Until the international situation changes he is winning. Ukraine has lost but so has Russia even most of its allies are not recognizing the border changes yet. They are largely considering this as a Ukrainian civil war and once over the borders go back to square one.

Just bear in mind some forces can be in an area especially if they were in a hidden location. While large formations it may be more difficult to be supported without prior caches being established, conventional force structures is what you are getting at as guerilla forces often stay in leave behind or behind enemy line operations. So saying no forces is a little much especially since the CIA trained ukrainian stay behind agents so saying none is a bit much, saying no conventional units is another. It is "unlikely' that there would be underground networks to house trojan horse units.

You're missing the point of Russia's tactics. It's demilitarisation first and foremost. Remember, if Ukraine had ratified the Minsk 1 and 2 agreements or the Istanbul agreement, then Ukraine would be intact. Taking territory is secondary to attrition and would force a sane opponent to the negotiating table

@@DontWorryBeHappy75 Russia signed Russian-Ukrainian Friendship Treaty 1997, and before that Russia signed 1994 The Budapest Memorandum where they guarantee to Refrain from the threat or the use of force against Ukraine. Starting in 2010, Ukraine adopted a non-aligned status that was codified into law, meaning it could not join military alliances. This law was still in force 2014 during Russia's first invasion in 2014, and as we know, Ukraine is still not even close to be a Nato member. So, what if Russia just would honour international law and contracts?

But in that sense You a right, a agreement with Russia is not worth anything, as they take the liberty to breach such when ever it suits their narrative. The fact remains, Ukraine Is not a NATO member, and will not be any time soon, still russia started this expansion project already 10 years ago. Russia has never been worried about NATO expansion( we can see that on their reaction to Sweden and Finland joining), the only reason they were worried about Ukraine joining was because after that, the dream of creating Novorossiya would be impossible to utilize.
