Life in the shadows: Palestinians in Lebanon - Al Jazeera World

Ойын-сауық

In 1948, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced to leave their country during the ‘Nakba’, the ‘catastrophe’, the founding of the state of Israel.
The majority of Palestinians in Lebanon retain the hope of one day returning home - known internationally as ‘the right of return’ - but almost seven decades later, refugee camps have become part of the urban landscape of Lebanon.
Over a quarter-of-a-million Palestinians still live in the 12 UN-registered camps and 42 other so-called ‘gatherings’ across Lebanon. Lebanon is their home but any chance of becoming a genuine part of the communities they live in is constantly undermined by strict laws ‘protecting’ Lebanese citizens’ rights, general safety and well-being.

I lived and worked in Bourj al-Barajneh in the 1980s and have visited all the Palestinian refugee camps. This powerful documentary describes the desperate situation of the 1948 Palestine refugees in Lebanon. Because of Lebanon's internal sectarian divisions the Palestinians are the victims of discrimination. Their human rights and dignity are violated and they are being robbed of a future. This is why young people are forced to leave and find a better future. These are all ripple effects of the historic tragedy of the Palestinian Nakba of 1948, that drove so many Palestinians into exile.

I am Lebanese and I support the Palestinian cause, however, the law's in most of the world are strict on refugees, not just in Lebanon. Lebanon is a small country, the Lebanese citizens who have rights are struggling and cannot find jobs, the electricity is cut all over Lebanon not just in the camps, and even the Lebanese people feel as if they don't have rights. This documentary is making it seem as if the Palestinians are being targeted and this is not the case. Everywhere in the world non-citizens do not have full rights. I feel as the Palestinians should be grateful that they are not living in Gaza or the West bank under bullets. At least in Lebanon you go to sleep not worrying about missiles. Its not like Lebanon is this 1st world country and you are the only ones who are suffering. Even the Lebanese people who have rights are suffering.

Also, the Lebanese are protecting their own people with regards to jobs, business etc. They don't want competition. Almost 70 years later here I am living in the United States in Chicago and my dad is a physician. I'm lucky not to be living in Ain Al Hilweh. Im just 16 years old I can't imagine what they went through. I've been to the Ain Al Hilweh on multiple occasions and it's terrible there. I still have a lot of family members that live in the camp and a lot who got to escape and have a better lifestyle in Lebanon. Palestinians are marginalized but also looked down upon by many of the Lebanese. I only see people as equals so during my visit it was not easy to listen to cousins speak poorly about Palestinians or the Syrians who crossed into Lebanon in the early years of the Syrian war. Most of the land of Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon were part of greater Syria. In the grand scheme, how can one not believe that we are not brothers and sisters? As far as dialects are concerned, they are no different than people who are from Boston vs people who live west of the city and closer to the border of New York state. Even in the second largest city, one knows who grew up on the west or east side of the city by their word pronunciations. I know that recipes, be they meals or pastries, vary slightly from region to region of Lebanon, Palestine and Syria. What matters most is that we are all human. Regardless who one thinks they are, we are "One Humanity" where people must be treated equally and with dignity. Governments are what cause divisiveness.

I hate when they say Palestinians aren’t allowed to study or work in Lebanon. This is so untrue. Just like anyone in the world if they are educated they can have jobs and work just like anyone else. The unrwa gives them monthly salaries. Back in the days they tried to take other countries. The PLO tried to take Jordan and they caused a lot of attacks and killed a lot of people as they did in Lebanon. My uncle was shot several times by Palestinians although he used to support them. He was in the hospital for a year. He had a terrible life after that and died at a very young age because they didn’t want support from a Lebanese. I hate how everyone generalizes and points fingers then say look how Lebanese people treat these people when on the contrary they have land to live on and a life to live and some live even much better than Lebanese families. I don’t think alot of people have read about history to know that people who are “victims “ are not always innocent. I have alot of Palestinian friends but I don’t like extremists who pretend that the world is over and act like they are so mistreated because they are not (the ones abroad). I will always feel bad for those losing their lives in Palestine but to expect to have a red carpet abroad is something imaginary for anyone and I say it again, a lot are doing much better than Lebanese citizens. There are alot of rich Palestinians living in Lebanon and they own companies, work and are treated just like anyone else. Stop this untrue news just to advertise people in a bad way.

Even if the Lebanese find work they rarely make enough to even get by. It’s actually a Very poor country most of it. So they leave opportunities to help their own people first which is unfair. Israel is responsible for all this. Shame.

As an Israeli, i truly feel sorry for these people. I understand that we have responsibility for them as side in war conflict, which created the Palestinian refugees problem. But, the refugee host countries, some of which was also part in the war, policy toward Palestinians only intensifies their suffering. There is place for Palestinian country in West bank and Gaza, but it would not be able to host all the descendants of original refugees. As well, Israel would not able to take any significant amount of refugees in addition to 1.9M Israeli Arabs population as it would dramatically change the demographics and eliminate dream for safe homeland for Jewish people. The is no other option, but to find a solution for the refugees descendants within the host countries. Those, who dreamed to wipe Israel and its population out for last 70 years, would dream for another 700 at least.

The US had nothing to do with that, actually they only sided with Israel after the 67' war, when they realized that it was a powerful country with an important future. That being said, I don't agree that it is impossible to keep the country safe for jews with all of the descendants of original refugees. We just need to change our mindset. It's true that it would change demographics, but you could make a constitution that doesn't change the Jewish status, but you also recognize a Palestinian status. Being fair is the only way of having a long lasting peace. Having justice with both sides. Both sides need to recognize the right of the other people to live there. Otherwise you are only perpetuating the suffering of both people.

Well they failed miserably and were returned to their poor little camps. They were loved and respected by the lebanese state and people before they decided to backstabb us. We loved them so much we let them carry woepens and have full control of their camps. Palestinians had so much freedom in lebanon that they pretty much did anything they want and didnt respect the lebanese laws and sovreignety. When we decided to defend our country, everbody got mad at us and were accusing us of zionists and heartless human being. Now that the palestinians lost the war and that the PLO was expulsed from lebanon, palestinians start to play the victims and accuse the lebanese of mistreating them. Well maybe if you didn't destroy the country that welcomed you with open arms we would treat a bit better I dont know. +cecil123 we are the canaanes/ Phoenicians from Greece moved to that land around the same time when Greeks started expanding throughout the Mediterranean. this is proven just by looking at our cuisine. If you want to compare it to the Arabian cuisine you'll find it to be very different. We make pita, stuffed veggies, lamb, baklava etc. we say opa!, Alaopa, kataif, which are all Greek. We also believe that we are mixed with people from France and Italy. The region I'm from is called latrun and most people from there are fair skin with colored eyes which are characteristics of European descendants. I do also believe that we were Jews at some point. I have a link to prove this. Just watch the similarities of the people in the video.

Seeing all the comments, I would like to show you the mentality from the Lebanese perspective, especially the Christian side which is often forgotten (yes, Lebanon is not totally a Muslim and an Arab country ; I consider myself with Phoenician ancestry so not Arab) : We are supposed to accept that the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organisation) was created on our own land, that they were the ones who gathered weapons and used them in order to threat (my) people for different reasons : to pay for their newspaper by force, or to use ransom by capturing Lebanese citizens. And these people were the elder ones you see on this video I presume. My grandparents and their siblings had to hide themselves from the Palestinians IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY, Lebanon. If they refused to pay money to the Palestinians, people had either to die (more likely if you were Christian) or to stand under the sun for hours or even to be captured (and some people were never seen). The PLO also wanted to capture/kill the heads of the national army/police which my granduncle was part of. He had to switch his name in order to stay alive. Because the Christian "clans"/communities did not accept the situations, they turned against the Palestinians and so the Muslim Lebanese people as well. Some said that the Palestinians wanted to invade us and make Lebanon their second Palestine in order to settle somewhere else and push themselves through. See the Palestinians in this video, if I am being honest, they always have Palestinian flags (which I totally understand although it is the truth). This made begin the 15-year civil war in Lebanon, it ruined Lebanon and we still suffer from it. Knowing the all other parties in the region apply continuous pressure on Lebanon to become a puppet for different political reasons, and that corruption is always present everywhere. If you are not Lebanese and you never ever have lived there, then I understand totally that a lot of people hate the mentality, but don't forget that there is a loooooonnnng story behind every law/reasoning/mentality from every side in the region. Lebanese don't have money too : most of the Lebanese have a low salary and it becomes worse now because of the total crisis the Lebanese people are living right now. Lebanese struggle to buy bread now and parts of the foreign aid that are dedicated for the Lebanese are stolen buy the Syrian and Palestinian refugees... I understand that because everyone suffers, but the latter have already aids coming for them in their camps... And the lawyers that you saw may be harsh on them but I think honest : Lebanon does not want the Palestinians to stay permanently in the country but go in the West Bank with their people, the same applies to the Syrian refugees to Syria. In conclusion, because the Lebanese government - although I hate it for its lack of open mindedness (that is why I understand all the comments) - cannot already take care of its own people, how can it take care of Palestinians. They already have the West Bank where they can have a better life (and Gaza, to be totally politically correct) and live with their people/families. Thank you for your understanding, especially if you read my text until the end :) If you know other details I may don't know, please write it below :)

@@khadershashaa1526 no its the truth, many Palestinian people do not want to face the fact that they are living on foreign land. Yet they still are taking the jobs of the Lebanese and complaining that they are not getting anything. They’re even living under the names of the Lebanese people when they could live under their own names since it wasnt against their own laws to begin with. If they wish to live together in peace then they should be honest people.

See my mindset has always been that Lebanon had no issue with Palestinians living peacefully in Lebanon. The problem is that Israel has come in on multiple occasions and massacred innocent Palestinians (Sabra and Shatila, for instance), which only fuels Hamas’ recruitment. The other key problem is Syria and its counterpart, Hezbollah, attempting to place Lebanon under Syrian rule. The Syrians hate Israel, but not because they stand in solidarity with Palestinians. The Syrians want to eliminate both the Israelis and the Palestinians and would if they could. Their grip on Lebanon’s government is largely why Lebanon is in its current state.

Europe is going through this now. When a country takes you in, you would do well to show them some respect and not make things worse for that country. People are always talking about justice for those that migrate, but no one ever speaks about justice for the host countries, where their citizens often suffer also.

So Lebannon is an apartheid state!!! Arabs living in Israel are the only arabs with electricity, water, healthcare 24/7 and unemployment benefits. By the way, Palestinians were invented in 1964 in East Jerusalem, at the time occupied by the Jordanians. Please correct guest statements to reflect this.

So the family at about 17:00 had a business and probably their house as a security. The business failed and the house was in danger, so they committed a fraud to have the house secured and now complain about the guy helping them in their fraud for committing a fraud on them? Pretty rich.
