Is This The Toro Killer? The ULTIMATE Review of the New Scag SFC-21 Inch Commercial Push Mower

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

What is the best Commercial 21-inch push mower? We had an opportunity to demo the pre-production prototype of the new Scag SFC-21 at the Equip Exposition 2022 in Louisville, Kentucky. After launching their 30-inch tank-like push/walk-behind mower last year, Scag is following it up with a beast mode 21-inch commercial push mower. This video WILL be controversial! Did Scag flop, or did they hit it out of the park? Time will tell, but we think lawn care operators NEED to pay attention to this mower. If you are looking to add a Commercial Push Mower to your fleet this spring, you just might need to buy the Scag.
Toro has their 21" Commercial Heavy-Duty. Exmark has the Commercial 21 X-Series. Snapper has the downright ancient but reliable 21” Commercial Hi-Vac and Ninja to choose from. How does the Scag SFC-21 compare? Watch to the end to find out.

*I'm with you 100%. I absolutely hate buying something inferior to something that is often vastly superior & already exists (& obviously can be acquired). It may be just 1/4 to 1/8 the price of the superior (aka: commercial) version, but why not take that 20%-25% and put it directly toward the purchase of the superior version?! And always buy heavily discounted used (or demo-ed) commercial equipment is possible.* _FYI: Take John Deere, for example. The quality/durability of the 'John Deere' homeowner lawn equipment is _*_absolute garbage._*_ John Deere, Inc. should be ashamed to have their brand name slapped on those turds. Go w/a nice used piece of commercial lawn equipment over a new piece of homeowner equipment 100% of the time (if possible)._

Looks like an awesome machine. Personally, for my business, I do not like individual wheel adjustment for cut height. I prefer mowers with one lever deck height adjustment. Right now, I'm enjoying the Husqvarna w520 for my walk behind, but it could be bigger. If Husqvarna offered a 30in, I'd be very interested. There are so many good mowers out there.

I have had my 7hp SFC-21 for 3 days done 3 yards and it really is a Toro Killer. Did a test strip with all sharp blades and the HRC 21 is the worst mulcher with a finish cut, the commercial Toro with the Kaw motor still gives a nice finish cut BUT still when the grass is very dense like on Tiff 419 still leaves a slight snail trail. The SCAG is perfect edge to edge is a very level cut! Best thing is the larger diameter and wider wheels and the deep deck. Going to try it is some really high grass as it is tough to even get the motor to labor! Only complaints are the safety lever for the BBC bail (going to remove it) and smaller leaves when on a thick and dense turf tend to be pushed by the front of the air dam not going under the deck to mulch.

Thanks Check very much for the demo and detailed explanation, but price point is extremely high for a 21". In my opinion, could be a Toro killer in that class (huge tank, unbelieveable deck and great control system) but you are paying for it. I bought a Toro Timesaver 30" for $1,400 this season and like so many others, love its looks, power and durability. May be a tough sell...

  • @hellocheckco

Yeah, it's definitely a high ticket! The big difference is that the Toro Timesaver 30" is still a residential-grade mower. If you go to the commercial version (Toro Turfmaster 30"), the price goes up to $2,500! When you think about how most commercial grade 21" mowers are already close to $2k, I truly believe this one (based on specs) is the clear winner. We'll see how it holds up in the field! @@hellocheckco Let's not get carried away with the horsepower rating. The toro 21" commercial is/was capable with the Kawasaki or Honda engines. The Honda was about 5.5 hp. I have this Koehler engine cv224 engine and it's okay. Nothing extraordinary. Could use a bigger air filter like the Kawasaki. For Skag to get really serious in the smaller push type mowers they need to figure a way to lighten up their 30" SFC model and get closer to the weight (or lighter) then the Turfmaster of Toro.

Just can't beat the old Ariens 21 with its 3n1 capability. Loved the large diameter rear wheels and the castor front wheels but have to admit the self propel mechanism on the Ariens was junk, continuously needing repair. They quit making the Ariens so I went to the Honda commercial. I miss the side discharge and ease of maneuverability but the Honda self propel is top notch. The Hondas are outrageously priced as well so I've paid for one but never again. I'll build my own from used parts first.

One think bad about the Scag mower is most of the weight is in the back and when you mow on an incline the mower wants to do wheelies. I own the XMark the 4 hp motor has more torque and I have no problems cutting 8 inches of grass. The Scag might have more hp but less torque. The reason for the 4hp is less pollution.

HELP. (Question for anyone). I love my old Toro AWD (all wheel drive) mower with BTAH (blue traction assist handle) but the new Toro AWD mowers (21472) have baby carriage handle without BTAH. How do I add BTAH. Thank you. Toro's BTAH (Blue Traction Assist Handle) converts Toro's PPM (Personal Pace Mowers) (which requires a person to push Toro's heavy mower forward before the self-propelled drive kicks in) to ((easily without effort) controlling Toro's self-propelled drive with just your fingers and hands without moving forward). This is needed on steep hills where you need the AWD Toro mower to pull you and this powerful AWD mower up the hill without any effort on your part. The powerful Toro AWD mower can do this only with BTAH and not by Toro's PPM (extra exercise mode). Without BTAH you end up pushing this heavy Toro mower up the hill even with AWD. It is a shame that Toro has gone (woke not work) with this useless new Toro curved baby carriage handle. IMO. Thank you for your help and understanding this Toro (back breaking) mower issue.

I have never been a fan of overpriced commercial 21" mowers. Actually I operate a 22" Toro with a B&S 190cc that cuts like butter with St Augustine here in Houston. With that said, this mower definitely has my attention. I love the deep deck and more horsepower with the possibility of mulching like crazy. I wonder what the torque rating is. Stamping the deck will likely cheapen the build, but it should make it a little lighter. If it ends up being as good as it looks, I'll probably added to my Timemaster setup and give me a true cut for extreme thick lawns. Good insight, can't wait to see the updates.

The model here is vastly different than the one I saw on the website. This one appears to be a fab deck while the one on the website is stamped. Of course the stamped deck is a slightly thicker gauge than my Honda commercial and appears to be an incredibly beefy machine overall with an actual blade brake clutch like Honda's 38+ year old "Roto-Stop." Honda's the original though when it comes to blade brake clutches, please remember that. Thankfully not the belted systems that Toro is known to use. The one drawback is the transmission is nothing like my Honda where it's shaft driven from the engine and hydrostatic but 3 speed and belt drive is better than Toro's slipping belt style personal pace for durability. If I had no choice for Honda in the future in Canada like in the US (Honda's been quiet for the Canadian market), I would seriously consider SCAG's walk behind 21 and 30" units. In fact, I am incredibly happy SCAG made its 30" unit relatively easy to service compared to Toro/Exmark and I got to see one of my competitors using theirs one day and I asked what he thought of it and he seemed impressed even if it was a bit heavy. He had a Toro running that day too and said no huge problems from either one but the stories I heard about Time Master 30" makes them out to be more "TimeWasters" or "MoneyEaters" due to poor systems in place on them.

Just under $2000 heck no. A 21" at that. Then you have even more controls to work. Not to mention it's heavy. For what, to say one have a commercial mower ? This must be the "nothing will go wrong " edition of mowers and one will never have to change the oil belts or blades for 10 years/1000hrs . As long as I have to bend my back or squat to change the height of the mower deck, absolutely no 21" mower is worth that much to me. I would love it if someone could explain why a 21" mower cost so much. Then I need all of you guys who quit your day jobs, to go back to work, so I can afford to cut my own grass again 😁

Depends ; it’s a much more commercialized mower than the Honda. It will operate quicker with greater cut quality with these features. If you have all small lawns with small gates in the Northeast you’re aware there are no available 21” mowers that don’t require massive battles all day long. This is the first machine out there that addresses these issues which is a real market issue for many lawn care providers. This machine fills that niche quite well and the Honda does not.

I have 21" Honda 200cc with blade brake and used it commercially with no issues entering anywhere. Use it on mulch full-time and have never once used the bag no matter how high the grass is. Why would you pay that much for the Scagg and worry about stupid idle when you can just get blade brake. The blades are still spinning on that thing. Bigger motor and fuel tank, so what. Anyone that uses the Honda HRX217 will no doubt bypass that and go straight to a 30 inch.
