Is Your Child Ready For A Puppy? | Uncle Stonnie's Pro Tips On How To Make That Decision

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today Uncle Stonnie is answering the question, Is My Child Ready For Their Very Own Puppy? In this video we provide some awesome pro tips and strategies for helping families evaluate and prepare children for puppy raising responsibilities!
A key, and often overlooked, question in the dog and puppy training world is whether or not a family is actually ready to bring a puppy into their lives. Raising, training, and caring for a puppy is a very labor intensive process and all too often the labor ends up being distributed in a non equitable manner. When the labor isn't fairly allocated the main caregiver often gets overwhelmed and isn't able to care for the puppy in an appropriate manner. Puppies all too often end up being relegated to the back yard, crate, or basement which results in a whole host of future behavioral issues.
This video is intended to provide families with a simple set of principles that will help determine if, and when, it's the right time to welcome a new puppy into one's family!
We hope you guys enjoy!

Uncle Stonnie you're the best dad in the world you give you're daughter a chance that no other parents don't give. And you make her responsible for her choice. This is life time lesson 🤠

My family always watches your videos. My 8 year old daughter taught our 1 year old Malinois how to sit pretty and take treats gently. My wife and I had trained him religiously from the day we got him but couldn’t get those two things. One day she surprised us with what she had been practicing. 😃 Now he is her shadow when we go out.

This is the best video!! My daughter didn’t want a dog but she did want a pet. So since we already had dogs she had to show she could care for them and then do research on the pet she wanted. Now she has a Pac-Man frog lol

Even if your family can’t “own” a dog (e.g. lots of travel, someone with allergies, etc.) finding someone who needs help with their dog is the absolute best thing for everyone. Growing-up I had a “before and after school” dog that would come right to our door like clockwork. Though we didn’t “officially” own that dog, he was just as mine as the neighbor’s. 🥰

Stonnie-You are such a good dad. Making kids responsible for their dogs/pets is a great thing but it takes time, motivation, patience, and realizing that the parents will be doing A LOT to help that child. Great educational lesson for parents and prospective puppy owners!

I wish all parents were like you. You're a good father, teaching your kids valuable lessons and responsibility. Unfortunately most parents these days don't do that and just get whatever the kids wants. And like you said, the mom is the one having to take care of the dog since a lot of kids lose interest in their dog because the dog is either too much work or the kid would rather be doing something else. Kids, and a lot of adults, just want to take the dog off the shelf and put it back when they're done, and that's not how pet ownership works. Dogs are a lot of work, I wish more people realized that before getting a dog, especially a breed that is high drive, high energy, and high maintenance.

Brilliant strategy for the "neighbor helping neighbor" with the dog responsibility. Indeed a win win. In fact, it is a great thing to do even without auditioning for getting a dog. As I live in a rural area, most dogs have plenty of outdoor area--a luxury compared to urban owners.

I love animals but grew up without any (because my parents were allergic and also did not like animals). Consequently, once I was an adult with my own home, I made up for my childhood, animal deficit. My kids each got a parakeet at age 5 and then many little parrots, fish and two dogs plus a number of foster dogs. And, yes, Stonnie, mom ends up taking care of the pets. I knew that and gladly took care of the menagerie.

Hi Stonnie. Thank you for the great videos. They have helped make me a better dog owner. I purchased an 8 wk old yellow lab from a breeder a few days ago. It had a 1 inch healing laceration on its shoulder. The breeder told us he injured it when he got stuck under a fence. However, when I got the puppy home, and introduced it to my black lab (who just happened to be barking at something else) and Chihuaha, it howled, peed, and cowered in fear. It was obvious by it's reaction that the laceration was caused by a bite from another dog. Upon closer inspection, we found small round scabs near the laceration that were consistent with teeth marks. We gave it extra love, tried to make him feel safe, and reintroduced it to our dogs later. Now he and the black lab are best buddies and he loves "harassing" the Chihuaha by following him around. I'm worried about how he will react to meeting other dogs in the future. I don't want him to be fearful and defensive when he meets new dogs. I was wondering how you would mitigate a potential problem like this. Take care, and thanks again!

Just an anecdote- but our Springer/mix puppy was trained and raised by their whole family- especially their younger daughter. This pup is so tolerant of everything and loves children. Of course the parents took primary control of socializing the pups, but I do think the fact our dog was trained by a whole family has really helped in her development.

@@StonnieDennis Lots of reasons. Kid quits nagging for pet...or maybe it back fires and they want to "rescue" them all. Volunteering is good on the resume and is the right thing to do. One of the nation's top holistic vets, Karen Becker, started out as a shelter volunteer. And they can see first hand why taking on a pet is a responsibility not to be taken lightly. I'm not a fan of shelters because most are just feel good pet shops, however some are legit. Your kids will probably take over the family business, most families don't have your situation.
