    I used to run used motor oil in my (now sold) 3.1, I would filter it and add petrol, diesel, kerosene in various quantity's. Had to be careful with the ratio of diesel/oil because too much oil and the injectors and the fuel filter would clog up.

    Sounds like you need a new starter motor and 650cca or higher battery. 8 second cranks before rest. It's likely a new battery and alternator is due if starter motor is performing poorly, TLDR check n overhaul electrical system. I deal with 3.0 engines all day here in NZ, once I've touched them, they are stable long running economical beasts with 18psi boost and 159 to 170 HP on the Dino, these 20 year old dinosaurs are fierce.

  • @CarAddictGarageNE

    @CarAddictGarageNE

    Just bolts directly to bell housing, only things you need to adapt are the Vac system, few relays for glow plugs and fuel pump shut off, main thing that’s difficult to sort out is the rev counter. Bar that it’s plug and play

    I'd have to take issue with you over your sweeping condemnation of the 3.0 engine. Yes, an early form of common rail, designed by Caterpillar, but the injectors are pressurised by oil from the sump via a seperate pump. Look up HUEI injection system . People used to the 3.1 treated the 3.0 the same, using any old diesel-lube oil they had handy. Big mistake, you HAD to use 10W30 fully synthetic in these engines. The other change which has reduced the problems with these engines is the availability of Tech2 diagnostic units, from China. Ordinary code scanners won't work. Also worth noting, you do have a timing belt, behind a front cover. Worth changing, because you never know when it was done last. With most of the ECU disconnected, does your 4wd still work?

  • @CarAddictGarageNE

    @CarAddictGarageNE

    9 ай бұрын

    Well the 3.0 was definitely a let down over the 3.1 in many areas…. Not everyone ran them on poor diesel or neglected them, and they still continued to have major issue. Yes the 4x4 worked perfectly, as the only 2 ports that were disconnected were for engine only. I’m not saying the 3.0 is all bad, but in comparison a big let down vs the 3.1

  • @nigelmchugh5541

    @@CarAddictGarageNE I agree, they give trouble with both injector and injector sleeve seals. They needed more maintenance than the 3.1, but on the other hand, nobody complained about the extra 30hp... Isuzu also ignored Caterpillar's recommendation that engine oil should be changed at 5000km, and went with 10,000km to equal Toyota's service interval. The resulting warranty claims almost finished Isuzu as a seller of 4x4 trucks. Even their dealers didn't want to see a Trooper coming in....

    The single biggest issue is carbon deposits in the oil The sensors Fook out after a while. So delete EGR, superflush the oil circuits. It may seem like two oil circuits on this engine but it's actually one as it does join with the low pressure circuit. Injectors issues are mainly due to overheating events aka cooling issues, flattening the 5$ worth of orings, or 100,000km usage. Commonly diagnosed as cracked head... Just like any engine these 3.0 engines are easy to diagnose with tech2.😢 Easy to maintain, you can drive it like you stole it, abuse it as if your about to sell it and it'll still operate as normal. What a monster of an engine. Y'all have no idea. 4jg2 engine, slow, costly in diesel consumption but reliable as. 4jgw are fairly bullet proof like the 4jb1. 4jx1 feels like a V6 is power compared to 4jg2. I run an Isuzu wizard but own several Bighorns aswell. I cannot express the power difference of the two, the 4jx1 gaps a 4jg2 right off the mark. Instantaneously responsive like a ford falcon, and it's first gear in the wizard are bighorn differ from 4jg2 builds. I love these machines, even the 4jg2;) but I swap the 3.1 out for the 3.0 instead on request after bighorn owner drives my 4jx1 machines. Needless to say, the small town I'm in is full of these things now.

  • @1927deano

    @1927deano

    Very common for the swap, a common mod is to put the uprated turbo from the 3.0 on the 3.1 for a bit more oomph
