If DaVinci Resolve is multi-platform (Linux) and free, why short cut?

It's not so free, some of thier features need to be paid, and some of features simple don't work without nvidia videocards. It's all on linux, on windows it doesn't matter, what GPU you use. For linux better openshot or kdeinlive

Linux video editing is not the problem here.

Flame… I was cutting videos with a Flame.on Irix ( a version of linux) in 1994. You can get a version of Flame for either Linux or Osx today.

What next? a video about the lack of editing in windows where vegas or adobe don't exist and are never mentioned?

I use Davinci Resolve. it's a commercial competitor to Adobe Premier. But works on Linux

And literally only one of them is truly proffesionally useful software. And it still sucks and is unsupported on Linux in comparison to its windows and mac counterparts. In terms of quality video editing, linux systems are where the linux desktops were ~5 years ago, somewhat usable, but not quite there yet for a non-tech-savvy user, or even a purely productive/Proffessional individual. I have the hope that in another 5, I'll be able to jump to linux completely, and ditch windows and macOS. But we aren't there yet.

@@alltheframes9015 well 3 of them are professionally used software at the very least, DaVinci Resolve, Lightworks, and Blender. Although the latter probably isn't professionally used for video editing.

​@@alltheframes9015It depends on what you expect from free and open source video editors. I use Kdenlive the most and it completes all my private needs, even video editing for work. I also often use Davinci Resolve. I assume you meant him when you wrote sucks. The only drawback of Davinci Resolve is that it does not support some specific resolutions that I sometimes need.

@@alltheframes9015 preach, people just dont seem to comprehend how important it is for an OS to host professional software. i WISH i could jump full time on linux as well, but my windows machine allows me to game,edit,and make professional music production seamlessly.

I am only familiar with posproduction software for filmmaking in the like, and would like to know more regarding the subject for my firends who are musicians. I would like them some day to help them jump boat and switch to a Linux distro when the time comes.

This is windows xp running windows versions of linux apps.

Dude first of all your Debian ricing is crazy. Why did you make your window manager Ui look like Windows xp? If you want to discuss how good/bad video editing on linux is, why use crappy software instead of the (in my opinion) only relevant Linux supporting video editing software davinci resolve?

Eeeeeh, you are on windows, so you are running with a vm. WSL? What passthrough have you configured? And nvidia (old driver too, 525), in a vm, could work, but it would be way more interesting to see a video of how you did that. Why on earth would you do this on a vm?!? Video editing on linux works mostly great, BUT you do not have access to the megacorp softwares, thats about it. You did not even mention kdenlive... Makes me feel you in fact do not know very much about this at all.

Oh no thats a bare metal system running Debian 12. 525 is the latest available Linux driver. I've never had a good experience with Linux video editing although I am willing to be proven wrong.

@@LinuxPanic well, do not ever use debian with a desktop. Debian for servers is great, and that is it. Use something more up to date. like open suse, fedora, manjaro, evndeverous, or whatever if you want to utilize the full power of hardware in a graphical environment. Something where the repositories are updated frequently unlike what debian based systems tends to be.

@@mcdazz2011 Yeah, I would never use something debian based unless for servers. Never have, never will. I'm perfectly happy with my arch based setup. It absolutely works fine, but if you want to fully utilize expensive new hardware, you would not be able on debian or ubuntu. Just look at the example I gave, Nvidia 525. Linux driver release date: 03/30/2023. If you are ok with using close to one year old drivers, I don't give a sh*t. And this was just the nvidia driver. It's basically true for anything you have on the repositories for those distros.

@@marcusjohansson668 Running debian for many years on desktop and it works fine. Like you say debians for servers... well nowadays for gpu servers you will have the gpu issues as well. But 525 is not that old. It seems to do just fine :) Is it the best option for normal people use with desktop/laptop? Probably not. But from your stance it seems that you just like to hate others.

Well, you're using Linux and the video is not edited at all... it kinda proves the point, there's no editing aoftware for linux (which I thought wasn't the case cuz I'm pretty sure DaVinci is available for Linux...) am using Windows anyway. This video is a waste of youtube's disk space

DaVinci resolve is available for linux but without the H264 codec (and some more features), so practically it's not free for linux.
