My hat 🎩 goes off to you for opening up about your struggles, Guy. As someone for whom neurodivergence runs in their immediate family (including myself), it’s hard to be kind to oneself. One gives grace and forgiveness to everyone else, but somehow there isn’t any left over to give to oneself. From a personal perspective, when I get into a hobby or something in particular, I study it intensively, try everything out, and often go overboard. That often leads to burnout and a purge of items, but eventually it settles itself into a decent medium, and that hobby or interest becomes another piece in my personal mosaic of interests. What’s important is that we look for hobbies to enrich ourselves and meet new people to share our interests with. I’m not a drinker, so commingling around alcohol is off the table, and thus I must be more intentional with how I connect with others. Yes it can be hard to take that first step to meet others out of fear of social rejection or being judged, but the payoffs are so much richer than meeting people at the bar. If any of y’all are finding collecting items no longer fulfilling, then I recommend switching to something that stimulates you intellectually, such as learning a new language. In fact, I’d say playing an instrument, creative writing and learning a language are three of the most fulfilling hobbies out there.

I’m 12 years sober and I realised that I needed healthy I interests as I tend to get a bit obsessed. Golf has filled a big hole and to some extent watches are another thing. Connecting with people along the way has added value to these interests and helped me to socialise with others. I wouldn’t change a thing. These small interactions and messages of support can mean the world to folks, providing a feeling of connection or being understood. I am sorry for your family tragedies. I think collectors probably often have obsessional behavior . It really is irrational to obsess on your automatic watch to run seconds fast or slow or the colour of the tip of a second hand or indeed the decoration of movement you can’t see . For 15 years I was immersed spending a whole lot of money it changed around 6 months or so now I have no desire to buy at all I just no longer see the value in high end watches and they leave me cold . I have my big hitters in the bank and really dont care they will be sold off at some point . I still wear a watch but it’s a tool , saves me going into my pocket to check my phone . I think for the most part if you have an obsessional behavior watch collecting is probably not a great idea it really does feed the monster .

Hi, Guy...First and foremost, keep on keeping on! Thank you for being yet another voice bringing up the serious issue of mental health that exists here and around the world, an issue that is made all the more serious by the lack of resources needed to fight this very real and often deadly illness. Your voice helps break down the ignorance around this subject and hopefully will get others with mental illness to seek help. Thank you for your courage and honesty, and condolences on your family's loses and struggles. John Mayer once pointed to his pile of watches and said - That’s all the drugs I’ve never done. Things could be a lot worse. So as long as it doesn’t eat into your personal finance, you do you. That’s pretty much all that has to be said.
Thank you for speaking about this Guy. I really respect and appreciate you. We all have our demons, and far too many people are worried that they will be judged or abandoned. True friends and decent people will only ever respect you if you share your mind and your heart. Watches help us obsess about something that is genuinely interesting, beautiful and fun to play with, but yes, many of us including me, have our internal battles.... Like you said, ask for help if it gets really bad. And don't buy a Moonswatch. It will only make things worse 😊

I'm no expert but do have 6 decades behind me already so I do know a little about mental health issues, issues that also destroyed people in my inner circle. Just the mere fact that people collect things is an issue to me. At first it may all seem just harmless or too simple but it does take its toll after a while. At this time having had as many as 14 watches, I still don't know which is the one watch that I could not do without, not because I am undecided but rather cause I've been running kind of bored lately with the subject. So now I don't mind selling any of my precious pieces and rather enjoy the fact that the grey market is in shatters and that ADs will soon go back to caring for their customers, to remove the snobbery around watches, that day is fast approaching. cheers and get better!!!

Guy, sorry you have been suffering from Anxiety. I can relate and wish I knew you more to discuss coping with it. I am a bit nervous to say this but when I was 10, I could not concentrate in school they ran a bunch of tests and the results of an EEG showed I had an anxiety disorder and they had me on medication and my parents said I was like a zombie. Sadly both parents have passed away years ago. They also tested me at age 12 and it was worse. I did not know my father had trouble with anxiety until after he retired as he worked very long hours and a lot of it was physical as well as a lot of paperwork owning a business for 40 years. When he retired to take care of my mother who needed 24/7 care, he had found all kinds of issues from anxiety like trouble sleeping. He was put on medication trial and error until something worked. As far as watch collecting, as log as you can afford what you buy without going into debt or putting your family at risk from the purchase and there are people I know who put expensive watches on credit cards and not be able to afford them and have to sell them off. Sad really.

Dealing with people who don’t understand is ok. It’s dealing with people who don’t accept that is a problem. I don’t expect friends/family/etc to understand the scope of the problem but they have to accept that it’s a real issue and respect it - or they have no place in my life.
Thank you for sharing your experiences on this subject. It is a very important subject that is often swept under the table sort of speak. I have experienced many of the different experiences that you speak of. I do think that I hyper fixate on (watches). I think it is an area that can become an expression of some sort of a mental health problem, but in the sense of what other activities one could become involved in such as drug abuse, alcohol abuse, illegal activities. I think it might be one of the better ones if as you say, you could moderate it financially, and not get too over-the-top with regard to financials.

I have ADHD a symptom of which is severe impulsivity and reckless spending. Only a few months ago I owned a couple of Laco fliegers, but now, after subscribing to a number of well known KZread watch channels, I have fourteen watches from a variety of brands! When I see a watch I like the look of I just can’t seem to stop myself and no amount of self-talk stands in the way of me buying it. Plus, the amounts I’m spending on them are rising as I need a larger and larger hit to satisfy me. To begin with the watches I was buying were around the £150 mark, but my latest purchase came to £500 so I’m a bit worried about where this could end up.

I’m late to seeing this video but I definitely want to comment and say how touched I am by it.. Long time viewer/subscriber of your channel! And wow, small world - definitely was unaware of OCPD and man oh MAN do I have this and quite a severe case of it…. For example, I overly obsess about making sure my watches dont have imperfections such as text and Rolex crown properly lining up as it should.. not being slightly over to the left, or right - stuff like that drives me insane to the point of I cannot look past it, cannot enjoy said watch if it doesn’t line up correctly, and literally will (and have sold) certain watches because of it.. And its crazy because I absolutely know how ridiculous that is, but yet here we are.. Lucky for me, I am happy with the watches I have in my collection but it hasn’t been easy to get here.. a lot of watches sold that just drove me too crazy to keep.. and we all know Rolex has issues with QC but its my favorite brand so definitely sucks for me lol!! Also, I know how it feels to lose a parent to suicide - my dad shot himself 2 days after my 16th birthday (he suffered form a severe accuse depression episode) and it was something that destroyed me on a level I can’t describe. His untimely death has also ultimately destroyed my mother and I’s relationship as well due to the way that she blew through all of the money left behind so carelessly and failed to continue to raise me properly. Luckily I was able to raise myself and have become successful over the years. Anyway man this was a great video for me to watch!

Thank you so much for being so honest about your mental health struggles. I have to say that I admire you greatly for being extremely brave in opening up about stuff that a lot of us (me included) find it very hard to talk about, let alone post a video on. I can relate to many of the topics you've brought up- I myself went through a period of overspending and buying things really for the 'buzz' of opening up the package only to be looking for something else later that same day. I've found technology can be your best friend (like your smartwatch) or your worst enemy (me, late night buying unnecessary things on the internet), and you really have to take stock sometimes of what your good and bad habits are to be able to try to improve them, and consequently your mental health. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you and to also make sure that the core message of all this gets through to anyone struggling with these things, that, as you stated, if you find yourself in this situation- always remember..you are not alone. So sorry to hear that. Take care of yourself, physically and mentally.
I try to stay under 15 watches and if someone makes a good impression on me. I will tell them good job and give the a watch that I lost interest in with the hope that they will develop an interest in watches.
People nowadays always talking about mental health.. yaaaawn . It used to be much better before social media: the simple solution is real relationships

Any collection is a mental illness and try to full something in our life, but the most important its just to be conscient of that..im a virtual collector because i dont have money for concret my passion of collector,of course i have 30 casio, one rolex, one eterna, seiko ufo, orient and pagani homage, would like to collect patek, mkre rolex, ulysse nardin, audemars, blancpain ...but i cant, the good thing to be poor is that we have to sell a watch if we want to buy an other new, that make the ilness less deep, you have to loose a watch for having one and its not an insane acumulation of watch you never worn because we only have two hands...so even if you have budbet, think like a por guy,if you buy one, sell one who you consider not indispensable..help to cure...
Guy, I have watched this video several times, and I have come to the conclusion that I have so many problems that I am almost a mirror image of you, as it pertains to GAD. I would like to talk you personally about this and was wondering if you ever communicate directly with your viewers.

The Pontiff (ArchiLuxury) has stated his collection to be a mental illness at one time or another. Yet like being a psychopath, it is not illegal. 🤔
Women collect shoes, bags, dresses.. man watches and possibly cars. No big deal

Thanks for watching
Collecting is not a mental illness but hoarding is. 100 Rolex equals a collector/investor, 100 timex and the sorts equals hoarder.
