I don't watch many celeb interviews but with certain actors I do because you know you're guaranteed a good chat and not them looking bored out of their skull and like they want to kill every interviewer that asks them a question. I like James McAvoy because no matter what he always tries for the audience. He understands press is part of his job and he's charming and personable. James McAvoy is a very intelligent and well-spoken person. I enjoy a good interview with him because he gives so much more regarding his portrayal and his views on the concept behind every performance he has done. But what stood out for me here was the interviewer's comments on the opening scene of the movie and McAvoy's response. We have here a three-hour horror movie here dealing with a supernatural murderous clown and the thing that frightened and disgusted and angered me the most in this movie was the scene of normal people viciously attacking and trying to kill an innocent couple. Like McAvoy pointed out- this had nothing to do with the clown. This was just normal Americans being the hateful violent POS a great deal of them truly are. Sickening. That scene will remain with me longer than any of the clown scenes will.

I also think it does have an impact though. It's something that goes on every day to people of the LGBTQ community, people seek them out and viciously attack them in the streets. I'm straight but I think it's trying to bring awareness to what humans do to others that are gay.

[spoiler alert] [and a 4-month delay] That scene was there to prepare the background for Richie's internal drama. In chapter one every character has to deal with some personal trauma - and Richie? He's for the most part an annoying gobshite acting a tough guy. We don't get to know why he is that way and whether he's going through anything painful. In fact we get to know next to nothing about him in comparison to other characters. The second chapter vindicates him. We get to experience the terror of being a closeted gay in a place like Derry, where being outed is more than risky. And we see that his cockiness is meant to cover up the fact that he is a "fairy". Really well done, imho. The exposition of Richie's painful experience of having to hide his identity under a facade is supported by the sheer structure of those films (in case of the rest of the characters the exposition was carried out in a less subtle, straightforward way.) Now that's rather smart.

For Mcevoy it was almost the opposite to X men. He had to watch Patrick Stewarts Xavier and do a younger version of him, then he had to watch the film IT and play an older version of the character.

James McAvoy is an amazing actor. He deserves so much more respect than what he is given. This man is amazing and wonderful but people just don’t see the talent. He was robbed at the Oscars and I will always hold it against the stupid ass academy. Let me vote, I will give the people what we truly deserve. Keep going and being amazing James. ♥️♥️♥️🤴

that's the point tho, that scene has nothing to do with pennywise, it's humans doing that to humans. I've never heard of a sewer clown ripping out a guy's heart out in real life, but I've heard about gay people getting beat up and murdered a lot. it's harder when it's real.

deoreoweo b I think it’s general homophobia but also (as per the book) how Derry itself has a general evilness to it which isn’t really conveyed as much in the movie. Yeah that scene was rough to watch. It is book canon though, down to the balloons covering the whole underside of the bridge. 🤡

  • @deureop

@@jmag579 I mean I definitely think the scene should be in the film, but people have the right to be upset watching it/not wanting to see it. it's annoying how people are like "pennywise is cancelled for homophobia lmao" when that's absolutely not what it is.

I concur with so many of these comments; James comes across as a real genuine individual, with impeccable charm and little to no pretence. They're probably an introvert at heart, but overcome that by making someone they just met seem like they've been buddies for decades. Something I'm quite familiar with..but lacking the very positive and stable charm.
