A few days I commented that it seems this town has been lost. Even if there is no further significant damage to the town I don't think it's feasible to continue to live there in the way people have, because this could continue indefinitely. It's clearly an extremely active area, and the risks are just too high. My thoughts are with the citizens displaced, and the loved ones of the gentleman who remains missing.

There’s another KZread video that shows an overhead shot of the town in the 50s vs now. It was a lot smaller and only on one side of the fault line. You could clearly see the fault. They filled it in and built right over top of it. Really poor building decision.

This whole Reykjanes peninnsula is in possible danger from Volcanic eruptions. In 1973 or 1974 a the whole town of Vestmaneyjar went under lava and ashes for over a year and the town was evacuated. Then people moved back and have lived there ever since. The Grinvikingar will move back to their town at some point. Volcanic eruptions in Iceland are a constant inconvenience, but we live with it, we are used to it and deal with it in a stoic manner.

You can build all the walls you want to divert the flow of magma however, it also can travel underground in Lava Shoots. In other words, the best protection is to get out of it's way.

So far it looks like it could have been so much worse though. - There was so much warning time. Everyone evacuated, late but they did it. - No submarine eruption near the town. - Larger first eruption occurred to the the north. No damage to infrastructure. - Second eruption stopped quickly. Grindavik was never a good location to build a town, but of course that was not known to the people of the time. But everyone got out in time. Only one fatality so far. Life can be rough, but it goes on. All the best to the people who are affected!

Even without lava flowing down the streets, the deformation of the crust has destroyed structures, and infrastructure. This active period will end in time, however, it may recur first a century or more. Life is change on a dynamic planet. Holding on to that which is gone is unhealthy in the long term. There comes a time to decide to recover everything that can be recovered or salvaged, to learn, and to move on. If I lived there, which I don't, I would never consider returning. It is too unstable, and too dangerous. Viewed differently, no insurer will cover properties there.
