Islam Makhachev: Beating Dan Hooker puts me close to title fight | UFC 267 | ESPN MMA

Спорт

ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto sits down with Islam Makhachev at UFC 267 Media Day to discuss why he was initially hesitant to be fighting so soon since his last bout. Makhachev describes his reaction to Rafael dos Anjos withdrawing from the event and why he isn’t interested in a future bout against Tony Ferguson. Islam also breaks down his opponent, Dan Hooker, and what a win would mean for his chances of a lightweight title fight next.

Completely agree with everyone in the comments complimenting the progression in his English... well done to Islam! Of course they dont have to learn english but its always appreciated by us english speaking natives. I always feel really appreciative when someone tries to learn our language in order to be able to talk to the media and the fans. Much love to Islam.

I realized south American fighters in general are most lazy when it comes to learning English and don't care about using it to promote themselves, so I am thankful for fighters like Islam, khabib etc who realise the importance of being able to speak it. Beneil dominated the former mandatory challenger Ferguson so it would be unfair for Islam to get a shot before him but can't ignore Islam dominate till now, especially if he adds hooker to the list. So the winner of this fight should get a title shot. Chandler and Gaethje just both had a shot not really fair for them to have such a strong position when they just lost.

@@wjennin1 I don't think chandler or gathje deserve another chance regardless of who wins that fight. Daruish and Islam had to go on a winning streak just to get noticed (especially daruish). Chandler got title shot based of popularity and should be made to wait, two fights and a title shot is a joke. Gaethje hasn't fought since he lost to khabib and should be made to win atleast another big fight or two before getting another shot. In my eyes it's out of daruish, Islam and Hooker. Winner tomorrow faces dariush for 1# contender, winner of that should get a title shot straight away. No need to fight Gaethje or chandler as they are not deserving of a title shot again, atleast not yet.

@@JM-bx2vg In principle I agree with you, but UFC title fights are as much about selling ppv buys as they are who has fully earned the right to fight in them. Chandler and Gathje are fun fighters to watch. Chandler is a past Bellator champ and Gathje is a past interim champ who fought Khabib. They aren't climbing the ladder anymore. They're just trying to not fall off of it. Dariush and Islam are still climbing. Whether that's right or wrong is up to the person looking at it.

@@wjennin1 Exactly its about selling ppv and islam has a name now, is being backed by one of the most popular ufc starts right now, and dana is behind him as he knows islam name will hold if he keeps winning. Once he beats daruish (if he does) he will get a title shot for sure no reason for dana not too. Chandler/gathje are not being talked about as much as islam, so he will get to skip past them as dana wouldn't even wanna risk it before getting him a title shot.

Hooker has 4 good RDS in him so I don't think either of them will slow down, but then again Islam pushes a pace Dan won't like, but I say that because of the wrestling. Dan likes high pace fights, when he is comfortable in them, basically when he is fighting someone with a similar fighting style like poirier but when that pressure is a heavy mix of wrestling (much more energy draining than striking) that he's not going to like. I think Islam will beat him on points tbh. Dan will be tough to finish, his ju jitsu is good and he has heart so will be very hard for Islam to finish. Dominance to points victory

His next opponent easily his toughest though, daruish can actually be a problem to him in all parts of the game. Daruish has very high levels of jiu jitsu/wrestling and has more power on the feet/a much better chin. If Islam can beat him he will prove he atleast deserves to be the next guy to face Olivera after gathje, cause gathje 100% losing to charles, unless he koes him clean but I doubt that. I reckon Islam does win this one on points, daruish is levels above hooker and everyone else islam has faced on the ground, I don't see islam finishing him on the ground and on the feet islam chin will put him in danger against daruish.

I like how he thinks realistically about the title picture. He made some good point there, if Chandler wins then they wouldn't put him in a title fight straight away (especially if Oliveira is still champ) and Islam is likely to get the shot first. But if Gaethje wins then he probably gets the shot first since he hasn't lost to anyone else at the top of the division in a while (Khabib retired and Poirier rematch would make sense since he's a lot better now)
