Is Toronto the raccoon capital of Canada?

Raccoons can be found in nearly every nook, cranny and tree in Toronto - especially in the spring and summer months. But is Toronto the raccoon capital of Canada? CBC Toronto's Adrian Cheung looks at the trash pandas that call Canada's largest city home, and why they not only survive, but thrive here.

I once found 3 baby raccoons who's mother had died and so I took them in untill I found them a home because our wildlife centers here in Toronto wouldn't take them in becaue they had no room. I named them Zeus, Poseidon and Hades which were truly fitting for their big personalities. But giving those little guys away to their new owners was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do because they had imprinted on me. Although finding them was an amazing, surprising, frustrating experience it's taught me one thing.. Raccoons are definitely one of the smartest animals I've ever had the pleasure of raising and that fact makes them a nuisance to the general public, so it really overshadows how intelligent they truly are.

Raccoons do learn from their mistakes. Turn on the sprinkler and they get wet and they seem to remember that. Canada day, they were thinking about getting into my smoker. I told them no and go away and they really wanted me to open it for them. I got them to leave, but they came back in five minutes. I think they were drawing straws to see who wanted to open the 300 degree smoker. They looked at me, then the smoker and me and then the smoker. I figured if I turned on the lights they would realize how big I was and go away. Nope. They came closer. I guess they figured I could probably help them out with some pulled pork. Raccoons left with no pulled pork. There is no garbage available for them, so they don't usually hang around my property anyway.

There's a family of them that pass through my sideyard sometimes, I try to give them some bread when I can, to keep them fed during the winter times.
