Many years ago, when I wanted to do the OWD course on Jamaica, the guys at the dive shop were studying the effects of cannabis on scuba diving. 🚬😉 For some reason, I chose not to interrupt their scientific efforts and went on to another dive school...

Hi! I have trying to find out what hapened to xdeep regulator and why it never got released. Any news about it??

I’ve been in contact with xdeep about this. The regs are fully tested and ready for release. They are holding off due to covid. The factory is based in Italy. Their view is, if they release the regs and get loads of orders, if the factory location goes into lockdown, they won’t be able to fulfil the orders. So until there is more certainty, they don’t want to release something they can’t make. But I do have the RRP of the sets (without hoses) Single cylinder (1 x first stage, 2 x second stage) - €580 Twin cylinder (2 x first stage, 2 x second stage) - €840 1st stage alone - €260 2nd stage alone - €160. Hope this helps

I’ve recently purchased the DGX XTRA reg setup. Long hose primary donate and 80” hose. Taking it to a pool tomorrow to test out and then it’s going to the Hoover dam for a 3 dive trial in April. I’ll let ya know how it performs. I did a Hollis backplate and then pieces together the rest of the kit from their website. Harness, D-ring etc. DGX also offers servicing and sells the service kits for their own regulators. So you can mail it to them, or just buy a kit and go for it. Update after the pool dive. 78 minutes at 15 feet average depth. It worked great...like mark said there’s really no bad regs. It delivered more air than I wanted with the knob cracked wide open. I’d say buy it. Decent little kit

#askmark What things should you bring with you on a boat? Obviously all your diving gear, but what else? How many towels, types/materials of clothes, etc.? Also, if you are doing multiple dives a day, do you typically stay in your wetsuit, wear it half on/off, or take it all the way off?

A few thoughts: There are two main types of dive boat to consider. Live aboards and day boats, which have slightly different requirements. There's very little room on boats, so keep what you bring to a minimum. I generally bring two bags on day boats, my dive bag which stays at my station and a small water proof/water resistant bag for my wallet, wind breaker, phone, water bottle etc which goes up the front (most boats have a "dry area" that gets less wet). Live aboards often have limited fresh water, so don't expect to be cleaning clothes (and, sometimes, gear) on the boat. Towels are almost always provided, I carry one small quick dry towel on live aboards but that's mostly because it's part of my standard travel luggage. I generally don't carry a towel on a day boat. The elemental issues on the boat are mostly sun and wind. For live aboards, generally pack minimal amounts of light weight clothing (I prefer long sleeve for sun protection) and a windbreaker, hoodie or similar for evenings or if I'm feeling cold after a dive. I do know some people who only pack bathers and a hoodie (they want to tan between dives and are happy wearing the clothes they walked onto the boat with when necessary). For day boats, the wind breaker/hoodie should be all you need. I always carry a mylar safety blanket just in case as they're small and it's better than someone on the boat getting hypothermia. Speaking of hypothermia... If you are cold after a dive, get the wetsuit off (at least off your core) and get something warm & dry over your top. A hoodie or windbreaker of some sort is generally preferred. Also consider finding (or bringing) someone to hug as body heat is a great way to stay warm. For day boats, I tend to strip down to my waist (and often wear a two piece so that I can just take the top off, or at least unzip it). If it's a mild day and/or there's a short surface interval, I'll often leave it on. If it's hot, strip the top of your wetsuit as soon as you feel sweaty (or as soon as you're out of the water). It's very easy to cook in a wetsuit on a hot day, especially if the boat has minimal sun protection. On liveaboards, there's places to hang wetsuits so I usually fully strip and hang my gear as soon as I've finished dealing with my gear. Sunscreen: please make sure it's reef safe (zinc based). Generally, any sunscreen that has an ingredient starting with oxy- or octi- should be avoided. Where possible, long sleeves and a hat are preferred as that reduces the potentially toxic chemicals going into the ecosystem. Water: water should be provided, but it's always good to bring your own drinking vessel. Always drink water between dives as getting dehydrated is commonly associated with getting bent. Backup gear: there is no shop at sea, so make sure you bring a save a dive kit along with spares of anything you'd be upset to be missing. How much and what you pack is really personal choice, I tend to pack enough to get me through most failures but I know others who don't pack any spares and just switch to relaxation mode if they can't dive. For live aboards, sometimes power generation can be a problem on smaller boats, so batteries are something I specifically recommend. Also check with the live aboard to see if they require using a dive computer; if so it's best to bring a spare as having a failure on day one of a 7 or 14 day trip is going to make you really unhappy. If not, make sure you've refreshed your slate based dive planning skills before hand, just in case. A lot of dive problems can be solved by carrying: allen keys, adjustable spanner, o-rings, zip ties, a mask strap and hair ties (even if you don't have long hair, chances are someone on the boat does and they're generally useful). I also tend to bring a DIN to A clamp adapter with me some operators don't have one or the other and sometimes I forget to ask before hand, so it's easier to just have it on me. Surprisingly often overlooked, but a DSMB and reel should always be part of your dive gear. This is doubly true on boats as you want to be able to be found if you surface away from the boat and can't make it back under your own power.

#ASK MARK. Random question, but for Shaun (so he does not feel left out, lol). What are your opinions on "Hiking Sandals"? I love them, grippy and air to the feet, but my partner, Michael, hates them and thinks they are the devil (especially when combined with socks). Just wanted to ask your opinion, as a hiker. If Mark has an opinion on them too, great to hear his side as well. Thank you very much for your time 😊. X

If you are testing your gear prior to diving, a few breaths or quick squirt into the drysuit or BC it will not cause any issues. You don't need anyone close to you because you should do this as soon as your gear is assembled, not when you're wearing it and about to jump in! Shaun only likes to long walks on the beach and think about the informative videos on topics like bolt snaps and cylinders that Mark comes up with which he will have to edit. Everything else, Mark does :) ( All joking aside. Shaun is not a diver and most of his experience for diving and dive gear comes from being apart of this channel over the years. Mark however use to be an SCUBA instructor and worked in the industry etc..)
