Isuzu MU-X/D-MAX annoying ISSUE! || Ringing/Singing Noise @ 80-100Km/hr from Knuckle Seal's- DIY FIX

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

G'day Guy's and Gal's
In this video I discuss one of the big issues with the Isuzu Mu-x, Isuzu D-max, Holden Colorado, Holden Trailblazer. The Issue is with the knuckle seal between the CV shaft and the steering knuckle. When the knuckle seal becomes contaminated with water, grime and dust it can dry the seal out. Once the seal dry's out it causes friction between the seal and the metal dust boot which creates a very annoying singing/ringing sound at highway speeds. This issue with usually start between 80-100km/hr but some times it can start at lower speeds too.
In my video I show to two methods to rectify the Isuzu Mu-x and D-max knuckle seal contamination issue. The two methods involve lubrication the knuckle seals in two different ways. The two methods are -
1. Jack the vehicle up and use some Inox spray lubricant to lubricate the knuckle seals while spinning the wheel.
2. Jack the vehicle up, remove the wheel, hub bolts, hub cover, cv shaft circlip and shims. Pop the CV shaft out of the back of the hub and lubricate the rubber knuckle seal with either rubber grease or HTB bearing grease.
The Issue with the Isuzu Mu-x and the Isuzu D-max is that the hub seals are very vulnerable to getting muddy or dusty. You will sometimes notice this noise after rain and water crossings due to the water from the rain washing away the lubricant on the seals. The squealing sound from the front of the vehicle may start just after a rainy day driving around town.
In my video I give you a thorough DIY Guide to fixing the squealing, singing, ringing hub/knuckle seals. I try to make the video very clear and straight forward so even people without much mechanical knowledge can carry out the repair and get back on the road.
The First method that I demonstrate is more of a temporary repair. Spraying the inox spray behind the hub seals is a quick and easy way to stop the annoying singing, ringing noise at highway speeds. In the long term though the noise with usually always return if you do regular 4WD trips, water crossings, dirt road driving or driving in the rain.
The Second method that I demonstrate is a permanent fix. By packing either HTB Bearing Grease or Rubber grease into the metal dust boot and onto the seal it protects the seal from contamination. The Grease will act as a barrier between water, grime and dust. It will also last a lot longer then the inox spray as it wont wash away easily.
You will require some basic tools to carry out the first method -
1. Floor Jack ( Factory jack OK )
2. Inox lubricant spray
3. Rags for cleaning
You will require some basic tools to carry out this DIY Maintenance repair if you are carrying out the second method, Including -
1. 1/2" breaker bar
2. 1/2" short extension
3. 1/2" 19mm socket
4. 1/2" 8mm HEX drive
5. Circlip Pliers
6. Floor Jack (factory jack OK)
7. Jack Stands
8. Silicone Sealant or Loctite 515 sealant (Factory sealant loctite 515)
9. Razor blade or wire wheel for cleaning hub sealant
10. Rags and Brake cleaner for cleaning parts
11. HTB bearing grease or Rubber Grease.
Weather you carry out the first repair to the hub/knuckle and CV seals, just ensure that you carry out the same repair to both sides. This will ensure that you will fix your annoying squealing, singing, ringing sound from the front hub seals/knuckle seals. If this video did help you fix your annoying noise, please let me know down in the comments! I'd like to make this video a bit of a talking space for everyone to discuss any issues you may be having with your vehicle. If you can add your opinion, experience or issue to the comments we can all work together to help diagnose and fix all of these annoying issues that our vehicles may have! So leave me a comment and read through the comments to see if you can help fix somebody's issue too.
I aim to film a few more videos related to Common issues with the Isuzu Mu-x and D-max. This will also apply for Holden Colorado and Colorado 7 because a lot of the parts on these vehicles are the same.
Thanks a lot for watching :) :)

Thanks Nick have this sort of issue with my 2016 Dmax the hollow sounding rumble or medium pitched sound appeared recently, at 60 to 80 k's an hour as i back off on the throttle not under load and not really high pitched so I thought it might be some sort of bearing problem, at first I thought wheels or axle bearings but my local mech thinks it's a diff bearing, so I'm gonna mention to him to check this out first, as I'm over 70 and can't this type of maintenence anymore - bugga hope that's what it turns out nto be3 as diff bearing sounds expensive - only time will tell.

  • @LowRangeNick

    @LowRangeNick

    Жыл бұрын

Thanks a lot Richard 😀 The brakes tend to get a lip on the rotors over time and the brake pads can contact the rusty edge of the disc when braking. This creates a squeal when braking. You have a few different options. If the brake pads look fine you can chamfer the edge of the pads so they don't contact the edge of the disc. You can also get the discs machined so they are completely flat again and you can replace the brakes at the same time. Either should fix the squeal. I ended up chamfering my brake pads and this has fixed the squealing.

Thats good! The brakes on the isuzus are very squeaky and tend to squeal a lot. Usually it's the front brake pads contacting the dirty worn edge of the brake disc. What you can do is give the brake pads a small chamfer to stop the squealing noises. Just make sure that there is still enough brake pad left before chamfering.

The 4x2 doesn't have front cvs. It's most likely noisy brakes or the hub seal becoming noisy.

@@MD091019 you could try greasing the hub seals and see if it fixes the issue. Probably best to do it when the wheel bearings are being replaced next.

Hi Jordan, the rear hubs and wheelbearings are a different setup. If your getting similar noises it is more then likely related to the brakes or handbrake shoes.

I'm getting a noise from my front brakes that are driving me crazy ! 😖 While driving they squeak and when I press the brake the noise stops. It only has been driven for 6,600km since new 2018 D-Max model, pads are still new. If you have any tips on what it could be, please help me cause it's driving me knuts 😭

It sounds like the vehicle doesn't get driven too much or it sits around a bit with that sort of kms on a 2018 model. When your driving the vehicle just try and figure out Wether the noise is coming from the front or rear brakes. You can try when it's making the noise to pull the handbrake on a bit and see if it stops the noise. If it does, it may just need the handbrake adjusted and rear brakes cleaned out. Otherwise it could just be a bit of corrosion on the brake discs and pads. You can try a few different things. Firstly take the vehicle for a good drive and find a very safe spot that you can do some nice long heavy brakes. Say from 100kmhr to 60kmhr. Try and bed those pads in and clean up the disc a bit. If this doesn't improve the noise what you can try and do is remove all the wheels and inspect the rear drum brakes and discs/ pads for any signs of rocks, wear and check the anti vibration shims on the front pads are sitting in the correct spots. Remove the front brakes and put a very small chamfer on the pads and clean and adjust the rear brakes when the drums are back on. See if that fixes the issue.

@@LowRangeNick The previous owner I bought it from had it for the first 4 year and he only drove it for it's first 4,300km. I own it for the past 4 months, in witch I drove it over 2,000km. I took it to a professional mechanic and he opened the rear drums and clean what little brake dust there was. Then cleand the front discs and made a small chamfer to the edge of the pads. He also changed the brake fluid so that it's fresh. I tried lifting the hand brake while driving and it want stop, it only stops when I press the brake foot pedal. It does not need to be pressed hard, I barely touch the foot pedal and the noise stops.

@@stone4858 It sounds like the mechanic has done all of the normal steps to diagnose the issue. That's annoying that it still hasn't resolved itself after all of that work. You could try lubricating the Knuckle seals and see if it changes the noise or resolves it.

@@LowRangeNick I told my mechanic about them because I saw some other videos you have, but he's convinced that since the noise does not start when you drive the truck for the first 5 minutes (first thing in the morning) and when I press the pedal brake it stops he told me it has to be coming from the front brake. He also asked me to try and do some heavy braking just as you suggested. I'll talk to him again about what we said. I really hope I can solve this problem because I love the truck but this sound is killing me 😔. Thanks very much for all your help buddy, I really appreciate it a lot 🙂
