Bob Dylan has saved my life. My wife cheated on me and I was laid off from a place I had worked for 12 years.. My life was practically ruined and I was on the verge of committing suicide.. But after listening to Bob Dylan's amazing and intriguing songs I had suddenly become a new person with a fresh perspective in life! Thank you , Bob.

So modest and quiet in interviews, it is odd that Dylan has difficulty seeing the greatness of his own music. A man of few words in person, yet he was able to express the realities and pathos of humanity so articulately through his music like no one before or since.

I don't think he had trouble seeing the greatness in his own music. I'm currently reading his biography and it seems clear that he always knew he was destined for greatness, even when he couldn't get a gig and was sleeping on couches and floors. He told one of his early girlfriends that she should keep a recording she had made of him so that she could one day sell it to the library of congress, and that was before he even had a record deal or even that many paid gigs.

I get the feeling this is quite wrong but I'm not sure how to best express why. Well, I'mma keep it mostly simple: Is modesty/humility really regarded as something bad? I guess in this day and age and brainwashed world of swag and "success" and promotion of the worst insecurities and complexes and need for constant affirmation or whatever, the answer is yes. What artists do you listen to and give attention to? There are many who write great lyrics even nowadays. Lastly, I too kinda try to write lyrics (more like, thoughts that rhyme), but judging by what ppl want to listen to (seeing the views of artists with deeper lyrics get, and the things and opinions and posts that are popular and gain popularity in general) I doubt anyone like me who isn't a definite gem in the way legends of older days were, would ever have a reason to be anything but modest, lol. And tbh I'm grateful because letting fame etc get into your brain&soul is just a scary thought, I criticize ppl who do that and turning into something similar is the last thing I'd want to be, and you never know or can be sure that you'll be 100% mature and serious no matter what. But generally speaking, I don't think someone who has little to no confidence believes they're just useless, you can be down to earth and feel a powerless human/being but still have something to offer. I am not aware and haven't ever read any interview etc of him, but I doubt Dylan says his music is unworthy tho. Maybe he means it's not perfect. Maybe he's focusing on the flaws and lets the perfectionist in him talk... Or maybe it's just a defense mechanism to deny the usual repercussions of thinking you're too great. Or, he doesn't like the exaggerations ppl parrot. I'd agree on all the above btw. p.s. saying simple and complex stuff (truths) in a few lines and doing it beautifully and consistently at that, sure isn't easy, but with the right support and inspiration/imagination and spark, and partners, I think it's doable in the long run. The truly talented and hard-working and methodical and lucky ppl can achieve it at a young age, but others get their chance later, or never. In any case, I think the modesty, which comes with realism (not cynicism - ppl often mix these), and the resistance to the wrong mentalities (and sides/circles), do play a part and are the real foundations of timeless greatness. Imagine singing only about "love" and what's popular (this includes various stuff and I guess it's debatable to an extent, imho it's not just about what's being *most* popular, which can sometimes be the right side anyway) and thinking you're doing god's work. And imagine you're a simple person who just does their thing, and thinking you're godly. Well... sounds like a paradox to me.

Go away from my window Leave at your own chosen speed I'm not the one you want, babe I'm not the one you need You say you're lookin' for someone Who's never weak but always strong To protect you and defend you Whether you are right or wrong Someone to open each and every door. But it ain't me, babe No, no, no, it ain't me, babe It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe. Go lightly from the ledge, babe Go lightly on the ground I'm not the one you want, babe I'll only let you down You say you're lookin' for someone Who'll promise never to part Someone to close his eyes to you Someone to close his heart Someone to die for you and more. But it ain't me, babe No, no, no, it ain't me, babe It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe. You say you're lookin' for someone To pick you up each time you fall To gather flowers constantly And to come each time you call And will love you for your life And nothin' more. Nobody does Dylan better than Dylan - ever. It is an utter impossibility. I don't listen to music at all, except what happens to come while visiting a neighbour or the sound track on a movie. After two or three years of mostly silence, the urge comes and I listen to some Dylan albums. I get electrified with waves of goose bumps, I see visions, I cry like a baby, I can feel my soul quivering. I am filled to overflowing, purged of grief, and ready for another two or three years of silence. So, Thomas Schmidt, I don't have the slightest doubt, that our mutual friend saved you. Also this song is even more relevant than it was fifty odd years ago, so many women need to understand this message. Dylan is not a poet or a musician, he is a healer and a lamp unto our feet. The Lord has a special place at the wedding feast for Bob.

This recording was great for many reasons ...Cooper's organ and Mike Bloomfield's guitar along with the genius of Dylan our greatest songwriter. My thoughts of Dylan go back to high school when I won a bet that I couldn't recite all the words to Desolation Row. That was such a great recording as well because Columbia Records producer Bob Johnson invited Nashville guitar session man Charlie McCoy to play on it and he asked " what do you want me to fill in with"...Bob told him to just play all the way through and the result was a masterpiece...

of all of dylan's songs, this is my favorite. it helped me thru a nervous breakdown & i wrote the words on posterboard & hung them over my bed. who but dylan would have the balls to sing this kind of truth.

This was the first Bob Dylan song I had ever heard and it was Kesha who was singing it. I never really liked her rendition of it but I loved the lyrics and the message the song addressed :) Nothing is better than the original. and I can say now after the very first night I heard this song I've been a big fan of Dylan :)

What's interesting is Bobs hero besides Woody Guthrie was Buddy Holly, and Holly died Feb 1959. Exactly one year later Bob hitchhiked to New York city and started playing down in Greenwich village where Holly lived. Holly had an apartment on 5th avenue and 6th the Brevoort building" not more than 100 yards from the clubs and coffee shops where Dylan played for a year. Holly did the same thing when he was in town, so it is not likely, it is all but certain that if Holly lived he would have run across Bob. I drove a Yellow taxi in New York city in the 80s and 90s and picked a woman up from the Brevoort building around 1984 and she said she grew up there and was invited to a party over Hollys place and said he "had the amazing ability to make up a song on the spot" Meaning music, lyrics much like rappers you hear today.

"It Ain't Me Babe" is a song by Bob Dylan that originally appeared on his fourth album Another Side of Bob Dylan, which was released in 1964 by Columbia Records. According to music critic Oliver Trager, this song, along with others on the album, marked a departure for Dylan as he began to explore the possibilities of language and deeper levels of the human experience.[1] Within a year of its release, the song was picked up as a single by artists who were forging the folk rock movement, including The Turtles and The Byrds.[2]Dylan's biographers generally agree that the song owes its inspiration to his former girlfriend Suze Rotolo. He reportedly began writing the song during his visit to Italy in 1963 while searching for Rotolo, who was studying there.[1][3]

I believe the song more about Joan Baez. Suze Rotolo is the reference on "Don't Think Twice" she kinda broke Dylan's heart when she left him - to study in Italy - met someone there and married the guy. You can see all this on Scorsese's Dylan documentary "No Direction Home" - In addition to his music, in-depth interveiws with Dylan, Baez, and Rotolo . . . hope this helps Chloe888
