Israeli checkpoints: Hard Crossings | Al Jazeera World

Ойын-сауық

Israeli checkpoints in the occupied West Bank have become part of everyday life for the thousands of Palestinians who must pass through them daily.
Israel claims that the checkpoints are vital to stop suicide bombers entering its cities.
But critics say they are a form of collective punishment - effectively sealing off Palestinian cities, hindering travel and access to schools and medical care and jeopardising any hopes for peace.
Hazem al-Qawasmeh, the founder of Karama, or the International Campaign for Freedom of Movement for Palestinians, says: "These military checkpoints restrict Palestinians' movement and turn their cities into prisons. The West Bank has now become a big prison. It is separated from the Gaza Strip and Jerusalem.
"Qalandiya checkpoint is one of the worst checkpoints in the West Bank. Palestinians have to wait there for hours as they try to cross from the West Bank to Jerusalem."
Hard Crossings follows the Palestinians who must navigate these checkpoints and for whom they have become a frustrating and often humiliating feature of daily life.

    Al Jazeera..This Report is very one-sided. You usually do a better job presenting all sides, so why in this report do skip the reasons that these Draconian measures need to be taken? Most of the crossings mentioned are between the State of Israel, and the Palestinian Territory. These are Border crossings and every Border in the world between two Countries requires certain checks and papers. You can't just walk from one country to another willy nilly. Palestinians that like to complain about getting into Israel, need to find jobs, hospitals, and schools in their own territory. Israel is doing them a favor by letting them in. Now after I said all that Israel needs to step up their game and provide a way to Vette Palestinians, so that they can cross into Israel with the minimum of fuss.

  • @TheNaturalust

    @TheNaturalust

    8 жыл бұрын

    +jfrich1 Yes a bit one sided but how are they going to show suicide bombing when they have basically stopped. All these checkpoint have only stopped 1 or 2 attempts as far as I know. And yes some of the crossing mentioned are international (glad you are recognizing the territories as a separate country) but the great majority of similar ones are checkpoints within the West Bank. Why should Israel need to control movement of Palestinians within their own territory? Protecting illegal settlers doesn't cut it, imo, they have no right to be there unless they bought their land outright from a willing Palestinian. Palestinians should bill the Israel gov't for every hour of their time wasted at these checkpoints over an hour.

  • @jfrich1

    @jfrich1

    8 жыл бұрын

    +TheNaturalust Israel has no business interfering with the movements of Palestinians within the Territories. They should only be concerned with movement between Israel and the Palestinian Territories. I understand Israel's motivation in wanting to prevent terror attacks, however that is no excuse for the maltreatment of the Palestinians. Both sides need to come up with a joint solution on how to deal with the extremists.

  • @TheNaturalust

    jfrich1 I agree 100%. At some point the cost and methods to prevent terror become absurd and corrupted. I don't know the answer but believe the root causes are better addressed through education and opportunity than sheer force. Trying to wipe out terror with such authoritative and forceful means just seems to create more terrorists from my observations.

  • @jfrich1

    @jfrich1

    8 жыл бұрын

    Right you are! The harder Israel comes down on the Palestinians the more terrorists they inspire. What I have noticed since the increased crackdown is more moderate Palestinians willing to support and join the extremists. Violence breeds Violence it's a never ending vicious circle, and Israel needs to backoff and allow cooler heads to prevail. The only solution I can see ending the standoff is for the States in the region to accept Israel (Israel isn't going anywhere), and for the promised Palestinian State to be created. Accomplishing both of these goals will take a lot of pride swallowing on all sides, and the cooperation of most if not all the States in the world not just those in the Middle East. The Israelis and Palestinians need to come together as neither are prepared to vacate the holy land, and with respect, cooperation, and hard work miracles can and do happen. The global community needs to engage with both peoples, and make this a reality. We could be looking at the flashpoint for the next world war, and no one wants that!

  • @TheNaturalust

    jfrich1 I agree but see that there has been a very profitable Palestinian Conflict Industry built up that needs to be overcome. The corrupt PA leaders profit, the NGO's all profit and Israel obviously profits. How to you change and fight against something where all the people capable of instigating change are operating in the black? Something has to occur that makes peace more profitable that the perpetual conflict. In my opinion that can only be a huge and grass roots non-violent resistance movement by the Palestinians coupled with some more ICC rulings. Only then will they have the prerequisite legal-moral authority coupled with international support which will force first the USA and then Israel to act to create a viable two-state solution. Something modeled after the American Civil Rights movement. It is the only way at this point, all other avenues will just lead to more of the same or worse, imo.

    Peace between Israel and the Palestinians is as elusive as ever, with the level of mistrust between Israel's government and Hamas, between Hamas and Fatah, and between Israel's government and Fatah. If there's anything encouraging, the level of suicide bombings in Israel has dropped down to near-zero. I would argue the border between Russia and Novorossiya (the latter encompassing the Moscow-backed Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics, formerly controlled, on the western side, by Ukraine's government) is more dangerous than the Israel-West Bank border.

    The United Nation and the palestinians are the problem in this situation because The PLO and the UN want to build a Palestinian Nation whose people are totally dependent on Israel for their daily lives.Look at this people confess their livelyhood depends on Israel.The Question is,why dont they get their goods from Jordan coz its a neighbour,its logic.Also,what do they want in Israel that they dont have in West Bank.If your child said they want to live in their own house because they dont like living with you any more,you give them that freedom,then they come back to your house all the time to get food from the cupboard and the fridge,what was the point of moving out in the first place?They are not independent they depend on Israel for food,electricity,clothing,school,hospitals and everything else. West Bank not ready to be a country because it doesnt have 1. organized economic activity that regulates foreign and domestic trade and issues money; 2.Sovereignty so that no other country has power over its territory; 3.An Education System 4.A transportation network for moving goods and people THE PEOPLE IN THE VIDEO JUST CONFESSED THEY DONT HAVE ALL OF THE ABOVE AND ARE DEPENDENT TO ISRAEL STATE FOR ALL THESE THINGS. And on having an ID when crossing the border,its absolutely normal,we all proof our Identification with a passport when we are travelling to other countries at all airports and get scanned so its not something new,I can imagine entering Germany without my passport hahaha that would never happen,not in this life And on who and how they invented the name west bank,its Judea and Samaria occupied by people from all corners of the world that called themselves Palestinians.Did you know Arafat was from Egypt?Arafat was born in Egypt,moved to Israel the started fighting for a Palestinian nation,its in the internet,you just google it.

    It is important that we are made aware of the plight of the ordinary Palestinians, but this is very one sided. The aid worker refers to the fact that Palestine has become a prison for its inhabitants, but jailer perhaps they need to look to their own leaders to find the jailers. The tunnels mentioned briefly at the end are used to smuggle guns and explosives into Israel. While the terrorist kill Israeli citizens the checkpoints will remain and foreign companies won’t invest. Israel’s need to ensure the safety of its citizens is dismissed as an excuse, but the murders and bombings speak for themselves.

    This Arab propaganda station goes into great great detail about the so-called humiliation of going through these checkpoints, but dedicates less than one sentence towards explaining the reason why these crossings even exist. First of all they are considered crossings as these Palestinians are crossing the green line into Israel proper. Secondly Al Jazeera doesn't bother to interview anyone from the Israeli side other than some leftist Israeli apologists. It is thanks to Palestinian suicide bombers who blew up Israeli children in pizzerias and on buses that these people have to go through these checkpoints. They have Hamas to blame. Don't blame Israel for trying to defend themselves. This goes with the wall too. As soon as the wall went up, suicide bombing stopped COMPLETELY.

By my calcutions you're got at least another 50 years to fight your side. If you don't like thie treatment then figure out what it would take for Israelis to want to do any differently. Remember that negative actions on your part will get you negative behavior on the part of Israelis. Remember all of those commenerations of the Nakba? Well we do too and as long as this is going on its going to be impossible to get Israelis ro do anything different on their part. If you don't like it that is the point as far as Israel is concerned.

    Judaism is actually very anti-Zionist, at least the kind Israel holds up as necessary and whose violence is argued as being inevitable. And a lot of Palestinian society is secular and thinks about issues of Israeli (not Jewish) domination through secular issue. This even comes out even in this video. Religion is not the problem, just how leaders and the media use it as the only prism with which the people think!
