It's not cheating, just helps with not tearing up your hands as fast so you can at least finish the competition before you black out from blood loss

As a competitive gymnast grips do not always help just protect from getting rips they help to hold on to the bar and that’s how we do cool tricks!

They don’t wear them on pb because the bar is thick and not steel and if you had grips it would mess up our grip gymnastics is a sport with a lot of rules you never really know

It's not cheating because literally everyone uses grips. Men and women. Men use it on rings and high bar and women on uneven bars. Lower levels don't use grips, but once skills get tougher, grips are surely needed.

@@jackcoppola well, it seems like a joke, but old school gymnasts never used grips because they weren't invented, so it does prove that grips aren't strictly necessary. it just takes a lot of pressure off of a gymnast because now they don't have to train their grip strength over the hundreds of other things they train for. so, i am only half serious when i say it's a sign of weakness, because no way a modern gymnast is weak even if they use grips to ease the load on their hands.

Yeah, both of these things make gymnastics less impressive if you know about them. When people watch the Olympics as kids they assume the equipment is the same as any other set of monkey bars in a park, or regular flooring.

For those who think it's cheating, you should try these skills with and without grips... and the fact that you probably can't do it either way, should shut your mouth.

I agree with your point of trying it with and without grips, but one of the most frustrating things people say is "well, if you can't do it better yourself, don't complain!" So then why do you complain about bugs in games? Why do you complain when your internet is slow? It's the same thing. You couldn't make a better internet router yourself, so "just shut up". Complaining is good for making change, unless the complaining is just plain wrong, like in this case with the grips.

Or like using a belt when weight lifting. It doesn't assist in the actual lifting of the weight, it just provides better core support so the lift is better supported. And when every competitor is using it, because it is regulated to use, it's definitely not cheating.

If everyone is "cheating", then it's part of the rule.

Using grips just increases the standard of trick difficulty. It's like using sites on a bow. You don't need them but if you do it just tightens up your groups at longer distance and moves up the standard that everyone has to meet.

As a ex gymnast I can confidently say people won’t ever be able to truly understand some of the things we do and the same can be said about every sport it’s not just gymnastics

It’s basically telling a boxer to not wear wraps under his gloves. They’d finish the fight but his skin would leak out of their gloves

Okay as a female gymnast let me explain this from out side. Woman’s gymnastics uses 2 pieces of wood just like the boys parallel bars to make uneven bars. With the skills we do their not only for grip, but their also for safety. A lot of the skills you do after a certain level when your younger you start using girls because it’s just really hard, almost impossible to keep your grip and stay on without slipping. Sure the grips can slip sometimes. It’s not always a guaranteed security, but it definitely helps ALOT. And the judges and everyone who runs the books and the rules for gymnastics are the ones who okayd it. Because it’s safer for you to wear them when your flipping around on a piece of slippery wood.

Bro if I didn’t have grips I would have gone flying off the bars so many times. Even just the part with the dowel has saved me from falling off so many times. Grips are such a game changer.

Someone who did gymnastics for 8 years (age 4 to 12 year old) grips are a LIFE SAVER especially as a young gymnast, even when I was doing simple skills I would use grips because they are very helpful and useful, grips help reduce blistering and tearing and they help gymnasts have a firmer grasp on the bar when swinging and performing release moves.

Its the equivalent to using protective equipment in hockey or baseball.

I've learned so much about this sport through this guy's content. It actually makes me regret that I didn't get into gymnastics myself as a teen because that shit looks so much fun and also demands to keep you in great shape.
