Post review we’ve only played it once and ultimately felt like it’s just not the extra complexity overhead and needing to relearn every time we play it how Turmoil works. It does what it does well and it cranks up the complexity if that’s what people want, but it just doesn’t do it for me.

It is the most complex expansion, but I find it's my favorite (or that is a lie, Preludes is my favorite... but I basically think of that as in the base game, as even when I teach Terraforming Mars, I include it). The other expansions felt so... bolted on in comparison. It's a game of Terraforming Mars, not Venus (with cards that only work well with cards from that expansion) or outer mining colonies. They felt like distractions, and personally if they were in the game or not... meh. I didn't really care. But Turmoil made Mars feel bigger in it's own world. Humanity wasn't just putting out a little expedition (like the others) that would occasionally send some recourses. No, this is a major human endeavor because Government is here! Also the other expansions were low interaction. You either randomly got the card for Venus or not (it's not a choice or competition), there as a little for colonies, but even then. Usually you don't all need the same one. But Turmoil had stakes, and it effected everyone. You care about what is happening there. I get it's not for everyone, and it does add a solid chunk of rules. Unlike preludes, I'm not always going to play it. But I will say, it's the best of the expansions for Terraforming Mars (I cheat again!).
