    Justin, my family and I are small farmers here in eastern Ontario Canada, last spring when we filled our diesel tank for crops, the bill was $3400. Now this spring it was just shy of $10,000. At $9775. Back in 2008 we were a very large farm for our area having over 3000 acres of tillable land, that fall at harvest the diesel fuel cost for that 3000 acres was $63,000. Since then over the course of almost 15 years, the instability of the markets, obvious fuel costs, more and more government regulations and penalties in all aspects of agriculture, we made some serious changes that some were our own choices and others were forced by certain factors, we deceased down to just shy of200 acres now which is the originalhomesteadwhich is coming up to its century status... my whole point to this comment is this, if people think that this situation is going to get better in a few months think again hard! At any time we can end up seeing major and I mean major food products not on the shelves nor returning to them for quite some time due to all of this. I pray that each person here has a strong community that they can help one another to minimize the pinch we are all going to feel in the coming months and possibly years... my strong advice is support that small local farmer before he's gone and then so will his ability to help feed you and your area during these days ahead.

    We don’t eat our chickens, but we do use them in many ways. Some free range (older birds) to keep pests out of the gardens, property that we use for walking and they lay eggs in the barn. The static coup has 20 chickens with a 35 foot run making eggs, compost and keeping pests away from the barn. It costs $25 to feed them a month, but since we love eggs it feeds us very well (as well as anyone who comes for a visit). Only a 2 acre property, but chickens eat and drink out of old Waldorf roasting pans that we wash out every morning. Super easy!

    Good video Justin. I do have to disagree with you on one thing. Don't wait till spring on layers. If people want eggs as soon as possible, they should order them this fall, when spring comes they will be laying. I stopped raising spring chicks a few years ago when I had a bantam hen hatch out full size chicks in October. They laid in spring when the rest of the flock started picking back up from the winter lull. Since then I have loved having all my egg layers ready to go in spring. We get cold snowy winters, but as long as I start them in October they need minimal support till they are feathered out and join the flock. I may move this years replacements up to Aug/Sept with my meat bird order and then simplify the raising process. I hate waiting till midsummer for spring layers and will never go back :)

    I have a shipment of chicks on the way and was asked, by the hatchery, if I'd consider another order for October. It's a safe time of year for us, Texas Gulf Coast, so ... if I can free up the money I see nothing wrong with another order. Plus, maybe a mixed bag of cheap cheepers? We'll have an idea of which birds we're keeping and which we're culling. Long term plans are getting going. We're starting to look at next year and buying an incubator for more than our broodies might hatch. I'd rather keep birds "on the hoof" and alive, than have to worry about electricity outages with a freezer. You'd be amazed at how long that chicken will stay fresh if you leave it to graze.!

    As a small kid I had bad knee pain at night, mother would apply hot towels which did nothing. The family raised chickens and my pillow and mattress were stuffed with chicken feathers. The last three years my knee ached all the time, after \X-rays the medical conclusion was arthritis. My doctor could give me shots of what-ever in each knee every few months, I said. NO. After gaining some interest in farming from a famous YoutTube channel I ordered a book authored by Joel Salatin titled “Pastured Poultry Profit$.” On page 149 Joe describes curled toe disease. He fed his chickens cow’s liver. I searched several stores a finally found it packaged-sliced and frozen. Two hours after eating cooked cows liver my knee pain disappeared.

I've seen you supplement their normal feed with leftover scraps and things but is it possible to do this completely from your garden? It seems like that would be a lot more sustainable and self reliant than relying on things like tractor supply for feed. Also, If you were to grow your own chicken feed, would you focus on growing leafy greens, sprouted foods, or a combination maybe?? Anyways, I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

When you live in an arid climate, with no rainfall from April to November, and consequently no pasture, cows are just too expensive to feed. Also, they are only slightly easier to fence (my Jersey would push down or go over her fence if she felt like it), and i have never been kicked by a goat at milking time, but I have had cow hoof print bruises on my ribs a number of times. Just because you don't like the way their eyes look, don't knock goats.

    I have been trying to figure out how to get chickens on my family property for FOUR YEARS. There are about 8 people living on this property, not quite or around about an acre. Our family typically will buy a case of eggs a couple times per month (60 eggs). During covid the price of them at our Walmart went from $3.-4. and some change. Now they are about $11.49 per case. And I had resolved to make sure to get chickens here THIS SUMMER. I started collecting some free wood, my husband and I have started building a chick brooder. And I have my eyes on something to use for a chicken coop and run and just have to buy them.

    I brood my chicks in a plastic tote. Until they feather out, they don't need a lot of space. It works pretty well. You can do this!

    @Chickens and Gardening Finances has been one hurdle. Finding an agreeable place to put then, because space is limited has been another. There are 3 living structures on our small property and horse pastures on both sides of us. So even places to safely plant food has to be very strategic. Some of my family has t wanted chickens because of our prior experience raising them when we were kids. And also, I need A LOT OF INFRASTRUCTURE, that I don't have. I've never wanted to just buy chickens without first having a safe place for their feed, a strong and predator proof chicken coop and run, and all the supplies I would need to raise them with. I had to collect over time some free wood worth using. We are in the middle of building our brooder right now. Gonna be getting the supplies and feed soon and ordering the chicks. And using the time they're in tge brooder to get the coop built and in place. I'm really feeling the pinch!

    @Chickens and Gardening Well I did see a ring video showing a bear trying to chew its way into a backyard coop. And it made me a little nervous because I know we have NUMEROUS predators in our area. My next door neighbor has already caught bear on their game cameras regularly. Plus I know that we have raccoons, and possums, and skunks, and hawks, and I have a herd of cats just on my property alone, LOL! So I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to get away with using materials that are not strong. Chicken co-op wire, hardware cloth, wire apron all the way around on the ground. Lots of work!

    It's not too late for chicks, but people need to move quickly. I work at two Tractor Supply Company stores and the chicks, ducklings and guineas are literally flying out of the stores still - and have been all season. But yes, now is the time to raise poultry if you can. I also strongly believe in fall pullets, that way they reach point-of-lay in spring, when you most want the eggs, rather than in the middle of summer (or later) with a short laying season.

    I don't think there is really an average... It can even vary widely by state... Up until recently we could pay anywhere between 2.50 to 5 per bird over the last five years... Within the last couple though regulation costs have forced most of the processors out of business and now we can't find anyone for under 5 per bird

    @Chickens and Gardening I refuse to do Cornish Crosses for just that reason. I was given two chicks that had outgrown being cute. One had a heart attack and one reached a point where she couldn't walk. Slaughter is a mercy for them. The slower growing hybrids are what I go for, if I can't find anything more sustainable.

  • @goldengryphon

    @goldengryphon

    @Chickens and Gardening Golden Comets from Murray McMurray. I picked up 5 hybrids from TSC last year - not my plan, but it's what was available during the time. One pullet made it through (I had some medical stuff going on and, while my SO kept the birds alive and going, he wasn't overly concerned about their health or safety considering he was working and doing everything else, too). That one hen set a secret nest and hatched out 5 chicks, one of whom is still with us. I like the Golden Comets, Red Rangers, Buff whatsits and Black somethings better than the CCs. They take longer, eat more because of that, and don't have the same meat to bone ratio. They are perfectly fine if you don't slaughter at a particular point, don't have heart attacks, slipped tendons, tendencies to fatty tumors, and are perfectly fine to be standard flock chickens. Well, you never know what you'll get if they decide to go broody or try to hatch anything they lay, but are otherwise great birds.

    They are a cross bred chicken that grows at a very fast pace...if grown out pass 16 wks they will die of heart failure....they can't live long enough to have breeders...and they can eat almost twice as much as a reg chicken in that short time...most folks I know soak their feed to swell it ...
