screen repair fee for the iPad 9th gen, which is also unlaminated, costs over $200, over 60% the MSRP. Also, if Apple is targeting this towards education, *why are they removing the headphone jack??*

What makes me understand why this product exists: the education sector. This is a market that needs cheap, easily replaceable ipads in mass quantities. When you are ordering 10,000 units the $100 price difference suddenly becomes material. The use case is basic, so Apple can avoid parts in this constrained supply chain environment. This also makes Apple major gross margins too - so its win-win. Not a product for a tech enthusiast like you and me.

FYI - The previous 9th gen (entry-level) A13 iPad is still in the current iPad lineup as a new product. From $329. I’d rather have that one, and it’s Home Button with Touch ID makes it easier to use and grip securely (without accidentally touching screen) for kids with small hands. This new one is basically the old A14 (before M1) 10.9-inch iPad Air, with FaceTime camera moved and cheaper parts (like the screen), for $150 less at $449. I think that’s why it has an A14 instead of A15 (which iPhone SE and even the new $129 Apple TV has now).
