Isamu Noguchi at the Barbican Art Gallery

In this large, comprehensive exhibition, we learn how Isamu Noguchi worked across multiple disciplines such as sculpture, landscape design, furniture, lighting and theatre design working with a diverse range of materials and techniques. Influenced by both human cultures across the world, especially Japan and the United States, Noguchi was an artist who sought to synthesize art with design, so that traditional definitions of fine art in the West were broken down. He proposed an art that related to space and the body, moving beyond the static object on a plinth. Highly prodigious and experimental, Noguchi has been largely neglected outside his native US but his exhibition explains why he played such an influential role in the mid-20th century and how he continued to evolve as an artist and designer.
