It's been 5 long years of suffering since the original retina MacBook introduced the butterfly keyboard, but the day has finally come when the butterfly is dead! After years of fury and very little key travel Apple listened and stepped its game up with the 16 inch MacBook Pro and 2020 MacBook Air with Magic Keyboard. The problem is we still have 5 years of butterfly keyboards still out there, so are any of them worth buying? Are there any butterfly keyboard MacBooks that are still good? In this video we'll go into the history of the butterfly keyboard as well as talk about which ones are safe to buy!

So I bought the 2019 13 inch 256 gig MacBook Pro in November, and the E and shift key we’re just not clicking. And I could feel the switch broken because it felt as if there was a crumb in it. Anyway, I took it to the Apple store in December and during that time they had a program or something so they gave me an entirely new MacBook and I was like okay thank you, then they were like “oh we’re not done yet, we still owe you 215 bucks” and so they gave that to me and it left me in shock and I bought me some new AirPods Pro’s lol.

Occasionally, some stuff gets under the keys and they don't click normally, but they get back to normal after some typical use. By far the best Mac I own. My brother on the other hand, went from a 12" MacBook, several keyboard replacements and full computer replacements to a 13" MacBook Pro in the process. It was a 2017 and had many issues and has lead Apple to give him a decently specced 2019 13" MacBook Pro which has been fine.

The keys that get stuck for me are the delete key, the power button, and "q." Whenever these keys get stuck I blow air on the area and then mash the key really hard over and over again until it's not stuck. In general I really don't hate this laptop at all, it's actually my favorite MacBook that Apple has come out with and I was so sad to see them discontinue it. At the hinge, it's only a hair thicker than my 2018 iPad Pro, and only weighs a little more. It was perfect for me as a daily driver because I have a huge gaming computer that I can't pack around. Also, the battery life on this thing even after 5 years is incredible.

Honestly, apart for barely chipped left corner of display casing, and small scratches on the bottom of laptop and charger, it's like new. It came with original packaging and with Limited Warranty until late October, 2019 (as i said, i bought it on late April, 2019, so it has already ended by now).

I have a 2017 13" MBP and although I always hated typing on it because I just don't like the butterfly keyboard because of the short travel, I never had any issues with it actually functioning. But I disliked typing on it so much that I haven't used it very much and all but gave up on using a personal computer. I just bought a 2021 16" M1 MBP and it is a dream to use compared to that and I am so glad the scissor mechanism has returned.

I just keep my 2011 13 inch macbook pro, it has a 1tb ssd, a new and good battery, 16gb of ram and i don't do anything demanding on that machine and it runs mojave (and is capable to run catalina as well thanks to dosdude) pretty well! So i do not need to upgrade any time soon, the dual core i5 in it is strong enough for day to day tasks, and that keyboard is wonderfull to type on, but if its time to buy a new one in the future, i will keep this awesome advice in mind! Thanks Luke!

No issues with the keyboard on my old 2015 MacBook, or any of the MBPs I have owned since then. Just lucky, I guess. I really like my 2019 13" MBP.

I'm late to the party but I had a 2018 MBA with the repeating key issue that of course became intolerable during the pandemic (which made repair quite difficult). I traded it in to Apple for $520 and purchased the M1 MBP base model. Worth it alone for the keyboard.

Awesome video, thank you, Luke! I had that patch-job silicone-skin covered butterfly keyboard MacBook Air 2019. I returned it after "typing" on it for 30 seconds! Like typing on a hardwood plank! That was January 2020. Today I received my refurbished M1 MacBook Air 2020 and it types like a dream! Better specs as well, obviously. P.S. You have really beautiful eyes! x

I am still trying to get my 2019 MBP keyboard properly fixed, but at this point I just want them to replace it with a 2020 because the last time it was in to get "repaired" they just took off the key caps and blew air under them to dislodge dirt. The fact that almost every key is fucking up is shite and needs to be fixed.

i'm one of the lucky people to still be having a 2016 macbook that never had anything stuck. i use a keyboard cover most of the time tho unless im writing a paper where i need those satisfying clicks. typing on my 2016 vs on my sister's air 2019 is a different experience. it actually clicks pretty well, just a shame that a lot of macs had dust stuck in them

It looks like I got lucky. I bought my Macbook Pro over 6 yrs ago before Apple switched to the Butterfly and it continues to work great. This is my first Macbook and I have never had a PC work so well this long. This wasn't a cheap laptop at all. I paid around $2000 for a CTO with 16GB RAM & i7 processor. I had to cheap out on the hard drive 256 and 13" screen. The 13" makes it extremely portable. Oh, I love the MagSafe connector. With two kids, it has saved my Mac on many occasions.

In fact I think the form factor of the 12' is the best in terms of the portability. It is thin and light. I hope they can publish sth like 12' or 11' MBA in the future.

I have the 2018 13' pro model and it is amazing, the processor, the graphics, and the keyboard. I have never had any problem with its keyboard till now and it's going to be 12 months now. It is the same as new. I love typing on this one as it gives ASMR (I can swear on that). People just need to take a bit of care of the gadgets that literally serve them. Even if you don't get enough time to clean your MacBook, you can still avoid dust or spilling over cheetos on the keyboard!!

There are so many revisions of the butterfly keyboard that it is difficult to talk about them (other than the discussion of reliability, which none of them were great with). I recently had the battery in my 2017 retina MacBook replaced, which generally also means they also replace the keyboard which they did (which was a good thing as the enter key was malfunctioning). My 2017 rMB originally had the second generation butterfly keyboard, which was different from the first generation on the premier (2015) retina MacBook, both of which were different in design from the various iterations used on the MacBook Pros. The keyboard that came back on my 2017 retina MacBook after service is vastly different than the keyboard it originally had...I assume this is the third generation design with the silicone layer as it is quieter and less mechanical-clicky-like. And this is of course going to be different from the third and fourth generation versions found on the 13/15 MacBook Pros...and the feel on the various MacBook versus MacBook Pro butterfly keyboards is also different. Overall, it's a hot mess, as none of them achieved the reliability of the original design they replaced. The bottom line is that these units are not very easy to service, but the butterfly keyboard mechanism is not reliable. I bought my retina MacBook expecting to have to eventually replace the keyboard, and luckily this replacement was covered by Apple. I've been delighted with this MacBook and love the form factor, but the keyboard is its weakness and something all buyers should be aware of. If you buy any Apple portable with the butterfly mechanism, assume you will eventually have to shell out the $200-250 bucks to replace it (in which case you get a new battery). If you are debating the current MBP/MBA with the scissor mechanism versus a refurb Apple portable with the butterfly mechanism, I suggest spending a little more now to get the current version with the scissor mechanism, because whatever you save otherwise will eventually be offset when you have to replace the butterfly keyboard on the older model, and this way you avoid the hassle. The butterfly keyboard mechanism will go down as one of the greatest self-inflicted failures by such a powerful company, and an example of how a wildly successful and capable company was unable to anticipate high failure rates, and was unable to fix the core problem despite multiple attempts. It's Apple's New Coke.

Support site says "we are actively repairing your computer". Tried calling...you get the At home advisors that can't help with the retail store. Tried their Twitter support. This video is so spot on Luke especially regarding avoiding ALL 12 inch models, couldn’t agree more - as a reseller I got a great deal on a 2016 m7 500GB MacBook which looked near brand new - paid just £270 without a charger. I wanted to like it, i really did, but I just couldn’t. Hated the keyboard from the off and hilariously underpowered + the constant worry that it would cook itself to death or have a failed USB-C ruined it for me sold on a week later. It’s amazing how many immaculate but stone dead 12 inch MacBooks are out there already.
