    Make sure that Carly will work where you are, it seems it needs an Internet connection to work. After several attempts with various dongles Carly eventually had to refund all my money as they couldn't get it to work.

    I had a VW Golf, engine failed, a Passat, low mileage, just out of warranty, clutch failed, head gasket failed. My first marriage failed, my engagement to my second wife to be failed. I am now happily married for 10 years. I now drive a Lexus is200 for 5 years, never failed. Great channel. How about some more of your dance moves in the next video.

    There’s a difference between unreliable and deferred maintenance, if you buy a car that hasn’t had maintenance done or buy it at a point where all the major services will be due soon you will have to have them done during your ownership

    He acutally said in the video that the car was well maintaind. Only a few years missing from the service history. Problem is more likely, that the cars seems modern, but is already 14 years old. These cars are made to last about 10 years. After that the parts canon has to be loaded. It's not like pre-millenial cars that had original bearings at 20 years of life.

    @@DaveP-uv1ml I'm from Germany and I watch German car KZreadrs also from actual workshops and VWs are by far the most unreliable cars. This perception is a bit skewed because I think they are the most common cars on the road here and in many places but still. Especially because they often have incredibly bad problems for their age like several engine failures only after 40k km. The worst things are the vans/camper vans. They are SO expensive and are only built to last a couple of years. And I think that's the main issue. Like every big company nowadays those cars a throwaway items.

    I had a mk6 golf. It went on and on for nearly 100,000 miles in my ownership flawlessly. Until it had the same EGR issue (known issue for these) The problem most people have with cars is due to lack of maintenance. People buy cars they can’t afford to run, thrash them around then get rid of them when things are tired. You proved that with the MOT history alone.

    100,000 is nothing if the engine is looked after and the EGR is easy to replace.Not worth throwing away a car for that .

    I still have my MK6 1.6 Diesel with about the same mileage on it. I've never really had any issues with it, apart from brake disks when it was sitting for a while before I bought it, and ordinary wear and tear stuff. It is all about the maintenance.

    I'll add some of my own experiences, make of them what you will. All cars mentioned were kept stock: Polo 1.6 TDI 150k miles, no costs besides maintenance. Golf 5 GTI 370k miles, changed throttled body in the 1st year, no other costs besides maintenance. Golf 7 R, 190k miles, no costs besides maintenance. Golf 8 R 40k miles, changed steering wheel under warranty, no costs besides maintenance.

    @@user-ft2yz6fy6t On a VW Golf 2.0 Diesel mk6, you have to replace the EGR with a Genuine VW Part as a Motor Factor Part will be OK for 2 weeks then the dreaded EML returns, The Cost of a EGR Valve from VW Dealership is £620 Plus Vat for the Part alone.

    Years ago I was a driving instructor I had a 1.25 zetec fiesta I did a thousand miles a week and changed oil /filter once a month I sold the car with 235000 miles and the car did not use oil/water The car in the history of using it as a instructer car I had used 2 clutches and two sets of disc and pads Miles don’t kill cars , servicing or lack of kills cars

    @@Joe-ud2hb Ford blocks are forged by Yamaha but that doesn't make them developed/manufactured by them lol. Zetecs were developed by Ford and assembled/produced in Europe. I also owned a 1.25 Zetec Fiesta, Ghia version, was my first car.

    There are few lessons you should learn from this: 1. brake judder is almost always due to bad rotors, its where you start not where you finish. 2. Never buy unknown brand after market shit. (seems you did it again) so don't expect this set to last more than 2000 miles as well. i can tell you from my experience that on my Mark 7 Golf the original front discs lasted 120K KM , and were only replaced due to ware (thickness) so you only think you save money when buying after market rotors , in reality you waste.

    What a load of finger wagging partial tosh from someone who sounds like they have little experience with cars and maintenance. For a start, even if you buy parts from a dealer they're still 'aftermarket'. No manufacturer makes their own parts. This is a neat segue into OEM vs OE. OEM is typically Bosch and say Hengst for BMW as an example. Bosch will also make discs (rotor, ffs) which fit Ford Fiesta. If Ford didn't come with Bosch brake discs then that part is what's known as OE where the Fiesta is concerned. And as for unknown/unbranded parts? Looks like he's using Drivetec stuff which is budget based but still has to meet OE standards. So guess again. P.s. worn suspension components can and DO also cause brake judder though yes, typically it's more commonly down to worn discs with excessive run out but judder/shimmy due to worn bushings isn't as uncommon as you seem to think it is.

    You need to realise fake parts are getting into the aftermarket parts system. It's happening with all industries, I don't care what the box says or whatever little stamp it has on it. Every parts store now has to compete with online pricing, its just a race to the bottom and this is just another consequence of the price conscious world we now live in.

    He talked about unknown after market. Also a lot of cheap branded aftermarket stuff you buy on the internet is actually b-stock. The reason why sometimes branded products are so extremely cheap on the internet is that they are leftovers who have (often minor) imperfections and didn't go through quality control. They then get sold in the internet by some random sellers there. If you complain they blame it on anything, like for example that the products are only supposed to be installed by professionals.

    I agree. I've a '99 Polo, I'm the second owner and neither the previous owner nor myself let things build up like this. Four years? That's far too long for that kind of advisory! I'd have put that right ASAP.

    Oh please my old shit box corolla has 260000km and has never had any issues even though it's been all over south Africa with minimal maintenance and maximum abuse. Just services, tires battery's and regular servicing. Not one suspension issue even after being sent over speed bumps and dirt roads at 80km/h plus. It's also been rear ended and sideswiped a few times aswell as going 40k km between oil changes for the last few years due to being low on cash. Still runs like a sowing machine. A golf or Jetta would have needed far more work than my 2008 5 speed 1.4 corolla.

    You have very quickly become one of my favourite youtubers, and I can and do watch your videos over and over again. You've got the personality that fits you new full-time profession now, and having watched you pretty much from the beginning to now strutting your stuff in a workshop is truly inspiring.     I did a ‘visit’ to a place in Birmingham that made discs for cars. They said that there are three ‘levels’ of part - OEM (machined/balanced/rust protected) OEM spare (machined/balanced) and after market (machined only) it was a few years ago but it did show that you do get what you pay for 😉

    Our family had a 2010 golf for 5 years and I kid you not, we changed oil every 10 000 km and the engine blew up while going up the hill. It had 170 000 km... The interior was also falling apart. I then bough a 2011 BMW 320D after I got my license, Ive had it for 7 years now and the only thing that went wrong on it, was the crankshaft pulley. 150 000 km, the interior is like new. There is a HUGE difference in quality between VW and BMW and Im never buying a VW group car ever again.

    My parents had a 2012 polo Diesel. We brought it brand new. We sold it a month ago, with 250.000 kilometers on the clock. It never had any problems. 🤷

    @@nsoper19 My diesel hates short journeys, I dread the hateful DPF light coming on. If I'd known about all the clever eco friendly bits on the car, I would have stayed away. It's mental that they thought putting something on the car that means you have to drive extra miles and occasionally thrash it would be an eco friendly option

    I drive a Jetta 3 1995 and its bullet proof IF it breaks you can fix it with a bandage and it will probably run, I did the head gasket next to the road (my fault the water bottle was cracked) and its still running 1.5 years later.

    @@DeanofMachinesyes, he is entertaining but not reliable source for how to repair a car properly... eg tightening to touch and then 90deg must be some old style and not proper with current torque wrenches...when I saw this my confidence went to zero

    I successfully replaced the clutch on my MR2, did an oil change felt like a legend. All was great until the first drive and saw smoke coming out of the engine bay, opened up to discover I left the oil cap off, oil everywhere but thankfully no damage done.

    I have been a VW person since my first car which was a beetle. I have owned every mark of golf and without doubt the mk6 is the worst I have owned. Still have my mk3 VR6 which I love and heading out soon to buy a mk1.

    I had a mk5 golf and it had an early retirement, albeit very not looked after by previous owners. Fairly sure I see more mk4 golfs/jettas still on the roads than mk5s

    I'm a Skoda Main dealer Diagnostic Technician, and I can attest to the fact that V.A.G build quality and reliability is sadly now a myth, built on a reputation that was earned in the 80's. These days they have horrific electrical faults, water leaks into the cabins, and various common mechanical issues. I used to be a Ford Master Technician and pre eco-boost they were a damn site more reliable and from a technicians perspective a lot easier to work on! We're regularly diagnosing and replacing BCM's, ECU's, Head-Units, electric water pumps and my absolute favourite of them all interior cabin leaks into the footwells!

    I've got a 2014 Passat and I wish I had shares in polybush! Just a tip, the front rear bushes are separate to the wishbone and can be replaced without the wishbone removal. The 2nd thing I would recommend is never replace the OE metal work but simply replace the bushes with polybush. A set of front wishbone bushes are around £55 and you'll pay almost that for an arm of inferior quality. Anyway fab video and love your content!

    My Passat didn't even need a lightbulb replaced in the first 80000 miles and my current Golf have only had the water pump and some light bulbs replaced in 90000 miles. (Excluded normal service items of course)

    In general these cars are pretty bulletproof, however bad ownership and bad maintenance are probably why this car is falling apart. Clutch plus dual mass flywheel = wear and tear. Brakes = wear and tear. Bushes, control arms = wear and tear. All these other bits are all wear and tear stuff. Those engines will outlast any French or Chinese rubbish, but maintenance is key. It only takes one bad owner that misses a service here and a quick oil change there and that’s it.

    I recently scrapped my 1999 Peugeot 406 coupe 2.9L V6 I acquired in 2007 and knew the history from new. All the suspension parts were original apart from dampers. They lasted the life of the car as did the clutch. The engine was completely untouched. It had one cam belt change and long life spark plugs fitted in 2006. Water pump, belt tensioner, all ignition components, and ABS all original. No body rust but it needed new brakes , exhaust, the front the Brembos were partially seized and the clutch was near end of life so £300 weighed in at the local scrap yard. The only fault in my ownership was a was dead electric window! It was one of the last models with traditional non-CAN bus electrics system which had something to do with the superior reliability compared to the BMW, MB and VW stuff I've had. I currently have a Honda Accord. The 2.4 iVTEC petrol is probably one of the most most reliable engine ever made.

    Got a 2004 A4 saloon here, PD130 engine with 219k on it, yes the turbo has needed replacing and now the subframe is rotten but the engine is so good and it's still a comfy car! Couldn't recommend them enough.

    Loctite 243 is your friend when it comes to reusing old bolts and giving a little piece of mind that is things won’t come undone. 👍. Love your videos keep up the good work.

    Get a paint colour pen, and a lacquer pen, and put a small amount in a lid or something similar, 2-1 ratio, lacquer 2 paint 1, and mix together, and use an artists fine tip brush to apply, making it slightly proud of the existing paint, allow to dry, then wet and dry flat to original surface level, then polish it up

    I can't talk about reliability on anything that new, I usually buy my daily drivers as 300 000km+ clunkers. My commute is long so no point in burning money on new cars. That being said, I've noticed that the bare bones VW is really reliable, more fancy they are the more they break. So my go to is a Passat with low end 1.9 TDI, manual transmission and manual AC. Usually they get to somewhere between 500k and 600k before they fall apart enough to become donor vehicle for next daily.

    Did a complete brake swap, calipers, disks, pads, hoses, upper control arms, track rod ends. Got excited that it was ready took it off for an MOT, wondered why there was a bit of a 'shimmy' after the test, there was a bit more of a shimmy and noise, stopped at the side of the road - realised i'd not tightened the wheel nuts up fully and they were working loose. big slap on the wrist!

    Well if a 2005 A3, 2014 A3 and 2014 Golf 7R are older then indeed they are reliable. Never had an issue with them.

    I’ve had these problems on my Civic. New brakes juddered and other issues. Sold it for the same Golf as yours and it’s been perfect 😂

    I have a 2.0 litre Passat 3C2 170 TDI DSG (2007). Arguably THE worst car VW ever built. Sure it has cost me a bit to maintain, and they do need maintaining, but it is stock, has done 231,000 UK miles, still has a DPF and the EGR. Pulls well, is quick and still fairly economical at 45mpg which is good for its age. Has been a reliable car for the past 6 or 7 years BUT to get to a reliable state it has had a new Dual Mass Flywheel, new DPF, new EGR, new head (cracked), new electric rear brake calipers (seized), new EPB switch (twice), new radiator, new AC condenser, new alternator, new upgraded balance unit shaft (drives oil pump), new steering rack (refurb) in addition to all the regular parts renewal that owning a car for 13 years entails (brakes, shocks, control arms, suspension bushes, batteries etc.). Reliable yes, has been for many years now but boy did it take some time, effort and money to get to that point initially.

    The last decent Golf was the Mark 4 and even they weren't as great as folk imagine and nowhere near Toyota levels of reliability. VW (like BMW) are very good as perceived quality and making a car nice to drive but they have a mixture of clever technology made as cheaply as possible.

    Absolutely a myth! Perceived quality is good because of the materials you see but beyond that, no better than any other mainstream manufacturer. Possibly worse as there are various design flaws with the petrol tsi engines, timing chains, tensioners that they don't like to acknowledge.

    Those issues are all for pre 2016 TSI engines, the current ones have had no such issues or any for that matter.

    To be fair, half of the list were either consumables or due to the condition at time of purchase. In Addition, the deferred maintenance does not help at all... Plus, at this mileage, a lot of these items would be replaced already.

    I had a low milage, FSH, four year old 2004 GTD, utter nail. Turbo failed, head cracked, both replaced under a dealer purchased warranty, after a fight, head then failed again as did the turbo. The turbo was not OEM, cheap replacement, the head came in suffix A, B and C, which should have been replaced as a recall but was not. The failed replacement head was a suffix B not C. Eventually it was OK, it then started playing up again so it went back and was part exchanged for something not VW. It was from the VW dealer's warranteed used selection.

    I have a 2015 Passat TdI and it has been so unreliable! It has had the following repaired Clutch and dual mass fly wheel £1400 Cam belt and water pump £580 Rear brake callipers Front callipers ABS ring on rear left replaced ABS sensor on the front DPF replaced Two new injectors Fuel temp sensor Drivers and passengers front electric window switches Air con compressor has failed not yet replaced Buy Japanese and save yourself a headache

    The missus impression had me in stiches. I had a Golf 6 Plus with TSI 122 HP. On extended warranty - 2 x Turbo and waste gate, cam shaft adjustor, rear door control unit, water from tiny hole in a pillar, timing chain. Out of warranty - wheel bearing, engine mounts, 2 gear boxes, 2 x front wiper assembly with bearing, 2x xrear LED lights, and the turbo waste gate would get stuck and fart out the boot pressure on occasino while overtaking. Not a fun experience.

    An old sage always told me that warped disks don’t exist for road cars…. Race cars can warp their disks but it’s always pad transfer in road cars. Most times a burnishing process will restore the disk. Burnishing is “exciting” if done properly. It literally ignites the pad,lots of smoke, fire and stench. Very important to keep the pad away from the disk and drive a nice way to cool everything off. It’s saved many a disk over the years.

    I had a polo for 20 years, very reliable nothing failed that wasn't expected, i never paid more than £400 at the garage when servicing.

    I feel your pain mate, I had a mk6 golf gti, bought it for 6.5k, ploughed nearly 7k into it in a two year period which included a new engine and it still wasn’t sorted drank more oil than the Exxon Valdez.

    Absolutely a myth nowadays. Its called perceived quality, basically it's cheaper to convince people that your cars are well built by repeating daft advertising slogans ( "sounds like a Golf" etc.) than it is to actually build them well! I think its the same with all of the major German manufacturers.

    Sometimes, front disks are labeled for left and right, because of the way the holes are made in the middle, so they can be properly ventilated. Maybe this is why they became bad so fast.

    Have owned and driven 4 VW Cars during the years, family has had a A6 C7 for 5 years aswell. None of the cars have had any major issues during the time of ownership. Mileage has been all the way from 50k miles to 200k miles. Currently driving a 2.0tfsi stage 1 with 200k miles and a golf gte with 160k miles, 3 years of ownership on both without a single dealer visit.

    18:30 always support the suspension when applying this kind of forces. Always replace the bolt that holds drive axle and remember that this kind of bolts have very very high torque for example 200nm+180 degree turn. Great to see you having your own workspace to work in :)

    Great video, especially the re-enactment of Mrs Nev removing the pram from the boot. You could simply purchase a bumper protector. You can get black plastic ones that stick on with double sided tape. Will save future scratching.

    I had three Golfs a Polo a Passat and a Scirocco and suprise suprise I have had no issues apart from normal wear and tear items. All have done between 90 to 120000 miles and are serviced at VW. I have had both new and second hand diesel and petrol variants.

    Same here owned 3 v dubs apart from normal wear and tear they have been spot on unfortunately people confuse reliability with indestructibility and expect every single component to last a life time.

    I bought a 2013 Peugeot Partner Tepee Outdoor in 2017, aside from service consumables like pads, oil filters,it been faultless. also did cambelt ,Water pump, ideler (10 year replacement) until last week when 100 miles into a 150 mile journey an injector died. RAC were great, took us to a recommended garage who fitted a new injector while we had a pub lunch. Continued journey after repair. Other car is 2013 Panda 4x4 aside from consumable it’s had new lower wishbones and bushes. Both alway pass the MOT with advisories being dealt with after MoT by myself.

    Bought a VW UP in 2012, sold it in 2021 with 100.000 miles. Only changed the disks and the paths apart from regular maintenance. No issues at all.

    I had an older Audi A4 that had vibration while driving and especially while braking. I put on a set of plastic spigot rings all around. They didn't fix the problem but did reduce the vibration by about 50%. It needed a control arm and the discs were warped. But for a fiver on ebay, it defo helps.

    Small tip (dont know if this applies to all brands of cars): never fully tighten the bolts of the control arms with the car in the air. Tighten them with your hands first, drop the car on its wheels, then tighten the bolts (diagonally) with the perscribed Nm.

    This is early Wheeler Dealers with bells on. All us DIY home mechanics relate to this, Especially as I owned a VW Passat estate which had me putting my hand in my pocket on a regular basis. Worst car I ever owned, Had an 3.6 XJS for ten years that cost substantially less in repairs. Also had a brake judder on a Focus due to bent disc.

    My Golf 1.4 petrol manual is 7 years old. It’s done 65,000 miles. Serviced every year. New tyres and Aircon top up. Always 50mpg. Very pleased with it.

    Its such a strange one, ive always been a massive fan of VAG engines, especially the bulletproof 1.9 tdi. I used to buy sub £800 quid cars for my job and drive them into the ground, but they refused to die. I had an A4 that had 560000 miles on it, but it used to overheat on long motorway journeys, but it wasnt a problem as it just lost a bit of power. 5 x more audi a3 and a4 amd they jusr kept passing mots. I decided to splaah out amd buy a 2006 Audi A4 quattro 2.0 tdi 170 bhp many moons ago. Got it remapped and got supporting mods. After a year the ecu eeprom failed. Thousands to get it fixed, then the intercooler filled with oil. New turbo time. Then the oil pump failed. The car cost me short of £10000 before i gave up on it. I was broke and bought a volvo s40 1.6 petrol. Now that refuses to die. But my insurance is fracrion of what all audis cost.

    Make sure your workshop floor is suitable for a lift before you reinstall it. Maybe a compressor & air tools will help too. Keep up the good work, really enjoy your videos, just need them more often.

    Loving seeing your channel grow mate. On the list of tools, you should consider a decent compressor next - what you can achieve with air tools is great; an example would be an air-hammer with a balljoint splitter attachment - would’ve made that job a thousand times easier for you

    I remember everyone saying that mk1 Golf GTis were "over engineered", what a joke. VWs are good cars, but they're no better than other cars, I think older (up to the mid 90s) Mercs and Volvos were better built.

    I can honestly say I’m with you on this. I had a mk2 golf gti many years ago and it was brilliant. My parents bought a Touareg 18 month ago and i can’t believe how badly they made. Interior and exterior.

    Hub problems, engine mounts and brakes have been a consistent watch point for my 08 9N polo. I think every manufacturer has their problems, but VW is one of the good ones

    I had the same Golf MK6 but an 2009 model which had the older 2.0tdi engine from the later mk5s, bought it in 2017 and sold it at 2022. most reliable car I've ever had. Bought at 80,000 miles put another 80,000 miles on it. Just did servicing, tires, camblet, brake pads and discs, battery and also had to change the shocks and the pully tensioner

    I think Ford used to make some of the best cars VW ever made. I drove long distance private hire for a number of years starting around 2003 and used to put 80,000+ miles on a 1.9L VW diesel-powered Ford Galaxy every year. With just basic servicing and replaced consumables, our whole fleet of VW-powered Galaxys went on to clock up over 250,000 miles each without a hitch. Maybe VW make their own cars now. That might explain it. 🤔😄

    I have a 2006 Skoda Octavia Combi MKII with a 1.4 petrol engine with 80hp. It has done 360k km, but I've spent a tone of money on it, because the previous owner just driven it. For 3 years I had a same Skoda Octavia Combi, but with the 1.9 PDTDI engine, I did not spend a penny on that other than the oil and brake service. So overall it is only the matter of the previous owner.
