Is This The Real South India?! First Time in Madurai
Madurai is a city mostly famous for things you can put in your mouth. Stumbling upon this restaurant was one of the best things that happened to me in South India. It was bloody delicious. Also I met a weird Shiva devotee and ate the famous Jigarthanda.
enjoy, Mike x

Touching feet is a form of practising caste as well. In the varna system, feet are considered the most unclean part of God. Hence, shudras were considered to be born from the foot. The fact that people still consider foot to be unclean still astonishes me. Please don't pass such practices to the next generation. Your hands and fingers have more bacterias and shit than feet.

Mike, your video on your South Indian tour was absolutely captivating! It beautifully captured the warmth and hospitality of Tamil people. However, let's be mindful of the language you use. Referring to Indians as "Boys" harks back to a bygone era. In today's world, let's honor and respect the Tamilian culture by choosing your words thoughtfully.
The milk ice cream and that 30-year-old restaurant sound amazing. Do you have any tips for finding the best local food spots when traveling?

Problem with recommending a good restaurant in Madurai is... They scattered around the city. You were standing at literally middle of the city which has very small restaurants and if you want to reach a good one you need to walk and take dozens of turns and it is extremely hard for anyone to give navigation for a walking person for a 2 or 3 kilometres of distance. So the local boys stunned.

Probably about 18 hours, working in three shifts. A Parota restaurant usually won't start service till lunch time (so around 11 AM). The kneading a cooking would start at least 4 hours in advance.

@@SheshankReddyS "Probably about 18 hours [...] start at least 4 hours in advance." ========================. 1. I AGREE that it is hard work. 2. HOWEVER, they do NOT knead the dough continuously for four hours before cooking it on the griddle or flat-top. The kneaded and rolled-out dough is allowed to rest (in order to rise) for several hours before it is flattened into circles (again) immediately before it is cooked on the gridle/flat-top. 3. That means the workers do get substantial breaks/rest-time during the work-hours. It is simply humanly IMPOSSIBLE to work non-stop for such long hours in the heat in places as hot as Madurai.
@SheshankReddyS
3 ай бұрын
@@ex.hindu.now.atheist you're absolutely right. The dough has to be mixed and then rested. They are not working continuously. In either case there bound to be cooks working in two or three shifts for a restaurant that is open from 11 AM to midnight. I've spent time observing the kitchens at Anjappar and Adyar Ananda Bhavan in Chennai, and Bengaluru. Depending on the expected volume of business, the Parota team starts as early as 2 PM for dinner service. It takes time to roll out and make those individual laminated balls of dough. Each cook makes hundreds of them every evening.

thali is a hindi / north indian word so most people in madurai would not be aware of the term. you should ask for "meals" if you want the same thing down here. also, madurai is famous for non vegetarian dishes which is why they had no suggestions for vegetarian restaurants. also, ask for hotels as restaurants are referred to as hotels by most people
If you had turned back from the jigarthanda shop and walked 500mts. backwards from where you reached the temple, you could have found a proper vegetarian meals hotel called the "Modern Restaurant". You could have had a sumptuous South Indian veg meals. Don't miss next time.
