Islam in Africa - History Of Africa with Zeinab Badawi [Episode 9]

In this episode Zeinab Badawi travels to several countries and looks at the early spread of Islam in Africa and how many Africans practise to this day a mystic, Sufi form of the religion.
She shows how not only Islam but Arab culture came to influence a large part of the continent, particularly in the north.
And she charts the rise of the powerful Islamic dynasties of North Africa, that built magnificent monuments, mosques and empires, including a part of southern Europe and who helped determine the path of this part of the continent.

Until today Christianity has a strong hold of power in the country but the Muslim population of country is very big although they do not have much political power. Neighboring country Somalia became Muslim around the same time making both the Muslims in Ethiopia and Somalia the first people in Africa accepting Islam. Somalia has 100% Sunni Muslim population.

This documentary approaches the topic as if Arabs brought Islam into Africa centuries later, but in East Africa, Islam reached when Muslim followers were as few as hundreds. Arabs then came centuries later when many were already Muslims in East Africa. In East Africa, our forefathers accepted Islam on their own terms. East Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti deserved better mention in this so called "Islam in Africa".

@@giantlion8109 That would be true if you are only talking about color of the people who brought Islam to Africa, but in East Africa some people were Muslims when some Arabs were pagans. So my point is: The video suggests Arab merchants brought Islam from the north. In North of Africa people became Muslims few centuries later after Islam reached East Africa. So, some people may think that Syria, Lebanon, Jordan etc were Muslims before Africa. So, forget about the color of the people and just concentrate exactly when Islam reached to Africa.

@Shooting Star brother you are wrong. For a start, Christians and Jews are Not unbelievers as per Islamic teachings. We are all believers of God/ Allah Almighty. Secondly, In Islam unbelievers usually refer to atheists, Pagans and Polytheists, not Christians amd Jews. Regardless, whether your are believerbor not Islam teachs us to affirm our common brotherhood under Humanity. Al people regardless of race and religion are from Adam and Eve. Islam teaches us to be kind, just, ans merciful to all people. Thats the reality. Don't judge Islamic religion by what MUSLIMS do. Wether Somalis, Arabs, Asians, Muslims are just like others in that theres the good and bad amongst us. Am a Somali- Australian. And As God is my witness I had just come home from an 10 hour shift at work (constructions) amd stil wearing work clothes as I write this reply to you. Hey what do you think about what Zeinab said? From what I know about our history Islam first began in East Africa. In Ethiopia of today to be exact. And that's as a result of the Arabs migration to Al Habasha after they were being pursued by the non muslim Arabs. From what I heard Somalia was one of the first countries to become Muslim even before the people of Makkah accepted Islam. Thinking about it now it completely makes sense cause if you think about how can they get to Ethiopia without passing Somalia? So it'd make sense for Somalia to be one of the first countries to accept Islam.

I am also grateful to Zeinab Badawi who disclosed a secret about Fatamides. I have absolutely no idea that the Fatamides were Shiites and they constructed great mosques which at present are under Sunni control. The division between Muslims as a Sunni and Shia is the most unfortunate aspect of Islam. Islam is the simple, graceful, practical, and easily understandable religion in the world. EQUALITY is the hallmark of Islam. Once again I am grateful to BBC the services which are/were rendered in the shape of this documentary.

The name is a reminder for the few sensible people who still think not zombies who don't. Allah was just the alter ego of Muhammad to get away with all sorts of perverted acts of his. Hadith حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ تَزَوَّجَ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ عَائِشَةَ وَهِيَ بِنْتُ سَبْعٍ وَبَنَى بِهَا وَهِيَ بِنْتُ تِسْعٍ وَتُوُفِّيَ عَنْهَا وَهِيَ بِنْتُ ثَمَانِي عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً ‏.‏ It was narrated that: Abdullah said: "The Prophet married Aishah when she was seven years old, and consummated the marriage with her when she was nine, and he passed away when she was eighteen." Pervert Pedophile Prophet hahaha it’s always the same argument by sad low lives like u, let me drop some knowledge on your dumbass, They point out that, in seventh-century Arabia, adulthood was defined as the onset of puberty. (This much is true, and was also the case in Europe: five centuries after Muhammad's marriage to Aisha, 33-year-old King John of England married 12-year-old Isabella of Angoulême.) Interestingly, of the many criticisms of Muhammad made at the time by his opponents, none focused on Aisha's age at marriage.According to this perspective, Aisha may have been young, but she was not younger than was the norm at the time. Other Muslims doubt the very idea that Aisha was six at the time of marriage, referring to historians who have questioned the reliability of Aisha's age as given in the saying. In a society without a birth registry and where people did not celebrate birthdays, most people estimated their own age and that of others. Aisha would have been no different. What's more, Aisha had already been engaged to someone else before she married Muhammad, suggesting she had already been mature enough by the standards of her society to consider marriage for a while. It seems difficult to reconcile this with her being six.In addition, some modern Muslim scholars have more recently cast doubt on the veracity of the saying, or hadith, used to assert Aisha's young age. In Islam, the hadith literature (sayings of the prophet) is considered secondary to the Qur'an. While the Qur'an is considered to be the verbatim word of God, the hadiths were transmitted over time through a rigorous but not infallible methodology. Taking all known accounts and records of Aisha's age at marriage, estimates of her age range from nine to 19. and if it was true that he was a pedophile wouldn’t he have only married a bunch of young girls? instead of women? y’all islamophobes only like to focus on aisha and pick on her and start making really offensive claims and being disrespectful and thinks it’s freedom of speech, get a grip and get a life instead of hating on a the best walking man on earth according to many universities and scholars bc u seem sad asf

@19th October , You bring up very good points. Personally, after spending hundreds and hundreds of hours researching World History and African History, in particular, I've reached an impasse and a point of neutrality. Throughout mankind's history, one group of people have always conquered another group or groups of people to "expand the Empire," for wealth creation, etc. And when people were conquered, they had no choice but to assimilate to the dominant culture or be killed for their resistance. The language we're communicating in, English, is another example (in addition to your example on Arabic). Unfortunately, it's not true that ALL African ethnic groups (there are more than 3,000 of them) lived peacefully either. Before European Colonialism in Africa (late 19th Century), there was no collective identity among the indigenous groups in Africa of being "Black" or "African" for that matter. Each ethnic group identified themselves by their own ethnicity (this is where we get so-called "tribalism"), had their own kingdoms, history, culture, customs, etc. In other words, there was no unified consensus of being "African" or "Black" as it is today. These are relatively new identities in Africa. Africans didn't use racial identifiers such as "Black," "White," "Brown," etc. to describe other human beings. These racial categories were invented by racist European scientists and propagated by European elites, clergy, and nobility to champion their goals of world supremacy which resulted in the subjugation of other people or "savages" as Europeans would call them. But wars between ethnic groups in Africa also occurred for many of the same reasons wars occurred in other places in the world. Only difference is that the wars and imperialistic ideals didn't extend beyond the African continent as it did in Europe.

They do worth coverage in details, however she just covered the topic on North Africa!! .I don't know if she is biased to Arabs??.what shocked me even more is that it was sponsered and funded by UNESCO !! it had to be neutral and fair, because this is "History" not politics! Jimmy Crack Corn in the early days of Islam the prophet feared for the lives of his companions and told them to migrate to Abyssinia (modern day Ethiopia Eritrea Somalia) first black person to embrace Islam was Bilal from Abysinia. In northern Somalia there is a mosque with two Qiblas one facing Jerusalem and one face makkah. Prophet Mohamed was praying towards Jerusalem when he was in Madinah. So that tells you East Africa was more connected to Hijaz (today Saudi Arabia). 1400 years ago maybe Saudi Arabia was part of Africa and North Africa was part of Europe who knows but one thing without a doubt is that North Africans embraced Islam way after the West Africans. could someone please tell this lady she got it all wrong

Jimmy Crack Corn Arab Bedouins used to bury their daughters alive before Islam it’s called the era of Jahilia or Ignorance they were pagans but Islam uplifted women and gave them rights and through Islam Arabs became civilized and gave birth to the golden age of Islam civilization when the rest of Europe was in dark ages. The reason I mentioned Bilal it’s because he’s a historic figure and a good example of what Islam is. he was a slave at the time and he chose Islam against all odds, he was tortured by his captors because of what he chose but instead he kept his religion. Racism has no place in Islam just because some few ignorant Arabs are racist doesn’t mean in any form or shape they represent islam whatsoever
