    Someone showed me a love A2 from Barbra (very weak) so her score goes from 117.5 to 117.75! Also, Jessie J will be next as Beyoncé isn’t quite finished, but Bey should come after Jessie if she’s ready.

    Lol the situation is basically: Barbra: Gets half a point taken off for previous miscalculation Lara (rises another spot): =D Also Barbra: Earns half a point for discovery of new notes Lara (drops to her former spot): =/

    *Best Vocalists in the World!* She's definitely in that league and amongst the very top 👑 She does things with her voice that most vocalists can't even fathom doing! 🎸 And quite well-rounded as a vocalist. I get that her timbre can be quite polarizing but once you listen to her more and acquire a taste for it, it's so entrancing (low-key moreso than the usual timbres that are usually promoted in pop music/mainstream music). So glad that she didn't lose herself in the music industry 🙏 I must say, your CVSS videos are impressively exhaustive; I think 🎶 _absolutely everybody_ 🎶 can agree with that!

    Firstly, I love the pun, secondly I totally agree with you, although the reason why she went silent in mainstream music here in Aus after 2011 is because she actually did get lost, she herself said she felt that she wasn't enjoying it because everything was too generic and she didn't know what to write, that's why she started dipping her toe into music in the US and came across Dave Stewart. He's basically the best thing that's happened to her music career, she's not afraid to put her all into everything now and it shows by how much she experiments now. Not entirely sure why she went silent in 2014, it's probably because she met her husband Rod Busby, then she had Killian in 2016. It takes time to know how to juggle parenthood and a music career, she took a while to start coming back. I really feel she's entering an entirely new era in her music career that will last quite a while, she's slowly getting her voice back after 5 years of not gigging. We're seeing a new Vanessa and I really like it, she may not be able to go crazy with the A5 sustains and whatnot but she makes up for it in the amount of passion she puts into her singing.

    @@ZacharyT94 😅 I couldn't resist using that pun. That song leaves an earworm! I should've specified: When I mentioned that I'm glad she didn't "lose herself", I was referring to the tragic manner celebs lose themselves eg. how many celebs' lives are cut short, how many become addicted to drugs, are "suicided"/"accidented", the esoteric symbolism they end up promoting, selling their souls etc. You've imparted a lot of insight about her, thank you. And ultimately, it was leading yo that path. I'm so glad she left when she did. Please did that absence affect her status or is she regarded as a Legend in Australia?

    A true spinto sized voice; most of her highs aren't even her singing in true forte and the weight is still there. She has freedom from C#3-C6-C#6 which is really impressive (my favorite signature notes of hers might be E3 and G5). Vocally she's one of the best female singers in pop / rock today but sadly she's so underrated to an international audience. P.S. I'm really glad that your analysis includes and gives score for vocal effects which is mostly ignored by most of those 'experts' here. Most of the usual suspects can only growl or go airy as an effect, or maybe do some vocal fry a la Britney Spears. Distortion, rattle, creaking, screams, grunts etc all need a good amount of technique to execute them well. But Mariah and Whitney don't use them, so they don't count I guess...

    Wow!!! Vanessa Amorosi is incredible!!! I first discovered her back in 2010/2011. She has an incredible instrument! She deserves the title The Human Electric Guitar! She has such a powerful and metallic instrument. Her tone may be an acquired taste but her voice is so unique. Her voice is incredibly agile for it being a dark, heavy, and bigger soprano voice. Her lows are incredible, her mid belts are so powerful, and her upper belts/mix is so electric! Her head voice is not her strongest area but it's solid. A total free range of C#3~C6~C#6 is incredible! Soprano Queen of Low Notes Queen of Vocal Distortion Queen of Stamina Second Queen of G5 Belts Queen of Upper Mixed Voice

    I like Vanessa. Most of those who sing high are very intrusive and disgusting, Vanessa doesn't have that. I would not say that I can listen to it for at least twenty minutes in a row but sometimes you want something that fills the blood with adrenaline. By the way, an interesting fact about Barbra Streisand. She considers herself an actress in the first place and only in the second as a singer. Barbra herself said: "Singing is just a concomitant to acting". I was surprised that she considers herself an actress more than a singer.

    So basically “ringing”= resonance, “grounded”= support is present, “free”= decent vocal placement but not quite supported, and “tense/weak”= strain period.

  • @ThePianoguy89

    @ThePianoguy89

    Not exactly. Free has nothing to do with decent vocal placement. Free is exactly what it means in the word. Free means no unnecessary forms of strain, tension, and constriction. Vocal freedom is a better term than support. People misuse the term support. Support doesn't have a sound. It's a breath management technique. Grounded means singing with more core and depth. Not all grounded notes are free. Ringing has more to do with acoustic coupling and the formant. To be honest 90% of contemporary vocalists don't have a true 'ring' and it's not necessary for contemporary vocalists.

    You do an amazing job with these vids, I can't imagine how long it must take you. Vanessa has crazy chops, talent, and dizzyingly impressive range. Fantastic low-mid register and tone....However (and this not hate*), I get that her style is on the edgy/rock side but even then, I find she often oversings to the point that it destroys the essence of the song. Also her upper belts are not my fav thing to listen to....she sounds extremely "pinched" (compressed), is often shaky, and even pitchy as you noted. Sometimes she honestly sounds like a cat dying in tune. She does deserve immense respect, but her vocal quality is not of legendary status in my opinion, and it may just be that you cannot quantify a legend with numbers. I don't believe it's entirely possible to do that.

    (1) The human voice gets progressively 'uglier' the nearer one approaches the sixth octave (except in rare cases). (2) Since contemporary music often emphasizes high notes and wide range more than they deserve to be emphasized, this score is understandable. (3) This system, while well-researched, clearly caters to high notes and wide range and the current adoration of excess, along with the style(s) of singing that emphasize those. An Indian classical singer like Kaushiki Chakraborty, even though superior technically to any of these contemporary singers, couldn't possibly score as high due to that bias. (4) All who adore high notes and wide range and vocal excess should listen to the advice (paraphrased) of the great operatic soprano Leontyne Price to sing "on the interest and not on the capital".
