In this video, Page shares some of her bad experiences with Walmart as an RVer, the reasons why Walmart seems to be increasingly hostile to RVs, what she still finds Walmart useful for, and some great alternatives for quick overnights.

Unfortunately some people are or have using the Walmart lots as a trashcan.Truckers were the first to be banned for pee bottles, trash, and various waste products. Not personal, but nobody wants to have to pay to clean up someone else's mess.

In my small town Walmart allows overnight, but they require you to ask and give them your plate info. That way they know who to go after if they do stupid stuff like dumping grey water or whatever, Pretty sure they give your plate info to the cops also.

I totally feel all this. . I've had some good experiences So far With Michigan smaller cities. I loved having a snack and supply resource close . It saved me once tbh with a dead battery in the morning . But I foresaw problems in the future. In that some people could ruin it for the rest . I also feel you may get more problems in bigger cities. Near Detroit I didn't even want to try because the security was obviously Stout haha. Northern Michigan as of last year was perfect tho imo. Cheers . Love the channel/pages and hope you the best !

Thank you so much. Yeah, it does seem to be tougher to stay/park at Walmarts if they're near cities.

At the end of the day it is their property and they get to decide how that property is to be used. If someone just decide to over night in your driveway or property without permission what will your reaction be?

Oh definitely, it's their right to do so. I was more surprised by the disconnect between the advice I'd gotten from other RVers to use Walmart as a major resource and the reality that Walmart isn't as friendly anymore. So I made a video about it. Thanks for watching the video and thanks for commenting.

Bob Wells addresses this too on his latest video. My question is if someone is sleeping overnight in a car, van or rv in let's say Walmart parking lot, and gets the 'dreaded knock', why is it that people staying and causing all these problems night after night get to stay without the dreaded knock? Even if that one person (s) gives Walmart reason to make them leave after just one night, why is Walmart now saying they put up with the problems longer than one night? It's like any houseguest. Some get invited back and some don't. Parking lot security can make that distinction on a case by case basis. Making it across the board doesn't make any sense.

On the height restrictions at entry to parking lots: How do they get the deliveries to their own store? Those are done by semis. Doesn’t make sense.

  • @OurMovingCastle

    @OurMovingCastle

I had wondered about that myself... this store had a back road and area for trucks that are actively making deliveries -- which would mean that they have a place that RVs could theoretically sneak in too? Which seems to defeat the purpose of those bars.

Yes! Great tip. We use truck stops frequently on travel days. Haven't overnighted at one yet (though we haven't overnighted at a Walmart either to be fair),, but some folks swear by them. I really miss them when we're on a route that doesn't have them. So convenient.

Well, plus... it's weird when the business doesn't want to let RVs park to even shop when they have plenty of lot space (which these ones did) That's what really gets me as strange and absurd and an escalation. That is another layer of anti RVing which conflicts with Walmart's stated friendliness towards RVers.

Still it's very strange when they don't even want you to park in the lot for an hour or two during the day to shop (the stories I talk about in the video), when they have plenty of room in the lot. That seems like really odd behavior for a business.

I don't mind folks spending a night at Walmart, but when it becomes a mini tent city its an eye sore. Also I bet crime goes up with the homesteaders.

To be perfectly honest, I don't even need to OVERNIGHT at Walmart. (I mentioned a bunch of other good free/low cost overnight options later in the video, some of which we've used. And we mostly stay in campgrounds, which I sometimes review on this channel). I do think it would be nice if the ones with larger parking lots were always willing to let you park for 30 minutes to go shopping during the day on travel days. But some don't (and put up those gates in the video). And that's fine. There are always workarounds. It was just interesting to be given that advice before I RVed from other RVers that Walmart was really friendly to us/an easy option-- and to find when I got out there that it really does depend on location.

Totally fair! I think what was most interesting (and a bit jarring) to me was how much it was recommended by other RVers as standard advice -- and when I actually got on the road, there were plenty of Walmarts that wouldn't allow you to park to even shop. It's the disconnect between the advice that's given and the reality out there that prompted me to make this video. Hope this clears up any confusion. Thanks for watching and posting.

Limiting stays to one night makes a lot of sense and is very understandable. I was most surprised by the locations that didn't even want RVs to park to go SHOPPING. I found that pretty shocking.

@@OurMovingCastle An RV takes up more space in the parking lot than a car does, so there is at least one reason they can give for not allowing it. The Walmart closest to me was having problems with truck drivers leaving their semis parked near the edge of the Walmart parking lot when they were in town and spending the weekend with their families. That led to signs being put up to prohibit overnight parking. The COVID shutdown put an end to their 'open 24 hours' policy, so it became even easier for them to enforce the ban on overnight parking.

I will say that it was that the restaurant I mention in the video was perfectly fine with our rig taking up a quarter of their parking lot for an entire sit down lunch. There was so much more space at the Walmart. But it was fine. I got groceries in Columbus at a Giant Eagle instead (in a toad).
