Isiah Thomas (26 Points, 13 Assists) Snatches First Place from Bulls

Спорт

January 23, 1990 - At the forefront of a stretch in which the Pistons won 25 of 26 games, Isiah Thomas was the difference maker in a 107-95 win over the Chicago Bulls, playing 41 minutes and finishing with 26 points (10-of-19 shooting) and 13 assists. The win nudged the Pistons past the Bulls for first place in the Central Division, a lead for which they'd never relinquish. Michael Jordan led the Bulls with 32 points but shot just 11-of-31 from the field, including 4-of-18 in the second half.
The Pistons took four out of five regular season matchups with the Chicago Bulls during the 1989-90 campaign (with Thomas averaging 20.4 points and 9.4 assists in those matchups). The Bulls would not go quietly, however, pushing the Pistons to seven games in the 1990 Eastern Conference Finals. The Pistons went on to clinch their third consecutive Finals berth on the heels of Thomas' 21-point, 8-rebound, 11-assist performance in Game 7 against Chicago.
Thomas went on to earn Finals MVP honors as the Pistons brought home their second consecutive NBA title. In a five-game series against the Portland Trail Blazers, Thomas averaged 27.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 7 assists while shooting 68.8 percent from three (11-for-16).

one of the last victories of the Pistons in Chicago before the rest of the Bulls stopped being afraid of dangerous fouls and started playing in the same style against Detroit. then Pistons fans came up with a fairy tale that the Pistons, who were in their prime, were already old and injured and the referees were helping the Bulls. the truth is that the bulls simply took it to the next level and crushed the pistons with their own weapons.

@@adamullmann626they were not old, but injured. Their post January record was 17-19 and their leading scorers were Vinnie Johnson and Mark Aguirre in that series. The bulls bench definitely got better hence the sweep. Reffing was in favor of the bulls for games 2-4 but game 1 was even. The point is that the bulls got the easy way out in 1991 and should've had a hard 6-7 game series like After losing parts of the team, the pistons almost beat the Knicks who took the bulls to 7 the next year. They didn't even make the playoffs two years later.

People should watch. This is the truth. This is normal business between the Pistons and the Bulls. Hardly a rivalry.

It was more "Jordan vs. The Pistons", which probably started in 1987. He had some big games against them that year. The teams split the regular season series (3 - 3) and the Bulls managed to win a game in Detroit. March 4th. Silverdome crowd. Jordan scores 61. Bulls win in overtime. The next season (April 3rd, 1988), he scores 59 against them, again at the Silverdome. Nationally televised. Bulls win. Not a rivalry but Jordan was largely responsible for keeping some games close and for Chicago's wins from '87 - '89.

The story wasn't that the two teams were equal. So if that is your definition then, no, it wasn't a rivalry for most of the time. The story is the Bulls kept getting better while the Pistons were holding them off. In 1988, the Pistons were much better. In 1989, they were better. In 1990, they were just a little better. By 1991, they were overtaken.

@@TayGee-mh8eo The story, back then and for many years afterward, was that it was a "rivalry". What the OP is choosing to point out is that Detroit dominated Chicago from 1988 until 1991, especially for games played in Detroit. The Pistons weren't simply better or a littler better in '89 and '90. They were considerably better. It's oversimplifying to state that they were overtaken in 1991. Chicago got better but Detroit's injuries and mileage caught up with them and the amending of the flagrant foul rule also helped.
