But or Rent - Robin Hood 1973 - • Robin Hood
An amiable rooster called Alan-a-Dale (Roger Miller) tells stories and sings songs of the heroic Robin Hood (Brian Bedford) and his trusty sidekick, Little John (Phil Harris), in this animated animal-themed adaptation of the legendary story. When evil Prince John (Peter Ustinov) deputizes the Sheriff of Nottingham (Pat Buttram) to collect unreasonable taxes from the animals of Sherwood Forest, Robin, Little John and the other merry men wage a lighthearted battle against their evil foes.

It's actually surprising how much history is caked into this movie. King Richard being sent off on "that crazy Crusade" references the historical Holy Crusades to Jerusalem of the middle ages, Prince John's crying for his mother is a reference to Eleanor of Aquitaine - who was queen of both France and England at different times and who famously did favor King Richard over King John, etc.

which funnily made _Richard_ the not-so-great King. His mother didn't only favour him, she pretty much let him do whatever and he didn't really care about england and preferred being somewhere else, be it france, Jerusalem or anywhere else he could find that _wasn't_ the country he was actually responsible for, which actually left her in charge for quite some time

Could it be argued that all the taxes were being levied so heavily in part because King Richard was basically bankrupting the country with his crusade? Honest question, I haven't studied this

@@saiyasha848 If I got it right, Aquitane in France was more worth tan England at the time. I did a little look into that history and found that if they put a bit of real history into the Robin Hood myth, we could have some really interesting stories. Like Eleanor secretly supporting Robin Hood to keep John busy in Nottingham, which he controlled. As far as I could see that was also the reason why there wasn't a sheriff in Nottingham, because that was a post only being given by the king. There are so many possibilities that would be much more interesting than the 're-imaginations' we had in recent decades.

Robin Hood's disguise during the archery tournament was the best. The problem that helped PJ figure it out is only Robin would have that kind of skill, and the chosen prize was obvious motivation. Combine Robin Hood's most famous skill and well known past with Maid Marian, this was a very dangerous trap that unfortunately, Robin Hood's pride and heart couldn't resist

For those that don’t know or remember, the song that plays at the start of Robin Hood, “Whistle Stop” is actually what gave birth to the “Hamster Dance” song. Listen to the lyrics carefully and you’ll hear the similarities.

Bit of interesting historical context: in real life, king Richard was not interested at all in ruling/maintaining England, and went on the crusades out of his own volition. The royal family ruled over the Angevin empire which was fundamentally French (Norman) in origin, in fact they only spoke French (the rulers of England only started to speak English MUCH later). On his return from the failed crusade he got captured and his ransom bankrupted England which contributed greatly to king John's tax policies, and then he died after willingly naming John as successor. King John then inherited an absurdly unstable kingdom that was in constant fighting with France and the Pope, and in his attempts to try and salvage the situation he lost pretty much all of the territories outside England and pissed off everyone around him. It got so bad that when he died, all the revolts against him finally stopped and thus the last thing everyone would remember of him was that only in death he fixed anything, and so he became the caricature of a terrible tyrant that stole the crown from his brother (which is funny, considering Richard alongside his other brothers tried to usurp their own father and mother multiple times.) That's not to say John was an angel, he did conspire to keep Richard away and not pay his ransom, and made some very poor decisions that precipitated his failures - just, his reputation is way overblown due to myth and Robin Hood folklore. Richard in real life was objectively a much, MUCH worse king.

Historically, Richard only spent about 10 months of his entire reign in England. The rest of the time he was either in France or off on Crusade. And Prince John, later King John, was so bad that he's the reason they formed a constitutional monarchy with the Magna Carta.

It is also considered one of the greatest adventure films ever made. Filmed in glorious Technicolor, it won 3 academy awards for best art direction, film editing, and original score. Your perspective is so thoughtful, fun and so easily able to get above and beyond the petty, overly fearful historical hangups of the current age when witnessing art and beauty in movies/storytelling from an earlier time. You're a smart movie conversant man. Will keep watching. Saw your review of this, The Little Mermaid, Snow White, Pinocchio, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty... and also saw you get quite cut up during Tangled with Rapunzel... all so good 🙂 . Great movie reaction commentary... ... beautiful stories... ...Will stay tuned...

Robin Hood is one of the first things adapted into every new form of entertainment in the western world that comes out. It was folk tales, novels, plays, movies, tv shows, games. I feel like i really need to mention this. The reason snakes like Kaa and Hiss can hypnotize is because back in the day they believes snakes could put their prey in a trance by looking at them. Especially cobras. It's just one of those beliefs, but funny enough Cuttlefish can do that and they make their whole body look like these cartoon eyes.

Hard to choose my favorite Disney classic; they're all outstanding, in their own way. 'Dumbo' has all the heart, 'Jungle Book' has got got the best music, 'Robin Hood'... Well, 'Robin Hood' has Robin Hood: my very first cartoon crush. Phil Harris, who was a well-known singer and entertainer, lends his inimitable voice to Little John. Harris also voiced Baloo the bear in 'Jungle Book.' A talented man who is inextricably linked with Disney bear characters, healso has a musical catalog that is certainly worth checking out. The rooster Alan A'dale is voiced by country singer/songwriter Roger Miller. Miller composed the songs for this film, including the sad and beautiful 'Not in Nottingham.'

The Adventures Of Robin Hood from 1938 is still the best version to me. 2bd is this version then Robin Hood: Men In Tights is an excellent parody of all of the previous Robin Hood movies but especially Prince Of Thieves with Kevin Costner.

Actually, those weren't karate chops that Lady Cluck dealed out but just smacking the guards down to the ground, as karate hadn't become a thing in the US yet. The closest that the US got to Asian martial arts at the time was Hanna Barbera's Hong Kong Phooey released the next year and The Muppet Show were first broadcast in 76, that's when Miss Piggy started to appear and doing her karate chops, making karate more mainstream in the US and Europe. The whole bit with Lady Cluck attacking the royal guards is more inspired by American Football (or rugby as it's known outside of the US).

If you are going to watch Men in Tights (which you definitely should) then you should watch Prince of Thieves 1st because it is a direct parody of that movie and many of the jokes are in reference to it. Also, Alan Rickman is phenomenal in Prince of Thieves, he alone makes it a worthwhile watch.

I don't know about Men In Tights, but you should definitely watch Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves from the 90s. Kevin Costner, Alan Rickman, Morgan Freeman - you guys'd love it. And the Errol Flynn version from the 40s is fun too. The rest of the versions, like with Russell Crowe,, aren't worth it imo.

Watch 'Prince of Thieves' before you watch 'Men in Tights'. While the latter makes fun with Robin Hood in general, some jokes are a reference to 'Prince'. As for this movie? A lot could not animated on the budget they had and there are is no 'real' story of Robin Hood. There are a lot of legends and some even contradict each other. And some even get some of the actual history wrong. The taxes were high because King Richard needed money for his Crusade and his brother Prince John got the blame for it, though it didn't help that he tried to steal the crown while Richard was away and kept the taxes high because he needed money for his bid for the crown. Richard forgave John and John became the actual king after Richard's death. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Great action scenes and some Dark Age mysticism as well. Just a suggestion if you like the Sword & Sorcery films. And the music score is hauntingly amazing.
