The worst part about all this is that Jesse Ventura has lived one of the most interesting lives in human history. At various points he was a Navy SEAL, an outlaw biker, a pro wrestler, a Hollywood action hero, a mayor, and a governor. Why the hell would you have to distort or exaggerate ANYTHING about a life like that?

Fun Fact: The building he walks into at the end is the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, at Queen's Park in Toronto. It was famously used for the cover photo of Rush's 'Moving Pictures' album. Weird coincidence: the real Jesse Ventura once worked security for a Rush concert in Minnesota in the '70s.

“I am Jesse the body, Jesse the mind, and Jesse the eternal spirit Ventura.”
That line about “where else but America could you find a guy that started as a wrestler and ended up as a governor” is the first thing I hear from this movie and I already knew something was off, Japan, Antonio Inoki.

Also, he has a really simple, dull story in real life (Al even said that on his Behind the Music episode), so that's about the only way to make a biopic of him. Not a lot to talk about when you're straight edge and have the simplest band history ever.

I remember that like a month before this movie came out there was Michael Jordan: An American Hero biopic movie that released on Fox Family? I'd imagine they made this schlock to ride on it's coattails without really putting any big effort. Like the MJ movie sucked but it got a few things more right than this. I personally remember Nils Allen Stewart as one of Dorian's henchman in The Mask, crying and then confused reacting to the Mask's hammy fake death and awards show nonsense were priceless. Also was on the receiving end of the botched "Omae Wa Mou Shindeiru" moment in the live action Fist of the North Star.

You should see The Buster Keaton Story (1957). It didn't even TRY to tell his life story, and Buster knew it from the start. There is not one moment depicted in the film that has anything to do with his biography. Buster helped with the stunts, but star Donald O'Connor (really miscast) admitted being terrified to attempt most of them. The weird thing was, Buster, even at his advanced age then, could still do most of the stunts, as he proved on several variety shows from the 1950s. The movie depicted only one wife played by Ann Blyth (Buster had three wives), and they made sure that Blyth's character had no resemblance to any of Buster's real-life wives. Which didn't help when Buster's second wife sued Paramount's asses off, even though I understand the case went nowhere. The only good thing about the film, Buster would remark later, was that it paid for the ranch that he lived in with his third wife Eleanor until his passing.

This movie acts like Ventura stumbled randomly into politics when he had been an activist and mayor of a city in Minnesota for a while before he ran.
I watched this when it aired, while a friend of mine did the same from his own place...God help us. It was bad enough that we still crack in-jokes about it today. Both of us, to this day, cannot begin to understand why this was made at all, let alone the way it was.

Everybody gives Kenny Omega crap for wrestling a nine-year-old girl in Japan. But nobody ever held Jesse Ventura accountable for fighting eight-year-old Little Billy Goldberg on "Nitro" in 1974. Double standards much? Damn IWC tribalism!
I never heard of him - wrestlers I know include Hulk Hogan, the Undertaker, and of course the Ultimate Warrior plus those who had a movie career like the Rock and John Cena. But him, I never heard about. Just weird that guys like him, or Arnie, could become governors despite not really being suitable for the jobs.

You missed them duck hunting in the Woods. Not sitting in a duck blind n the water. Then finding the duck laying in the woods
You know you're off to a great start when in your biopic about a man with a very distinct gravelly, Upper Midwest-accented voice, you cast a guy who not only doesn't look like him, he doesn't even bother trying to sound like him.
I'd love to see your take on Slacker or Waking Life
As a Minnesotan, I knew of Jessie Ventura first as the governor (who was a wrestler) and then learning more about him as a person as I got into pro wrestling was...*baffling*. And of course, this movie confuses things even further, given what absolute nonsense it is.
5:14 To be fair, he didn't say the guy would be good, just that he would be desirable. That's not the same thing.
The thing is, there's some actual interesting stuff they could have used regarding how WWE screwed Jesse over. Like how he was trying to get the wrestlers to unionise and Hulk Hogan was the one to rat him out to Vince McMahon, or how he was lied to about royalties on video tape sales for his commentary and ended up winning in court for a decent sum. If they had taken these events and turned the dial up a little on the dramatisation, you wouldn't need to have the Heartbreak Kid Johnny Flamingo use Bret Nart's famous Nartshooter against him to steal the win.
