Is This Wagyu Steak Worth $240?

We tried a 16-ounce, $240 A5 Olive Wagyu rib eye from Crowd Cow, an online meat distributor and the first to import Olive Wagyu to the United States. From the moment we unboxed the steak it was obvious it stood apart from the others, but was it worth $240?
Olive Wagyu gets its name from the toasted olive peels ranchers feed cattle. "Wagyu" literally translates to "Japanese cow" and there are some 300 brands including the most famouys, Kobe.
Olive Wagyu cattle are raised on a small island in Japan called Shodoshima, which is famous for its olive oil. Cattle farmer Masaki Ishii developed the breed as a way to use the by-product of olive oil production as cattle feed.

right before they slaughter the cow. they're reeeeeeal nice to it up to that point. & no, I'm not a vegetarian. I just find the way they talk about the cow's lifestyle humorous. "To Serve Cow." for dinner, that is.

It’s just to tell the cow was born, fed and killed in Japan. You can hear sometimes « American wagyu »because Japan exports some young cows every year, and these cows are fed and killed where they were exported. These countries try a mix between the traditional Japanese breeding and their own. Hence the different marbling and taste. Japanese wagyu A5 is too fat for me. A4 is perfect.

@@AbsoluteFidelity Personally I'm not fan, it's way too rich for my taste buds, it's heavy on the palette and has a very fatty/greasy aftertaste. When I first tried it I was blown away but my boss who with a little alcohol went nuts and kept the very expensive meat coming, I instantly got sick of eating it after a few bites. I know I'm going to get flak for this but I find AAA Canadian Prime Rib Eye Steaks to be just perfect in consistency and flavor, they're also pretty cheap at 12 x 16 oz steaks for $130USD.

Tajima beef won last year. But that's only because Matsuzaka didn't join. Matsuzaka is pretty much the best that they probably don't care about wagyu competitions anymore. However, Matsuzaka beef is something like national secret, you need to get a local to guide you to one. Otherwise, you'd just get beef grown in Matsuzaka. There is a difference in quality between Matsuzaka Beef and beef from Matsuzaka just like how there's a difference in quality between Kobe Beef and beef from Kobe.

Honestly it's fine because he's speaking English. There's nothing wrong with pronouncing properly a word while speaking a different language to it, but it's kinda silly to correct people in this context imo especially if there's no comparable English version of the word. It's like if a Japanese person is speaking Japanese and says "pinku" and you correct them with "pink".

It's exactly what he said. Olive wagyu is a one bite wonder. After the initial bite, it gets disgustingly greasy and rich. Even the A3 he mentioned is too much to enjoy as a steak. The American/Australian wagyu is your best bet for a tender beef that you can keep eating day after day.

exactly lol when i was a kid, because i lived in a place where we got access to different kinds of beef around the world. used to love wagyu, you name it i probably ate it. but now a days i prefer angus beef over any wagyu. wagyu beef imo if you eat it often enough it gets sickening.

@@drkInxgud I know right? I sell wagyu for a living, and what I don't sell, I eat. After a while, I reached a point where just the thought of eating it makes me feel sick. Nowadays, when it comes time to eat wagyu, I try to find a way to get rid of as much fat as possible. Even made it into a jerky once. LOL.

@@iPat6G You need some kind of palate cleanser between bites if you're gonna eat more than 4 ounces at once, and with A5 it's much better to have more surface area seared. One of my favorite preparations is actually aburi ngiri, the vinegar and sugar in the rice really help cut through and compliment the richness.

Same with the best beef brisket bbq in Texas. It's so unbelievably delicious if you have it occasionally, but its sooo rich and fatty, its hard to eat every week. A lot of BBQ pitmasters prefer Tex Mex or other local food less intensely decadent than BBQ. And even then BBQ in Texas is eaten with raw white onion and pickles to cut the richness.

DMS the yu in Hyundai actually isn't pronounced like the yu in Wagyu. Korean popular romanization is kind of inconsistent, both 여 and 유 when coporated in words are all romanitized as 'yu', but only the later sounds like the yu in Japanese. Because of this, Hyundai is supposed to be read like "hy-e-ondai", hyeondai.

Old post, I know. But I agree with this. In fact when I tried A5 for the first time, I was actually disappointed, and also felt nauseated the more I ate because it's literally just fat with a hint of beef. It's pure overkill with fat which is kind of disgusting. I also agree that A3 is a good balance of beef and fat as well.

Smart. I've had A5 wagyu before. It's about 1.5" square piece, 3/8" thick. A total of 7 pieces. By the time I'm on my 5th piece, it's no longer delicious. Too much fat. Meat with that much fat content, it should be an accommodation for your meal, not your main entree. So your A3 recommendation is correct, at least for my taste.

I've had A5 Wagyu before. It was good, but too fatty for my liking. Even after it was cooked, it almost seemed like it was covered in fat. It was very soft and delicate. I prefer a more meaty taste though, so I like a regular medium rare prime instead. Dog loved it. I gave him some chicken after I gave him some Wagyu. He spit the chicken out, which I never see him do, and he looked at me like "give me some more that that A5"

It is rare, wagyu is just produced in Japan. Basically from a Japanese cattle bread and raised way back thousands of years in their land. The same concept can be describe wine from Italy, they have the best wine in the world there as well their cheese is one of a kind too and there where you can find expensive cheeses.
