The marriage mart was where the eligible young ladies were basically put on display in an attempt to catch a husband. This was usually done when the lady was 18. In this case, Penelope was 17 in her first season which makes her 20 now. The actress who plays her is actually 37. Usually the ladies were in search of a suitable match but usually the higher the man's rank the better. Of course, the brides usually had a dowry, a sum of money promised to whoever marries her from the bride's father. The agreement was usually a written contract between the father and the potential husband. Sometimes the woman was not consulted at all. That is why the separate bedrooms for couples. Sometimes they hardly knew each other and there was a door in between so they could visit when trying to have a baby. Sometimes there were only public appearances merely for the sake of appearances. If a family had a high rank but were broke, they might offer a daughter with little or no dowry and hope that their rank was sufficient to entice someone with money. Usually the wife's duty was fulfilled once there was a male child to inherit the title. However, they often had more children due to the high child mortality rate. Nowadays, the phrase "an heir and a spare" are used, which is why Prince Harry named his book "Spare." William was born to be a future king, while Harry seems to feel he was born in case something happened to William. As far as the UK is concerned, the Princesses only inherited if there were no boys. However, that changed recently when the Parliament voted to keep girls in the line of succession. Princess Charlotte will be the first girl this applys to. In the past, the boys would have been first regardless of their birth order - George, Louie and then Charlotte. But with the new law they will succeed in their birth order. Once George has children, they will come before Charlotte and Louie. Back to some of your questions...Widows could take lovers if they were discrete. Wives, after producing the necessary heirs might stray as well, but again discretion was of utmost importance. Disgrace and scandal on the family name were not tolerated. The higher your rank, the more you could get away with. And men, could basically do anything. Mistresses were kept by providing a home, servants and payment of clothing, food, and other bills. Please do not call yourself stupid. It is not stupid to not know something. It is only stupid when you refuse to learn. I only know half this crap because I have been reading romance novels since I was 12 and I am now 57.

"Is Mama Bridge down for the swirl???" 🤣🤣🤣 Also, I can totally relate to pausing right in the middle of a show/movie to look up some character/celebrity's zodiac sign? LOL. And finally, I rewatched your carriage scene reaction 3 times. You swooned like me over "in fact, preferring sleep because that is where I might find you." SOOO romantic. Then your "Oh, we're doing this. How far away is the house?" LOL. Your text of "letting Colin play the human pianoforte" HAHAHA. And YES - that consent nod meant everything to so many of us women! Can't' wait for your part 2 reactions!

@@justjordan497 Yeah it's definitely closer to $700K. Back then it would have been enough for a person to live comfortably for the rest of their lives (most people could live modestly/comfortably on 30 pounds a year).
