Is This The World’s Most “Fun” 24 Hour Race? | GMBN Vs 24 Hours In The Old Pueblo

Спорт

Rich Payne is out in Tuscon, Arizona to take on 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo, a popular race that's got quite the reputation for being fun! Not only is the race challenging because of the fitness, nutrition, and equipment demands but it's also home of the Cholla, aka the jumping cactus! But, this wasn't an easy ride for Rich, unfortunately, it didn't go to plan..

@Frankie Noir There's a million things to cause someone to fall out of a race before you need to be bringing up anti-vax dumbassery. Its not controversial. Y'all are just clowns. Exertional rabdomyolysis is not a rare condition for athletes. Its not a common overuse injury (because that's what it is, an injury). But its not rare. And has been around far longer than you retards have been going on about covid vaccines.

I lived in Tucson for 3.5 years and did the 24HOP twice, both times as part of a co-ed team focused on fun. In fact, the woman in the chicken suit near the beginning was on my team the second time I did it. It really is an incredible event and it was awesome to see a GMBN video with some familiar faces and trails!

Rich, in 2013 was hospitalised with Rhabdomyolysis. This came from a prolonged intense bodyweight workout which resulted in macro-tears in my biceps and triceps. My body flooded with myoglobin, collected in my kidneys, and caused permanent damage to my left kidney. I was initially in the hospital for 21 days. The tears in my muscles developed into Compartment Syndrome in both forearms which required surgical venting. Also, a plural effusion resulting ina collapsed lung from the fluid and myoglobin and creatinine. I also had the bloody urine, but it came later in the hospital. After stabilising during the 21 days in hospital, the dialysis began on an outpatient basis. It is sucha strange feeling as it is happen ing. Luckily, I didn't have to continue long-term. Please don't downplay the seriousness of your event, and keep on top of the potential long-term effects. If I can help, I will.

I'm curious to know more about what, if anything, could have been done differently. Did this come down to pacing and reducing the effort early on or getting more calories and nutrition in? A 24h race is not something I could ever do, but I'm interested to know more about whether you see anything that you'd have done differently in hindsight?

  • @gmbn

Hey Cameron, as always there's a few question marks and it's probably a big combination. He was probably still a little fatigued from Strathpuffer a few weekends before this race, then there's time zone changes, temperature changes and sleep cycles to factor in on top of perceived effort vs the bodies energy stores. A very complex puzzle to balance which on this occasion didn't quite play out as planned. We're very proud of his incredible effort regardless though!

Nice job Rich! I love these types of videos. How about doing the race next year as a team. Maybe Neil. That would be interesting.

Wow, you did the right thing. Probably harder to go seek treatment then to keep going. You are a freaking Beast!! And tougher then hell. That is a good lesson for all of us. Epic video - thank you.

Wow, glad things turned out ok, had you tried to ride through the Rhabdomylosis it definitely could've been life threatening. I can definitely understand the breathing trouble if you're not used to riding in the nearly zero humidity of Arizona, the dry climate takes some getting used to.

That's one of my favorite riding areas. I'm glad you got a chance to experience it. Now relax and get healthy so we can watch your next round of insanity!
