To wash the watcher, er, watch the washer do its thing, there's probably a little doohickey on the underside of the lid that fits inside a recessed hole in the ledge that the lid rests on when it's closed. Unless they've bulletproofed it, you probably can use a finger or a pen to hold down the tab or button inside the hole and fool the sensor into thinking the lid is shut. You didn't hear this from me, of course.
