They didn't, the tank crew didn't get info in time that there were friendlies in the area, the infantryman were pointing their rifle out the windows and the tank crew spotted them and shot 2 rounds thinking they were Hamas fighters, friendly fire is very common in combat, during iraq war many US and british soldiers died due to friendly fire incidents
