Isn't “above the fold” UI design dead? (Tuesdays with Joe, Episode 02)

Ғылым және технология

Don’t people scroll automatically?
And given that, isn’t this idea of "designing for the fold” - the bottom edge of the device/browser’s screen - obsolete? Irrelevant in the age of mobile devices?
Not so fast. Look, the old arguments about getting every shred of content above the fold aren’t applicable - I’ll give you that. The mass adoption of social media and the “ infinite scroll” technique most apps use have created a habitual, instinctive response to scroll to view more content.
But the bottom of the browser still plays a very critical role in whether or not people engage with the content that sits below it. Even in those situations where we scroll without ever thinking about it.
The fold absolutely matters in terms of how you design the screen - but not in the way you might think.
Check out this latest edition of Tuesdays with Joe to find out why.

Know your user! I really resisted designing for a fixed height screen, the future was clearly an infinitely scrolling design. Then, I watched people work, listened to industry specific experts, and did my own reading and research. Turns out, there is a need for rapid data entry systems a.k.a. 10-key that relies on users keeping their fingers on the keyboard and navigating through complex forms using tabs. Now, I will admit, this is a very specific and specialized industry (medical billing and insurance forms) and you need to be very careful when to apply these design patterns, but above the fold is not dead. Here is a link to a great summary of 10-key design for web: www.tabasconsulting.com/portfolio/designing-a-web-interface-for-10-key-data-entry-users/

Bryan, your first three words couldn't possibly be MORE true! Context of use, as you explain so very well here, is everything when it comes to developing UI design and interactive functionality that deliver great UX.
