    Dessouky has always had the talent to get to the top but hasn't reached his full potential because of his mental and emotional fragility. He finally overcame that at this event. Beating Gawad, Elias, Momen, and Farag in a row, all top 10 guys, was an absolutely phenomenal achievement and I hope he can keep this going. One of the most exciting and skillful players I've ever seen.

    Feel for Elias, he did some amazing retrieving on the last rally and then lost to a very dodgy stroke

    Yes, it should've been a let. Dessouky was the deserving winner overall though, in this match, I think. His squash was magnificent throughout the tournament.

    For the most part I must commend both the referee and the video reviewing, most of the decisions were spot on but that call on game ball was shocking. The ball was so far past Dessouky he could only play it straight and that channel was totally cleared by Elias. Still, banger game! Amazing pace and retrievals

    8:10 was imo clear from the ball. He jumped and elias came from the back. How can he see where elias is? Elias should’ve gone from his back and not go around him. Please correct me if I’m wrong

    I agree I thought it should have been a let, because Dessouky couldn't have known that Elias wasn't going to go around to his left.

  • @splat4097

    Dessouki stops and asks the referree to make a decision. Dessouki is saying he did not have access to the front wall i.e. if he had hit it, Elias was in the way. If the referee agrees then it is a stroke - point to Dessouki. If the referee thinks it is borderline i.e. that Elias was slightly in the way, the ball could probably have been played but Dessouki wasn't sure and stopped for safety reasons, then a let is awarded - replay the point. The commentators are saying that if Dessouki had moved quicker to the ball and then asked, it would have been a stroke. But because he waited until the ball was slightly past him it should only be a let. He waited so long, even a no let - point to Elias - was a possibility. As with a lot of squash decisions, the interpretations and nuances of the rules are many and the lack of consistency frustrating for players. It is part of the game that you must learn to accept, although in the heat of battle few of us manage it!

    Great game. Strange stroke decision to me at 7-7, though. Elias lifts his racket up only when the ball is already past him, he would still have to move to the ball before being able to hit it properly. More or less the same at 11-12.

  • @ewallt

    @ewallt

    7-7 stroke looked right to me. I don’t think Desouki did anything intentionally wrong, and his movement would have been correct had has ball been deeper, but it looks like it didn’t go as deep as intended, and he wound up moving right into Elias’ line to the ball. The key is how deep the ball was. Just a little deeper, and it’s just a let, and deeper yet and it’s a no let, because Elias could have gone around the other way.

  • @ewallt

    @ewallt

    3 жыл бұрын

    11-12 was different, because the ball was deep. I understand the reason for the let decision, although it looked to me to generous for Desouki who had gone the wrong way. I believe the video referee gave a let because the ball came well off the back wall, so in the final position Elias was in Desouki’s way, but it was a bit generous because Desouki made no effort to get to the ball. I don’t think the let was given because of the original interference, and had the length been better, the no let decision would have been upheld.

    Both calls at the end of the game were bad for Elias, but the let call was particularly egregious. If that’s a let, you could get a let anytime you wanted by standing to the side of your opponent and yelling “let!” on literally any shot.

    The referee basically lost control of the match. The player's lost confidence in the calls and had no idea how appeals were going to be called, started milking stroke opportunities from the scrappy fast paced play.

    just goes to show how subjective decisions can be. The commentators are former pros and know the game in and out, and if they can't come to the same conclusion as the video referee, it shows a flaw in the game
