Since I wrapped filming on this video before a few questions came in, here's some short answers... Q: fighting (MMA, boxing, etc.) or fishing? A: This is easy, fighting. Been a martial artist much longer than a fisherman and it's much more important to me. Q: what features do I look for when fishing for gar in a new area? A: I'm filming a whole video on this but short answer is what the fish would be looking for. Food, safety (structure), and energy conservation (current patterns, eddies). Q: do I prefer fishing alone or with friends or family? A: generally speaking, definitely alone. I like knowing any decision I make about time, dealing with the elements, and the physical effort required are going to depend only on me. I also really, really enjoy being alone outdoors (it provides an incredible mental reset that I highly value). Q: what do you do for a living? A: full time KZreadr now. Before, I worked for the Houston Zoo. Q: what inspired you to take up fishing? A: it's a means to an end, that end being able to film an incredible group of animals that most people will never see otherwise. I was initially inspired by the lack of comprehensive freshwater aquarium exhibits in comparison to saltwater exhibits in many zoos and aquariums. Q: will you ever fish the San Antonio area? A: yes, I have a trip planned for late spring/early summer Q: have you ever fished Brays Bayou near Kirby Drive (in Houston)? A: not that specific spot but upstream and downstream from there with consistent, amazing results over the years.

Those ambassadeur reels are perfect for this. They're really more of a winch than anything, especially some of the older ones. The first ones had a gear ratio around 3.8:1 if I recall correctly.
Once you get on the big fish bite on the rivers, most other freshwater fishing isn't quite the same. There really is nothing else like it. New sub. Keep it up, brother. Great content!

You are doing a great job on conservation. You catch and release and take what you want to eat. I would love to have my freezer full of fish. I think I can survive on fish only.

What's it like traveling to that part of Asia? Would you say it could be done as a first time trip out of country or would some more traveling experience be useful? When it was all said and done, would you be able to say how much it cost? (Obviously prices and costs for everything change with time). I've been actually trying to work out if filming there is feasible for the channel later this year.

@@wildlifefishingshow I stayed at Gillhams resort for three days while I was fishing and then stayed in Krabi (the local town) for a week or so after. I also travelled to Bankok, Koh Samui and Chang Mai (Some great fishing in Chang Mai too, went out on a boat for Giant Snakehead on surface lures) Thailand itself is just awesome, the people are great and will do anything they can for you and the cost of living is pretty low so you can eat well for very little. I know you like MMA as I do; there's a lot of Thai boxing events always on, I went to one just up the road from Gillhams and it was cool. I'm from the UK so not sure how much more the travel cost would be for you but you wouldn't regret it I'm sure. Stuart is a lovely chap and I'm sure he'd be happy to help you with anything as would his family. His daughter collected us from the airport and as our luggage was on the wrong flight she took us to the supermarket to buy clothes.

I'm in Houston and familiar with the bayou's you're fishing. How deep are the cement bayous normally? How deep is buffalo bayou running along memorial thru downtown normally?
@wildlifefishingshow
2 жыл бұрын
Normally they are about four feet in the very center (that inner channel in the concrete) but this area is about six to eight feet deep on average and doesn't seem to have the same structure on the bottom (one big channel base). Best I could tell, Buffalo Bayou is about eight or ten feet deep where it runs through downtown and quickly drops to about forty feet deep after that.
is there only mullet located in the Houston bayou? Or where else can I find some, I'm located in Humble.

What kind of rod and reel combos are best for catfish and or gar
@wildlifefishingshow
2 жыл бұрын
Well catfish are a lot easier to gear up for. If you're throwing light baits, the Abu and Ugly Stik GX2 I'm using in this video work great. For heavier baits a Big Cat Fever rod with a heavier reel like a Daiwa BG 6500 or Shimano Tekota 600 if you go conventional. For gar, my favorite rods are the Denali Bottom Feeder heavy action, the Big Cat Fever, and the BnM Silver Cat Elite. I use Penn Fierce III 8000, Daiwa BG 6500, and Piscifun Salis X 3000.
Hey can you plz let me know where I can buy some of your catfish rigs your using

We take out our Snake Groups (beginners) and do Smaller Groups(3-6) of us without taking the beginners that you'd be more than welcome to join. We catch from 5-30+ snakes at a time including various toad/frogs, spiders, turtles etc. Chip is our main go to guy for The Woodlands trips. Dude is the one who takes us to his favorite places. Hit us up. March-Oct we hold trips. Copperheads. Cottonmouths. Corals. All the watersnakes. 1 mudsnake. Racers, Rats, rough greens. Hognose etc. Some Parks stay open just for us and a few Park Rangers go along(kinda boring when they do🤷♂️)

How good do those GX2 rods hold up to big fish and Gar? What's a good spinning rod to catch Alligator Gar with?
@wildlifefishingshow
10 ай бұрын
They can handle decent catfish, but they won't handle a gar much over 50lb. Best spinning rods for gar are Denali Bottom Feeder rods, which are the ones I use and a company I work with now. denalifishing.com/products/bottom-feeder-series I have a discount code, WL2022 that will get you 20% off. Most of my giant fish have been caught on these rods.

@wildlifefishingshow

@jaycash259 It's good for as long as I'm partnered with Denali (so until further notice). That reel would work well with the medium heavy Denali Bottom Feeder. If you can or want to spend a bit more, the Abu Garcia C7000 is good too. If you want to spend more, my personal favorite is the Shimano Tekota 600.
Bro I just had a big one got it snagged up against the boat ramp snapped the line bro they bite had two or three get away and I feel the pull
Interesting take on evasive fish culling. For you actually got a good point. So, what is the solution? My thoughts are to actually start a invasive commercial fish industry may actually help lower the population? Your thoughts on this?
@wildlifefishingshow
2 жыл бұрын
I think that's a huge part of the solution. The problem they are running into with that is just PR issues (nobody wants to eat carp and I get that).

Hi I could not find the cat fish catch n cook
Btw is your leg feeling better
why use 50lb braid if gar get way bigger than that. And will you ever fish for red with lures?
@wildlifefishingshow
2 жыл бұрын
Because it's colder right now and there's all that construction at the end of the bayou, the gar have moved out of this little area for now. They'll probably start moving back in when the temperature rises again but in the meantime it's a fun opportunity to use lighter tackle (relatively speaking) where my chances are 99% going to be big blues. Eventually I'll go after reds and such with lures again, right now those videos aren't doing well on my channel.
