'It’s Bisan From Gaza, And This Is A Second Nakba'
For Palestinians, May 15 marks the anniversary of the “Nakba” - Arabic for “catastrophe” - when hundreds of thousands were forced from their homes. Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7 has been called the “second Nakba” by many Palestinians forced to flee their homes.
Bisan Owda spoke with three survivors from the first Nakba who shared firsthand accounts of their struggles in 1948 and today. They spoke about their life before the establishment of Israel and how they’ve now been displaced twice in their lifetimes.
Around 15,000 Palestinians were killed after the Nakba in 1948. And since October 7, Israel has killed over 35,000 Palestinians in Gaza, and 1.7 million people have been displaced - more than double the number of Palestinians displaced in 1948.

I'm 17, living in the UK. I never really knew much about Palestine growing up, I knew my grandma was pro-Israel so that's the only side I ever really got. And she explained it in a completely incorrect way, that the land was unoccupied before Israel and that "pro-Palestine" people were terrorists who just wanted to spread their land out, so that's the only perspective ever got. My father is Irish, and a couple of years ago he was teaching me and my sister about Irish history, and mentioned Irish solidarity with Palestine in passing. Around that time my family went to Belfast, it was during Marching Season which is (simplified) when those in Northern Ireland who consider themselves British celebrate, but it can be quite intimidating and even threatening towards Irish people like my dad. A lot of the people who were treating my dad badly had pro-Israel posters and Israeli flags etc, and I started to feel maybe my grandma had been wrong. Then October 7th happened and about a week later I asked my parents to explain the situation between Palestine and Israel to me. I didn't know which news sources to trust but I trusted my parents. Initially I was told it was a sensitive subject and it was complicated and I was just warned not to go around talking about it, but eventually I got my dad to explain it to me. He explained why people hold both opinions but was clearly pro-Palestine, but still advised me it wasn't something you should really talk to people about. But when videos of what's happening in Gaza started coming up on my feed I started to want to talk about it. I post everyday about it on social media, rarely go out without a keffiyeh or a badge, go marches in London, and I've boycotted brands connected to Israel and donated £200 to Save The Children's Gaza fund (I know that's not that much in the scheme of things, my parents banned me from donating more because they said I need some money of my own for emergencies) I find it so strange that a few years ago if someone had asked me my opinions on Israel's actions I wouldn't feel particularly strongly about it but if I'd had to have picked I would have told people I was on Israel's side because I'd never even been taught there was another side. I spoke to a friend of mine a few weeks ago who'd never even heard of Palestine. She's spent twelve years in education, has qualifications, and is on social media, and she didn't know Palestine even existed, let alone what was happening there. No one is willing to talk about it in the UK. It benefits politicians pockets if this genocide continues, so the media is painting pro-Palestine protesters as anti-Semitic terrorists. Which is ridiculous because one of the only other pro-Palestine teenagers I know is Jewish

This is a wonderful video, though very sad. These stories of the original Nakba need to be documented and remembered. This past Saturday in Seattle (May 11), we held a rally in honor of both Gaza and the death anniversary of Shireen Abu Akleh; and an elderly Christian Palestinian (aged about 90) told the story of how she grew up in Jerusalem, and witnessed the bombing of the King David Hotel in 1946. Her family decided to spend some time in Egypt, since things were getting rather crazy in Jerusalem; but then, they weren't allowed to return home in 1948. More such stories need to be told, while the survivors are still alive...
God bless you Bisan. I cry every time I hear you are alive. Your parents must be so proud of you. I know I am. ❤
