Karuta is the representation of traditional card game in Japan.
The origin is considered to be a seashell matching game played about 1000 years ago.
At first, they were using only seashells.
Although from about 500 years ago, which is the period of the warring states, they have started writing poems and drew pictures, and added up to the original game.
This has led to the present style of Karuta.
Now that it’s a new year’s fun, it’s history is long since people got familiar to it.
To begin with,Karuta is played with 100 cards with poems written.
First, you would have to choose 50 out of them, and separate it into 25 each, among two players.
Next, as the poems starts being read, you need to get the card before the other.
Leave the card out of the field if you get one. The one who gets rid of their own pile wins.
However, these two are prohibited.
①Touching the card with both hands.
②Starts moving one’s hand before the poems being read.
Karuta is not only easy to play indoor, but also reachable source to learn old Japanese culture and history.
