    The F-15 Eagle was designed to go toe to toe with an aircraft that severally overstated it's abilities. AKA the MIG-25 Foxbat. The Russian's had basically puffed out their chest and talked a lot of shit and everyone took them seriously.

  • @44excalibur

    @44excalibur

    @@ericrickson Yes, I'm aware of the story of the MiG-25 Foxbat and the big scare it put into the US military at the time. The F-15 Eagle was indeed created to counter the Foxbat, and it was indeed superior to the Foxbat as the MiG-25 was designed to be a high altitude, supersonic interceptor to take out enemy bombers, and not an air superiority fighter, which shocked many in the west who seriously overestimated the MiG-25's capabilities. But the F-15 and F-14 also served as a necessary replacement for the F-4 Phantom, as the Vietnam War showed how inadequate the Phantom was for the realities of modern combat, despite its speed and power, and that having two separate fighters for the Navy and Air Force designed for their unique requirements was better than the one-size-fits-all approach with the F-4.

    True. It was an ancient plane by the time it was retired and it was absolutely cutting edge when it was built. To this day, I pissed that they chose the FA-18 over the modernized F-14. It would have kept everything great about the F-14, fixed the bulk of it's issues and added nearly everything good about the Superhornet. That plane would still likely be the best 4th gen fighter ever built had it seen production. Plus, the F-14 just looked cool. The camera loved it. @@AM93000 how exactly is that beneficial? If why had the Super Tomcat 21 that would be an aircraft worth keeping in service since its greater payload makes it better for carrying large amounts of standoff weapons. Stealth Aircraft are dominating the skys these days but their one great weakness is limited payload due to carrying all ordinance internally. 4th Gen fighters don't have that issue and are being envisioned as missile trucks to back up stealth fighters. Not only would the Super Tom Cat 21 been better as a missile truck, but it could be used to carry hypersonic missiles, and due to its "tunnel" effect could perform supersonic maneuvers while carrying them to launch points.

    I know the idea of Rooster and Mav making their way to an abandoned F-14 and flying it out of the hot zone (dare I say...danger zone?) is kind of unrealistic. But, I loved every _second_ of it. The movie was so damn good that by this point the writers were playing with house money. They could have escaped in a flying saucer and I'd have cheered.

    A nearly clean F-14 like in the movie had a greater than 1:1 thrust to weight ratio, if memory serves, it means that once in the air, it (along with the F-15, 16, and 18) could accelerate while standing on its tail and go supersonic.

    This is great filmmaking for many, many reasons. But one thing stood out to me. Throughout the whole scene we are fed information about the F14 in an organic way using quick shots, and focus. We are shown that the F14 has two A/A missiles, we are shown the throttle and the rudder pedals action shots that will later be shown during the "splitting the throttles" snap roll, and we are shown how the mechanism for wing movement is operated, again something that will be used in the "overshoot" at the end of the air battle. This is proper filmmaking with the "show, don't tell" approach, and it's ridiculous that such basic rules of cinema are completely ignored today. In this scene, they are teaching in a few seconds all we need to know about the F14 to enjoy what's coming next.

Lol, then my folks informed us that we were getting the player as well so it will always be a memorable one for sure!! Still need to watch the new one.

    Top Gun on VHS was like $40. In 80's money? That's $108 today! Needless to say, I never got the tape, lol. I actually only saw bits of the film, here and there, till oddly enough I felt like I finally wanted to see it, then the new film was announced. One of those cool things that happens, on occasion. The OG movie is pure 80's awesomeness and the new film is a great, if overly delayed follow up. Better late, than never.
