Back in grade school in grade 8 so about 12-13yo, using the boys shotput balls which were like 10lbs so much lighter then the professional balls he used, I was able to get around 17 meters on it. The 33 of us in that class were getting between 7-20m shotputs, where the girls were using a 6lb ball were getting at most 14m and the boys were getting on the farther end. So when I was watching this vid after never thinking about shotput since grade 8, about 8 years ago, I wasn’t so much impressed but thinking instead, “not bad not bad”. I was honestly expecting the best shotput ever to be like 100 feet.

I think its very possible Kovacs beats Ryans record before retiring, but Crouser's 3 years younger than him and his consistency over 22 is unrivaled. Kovacs has 60 throws over 22, Crouser has over 150, and out of the 12 throws over 23m he has 7 of them. Even if Kovacs beats that world record I think Crouser take it back before he retires.

They should become good friends and push each other to the highest heights. On another note I remember American Olympic shot putter Brian Oldfield in the Superstars competition. His explosive power and speed amazed me. I think he won the 100 meters, beating professional football players, and of course he dominated the weight events. Watching these guys it is frightening seeing giant men be explosive, quick and powerful. I used to sometimes run the final leg in the 4x400 relay in high school. I could run low to mid 50s back then. I remember one indoor race where a shot putter from the other team was behind when he got the baton and he was gaining on me for 250 meters until he gassed out! These big guys are scary athletic sometimes.

I know this is a heavier shot, and we are talking about world records, but there is one level where neither of these guys came even close. The legend at the level I am talking about graduated from high school the same year I did, and in his last high school meet, did something, absolutely insane. I am talking about Michael Carter. I believe that the only reason he didn’t win a World Championship or a Gold Medal in the shot is that he was an all-american college football player, an all-pro football player and a Super Bowl champion as a nose guard for SMU and a defensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers. I know these two are phenomenal shot putters and, this video and most of the comments will give them plenty of praise, but I want to highlight one of the most incredible performances and unbeatable records I have ever seen. Let’s look at the details. Back in the spring of 1979, Michael was a really good high school shot putter, but he wanted to be great. That winter, he had worked on his form until it was nearly perfect and it started paying dividends. Not only did he become the greatest high school shot putter ever in his home area of Dallas and his home state of Texas, he became the national record holder by the end of the season. He had raised the record from 72 feet, to over 76 feet. But he had one big meet left, the Golden West Meet in the middle of June. Well, Michael, in a few months time, had already raised the national record nearly four feet, an absurd amount in this event. But, at the meet in question, Michael did something, as far as percentage improvement goes, that only Bob Beamon ever beat. At that meet, Michael had a put of over 81 feet. That was done in June of 1979. I’m not sure of the exact day, but Michael turns 62 sometime this month. He has held the National High School Shot Put record for over 43 years now. That’s longer than either Jarmila Kractocvilava has held the womens 800m. or Marita Koch has held the womens 400m world records. And, in one season, he improved the National High School record by nearly 9 feet. That percentage improvement destroys anything anyone has ever done in track over that short of a time frame. And even though he ended his career after college, he won a silver medal at the world championships while at SMU. Had he taken up track, instead of football, I often wonder if he could have put the current world record out of reach, like he did the high school one. He was a great technique teacher. He coached his daughter to a gold in the shot put in the 2016 Rio games. And here is one final, amazing fact. Since 1975 when Brian Oldfield introduced the discus approach to shot putting, it has become the sole method that most shot putters use. It wasn’t there yet in 1979, but was getting pretty popular. And because of that approach, the World Record (Which had plateaued for awhile.) began to advance, again. But Michael was a ridiculous tactician. That’s why he was aboe to raise the record so far. However, he did it, not using the discus approach, but the old school method. And despite 43 years of time passing and everyone now using a method that most experts think is superior, no one has come within 3 feet of Michael’s record. To me, this is, truly, the greatest achievement in sports. If not, then put it with Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 point game. Nothing else comes close. Here’s to Michael Carter and the most incredible achievement in track history!!!

What about Jehangir Khan's 555-match win streak in squash? What about Donald Bradman's completely untouchable test cricket batting average? There are quite a number of almost unfathomable records in sports - Nadal's 14 (and counting?) RG record. Very much enjoyed your account, though. I've often wondered about Michael Carter's ridiculous record and why that promise wasn't converted going forward.

I still got 2nd highest in the school, and 4th overall at the meet of maybe a dozen schools in the area...against older kids basically. Like, the age cutoff was based on the beginning of March, and I'm on the 3rd, so 4 days earlier and I would've been shot put champ of the area...those bastards.

I remember throwing in highschool and was excited to break the 30 foot mark. Now 25 years later... These guys are throwing 40 feet past me. Truly amazing athletes!

3:49 looking at that old shot, you can definitely tell that there must've been some error, or changes in how the game was played, There is no way that skinny guy could keep up with the giants of today.

I couldn't throw that 2 feet. Well, due to an autoimmune disease I have, but before it came out of it's dormancy, I'd still likely be unable to go 10ft. These athletes just stun me.
