The first 1:30 of "Blessings Upon the Throne of Tyranny" by Dimmu Borgir. Straight up savage riff with incredible lyrics

Probably the verse riff of "I" off of Ulver's "Nattens Madrigal". That intentional terrible mix makes the guitars feel like razorblades in your ears, and the riff is just so simple and awesome!

For me it's the second riff from Night's Blood (the first one where they use tremolo playing). In my opinion, that riff is the single best musical description of winter anyone has ever written.

As a Floridian, I definitely dont know Winter. But I agree on that part being badass. Makes me nostalgic for when I first got that album in 2001.

Mother North has to be up there for me. Supremely catchy, yet still mesmerizingly atmospheric and dark.

I use to get drunk listening to Panzerfaust. To me,the first three songs are different genres. And I cant be the only one who really likes Sno Og Granskog,can I? I doesn't fit but hell if it isnt awesome.

I LOVE the chorus riff from Mayhem's Funeral Fog. Especially the part right after Attila says "FOG!" Makes me bang my head so hard I almost break my neck every time.

oh yes that whole album is full of absolutely gorgeous harmonies, that's kind of the essence of the album and why I revisit it all the time

My fav riff is the main one of transilvanian hunger, I love the drone notes with the melody on top

The intro to Lord Belial's "Realm of a Thousand Burning Souls Part 1" on their album "Enter the Moonlight Gate". It makes me want to split the sky with a hammer 🤘

That whole album has awesome riffs. Its underrated thats for certain.

Many great riffs in black metal. One that comes to mind is the opening riff from Burzum's "Beholding the Daughters of the Firmament". It's the two most simplest power chords (B and C on the fifth string) playing back and forth, and that too on standard tuning. The progression in "Hvis Lysett Tar Oss" by Burzum is also beautiful. Another one is the closing riff from "Prosperity and Beauty" by Gorgoroth. One of the best moments in black metal history was when that song was played during Wacken Open Air 2008, at the center of Europe. The people who got to see that were lucky.

Freezing Moon intro riff is most memorable black metal riff (and the best).

Jesus tod - burzum. Just this haunting, infectious sequence that absolutely epitomises the genre at it's best.

That is so difficult to say. From "Graven Takeheimens Saler" the intro riff is actually very strong as well, but I seriously would need to think a few days about the greatest Black Metal riff of all time.

for me the greatest black metal riffs are Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger main riff as well as the riff at 2:04 in Skald Av Satans Sol Vothana's Sư chém giết (the entire song is a masterpiece) and Hoang Gia I Leviathan's Sardoniscorn Grand Belial's Key On a Mule Rides the Swindler Abyssic Hate's Suicidal Emotions Totale Vernichtung's Die Schlacht and can't forget Lost Wisdom, Dunkelheit and Det Som Engang Var from Burzum!

Wow, Simon! Those two guitar parts blend over each other so beautifully! I love beautiful/emotional Darkthrone Black Metal Riffs!

Opening riff from “Yekteniya I” for me. Epic, melodic, dark. The riff that brought me into black metal and I haven’t left since. Still appreciate all kinds of music and other metal, but this riff made me realize black metal is for me.

Either the ending of I troldskog faren vild or anything from Opeth's first album. Dawn's slaughtersun is also incredible

I love The Somberlain, the riff is dynamic enough to not get repetitive, but still beautifully strung together.

It's a very meditative riff. Simple yet very effective

I’d say Withstand the Fall of Time by Immortal has some of the best black metal riffs ever made in one song.

My latest lose-my-absolute-shit-in-the-car riff has probably been the one closing out "The Path of Realisation" by Albionic Hermeticism. Honestly, that whole album (Psalms to the Father) is full-to-the-brim with riffy goodness, and their collab album with Ynkleudherhenavogyon also brings some major heat.

Any riff from Unhallowed. The Christraping Black Metal riff continuously captivates me with its brutal simplicity

I find that Bvrzvm's Jesu Død (opening riff), Darkthrone's En Vind Av Sorg (2nd riff), and Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (half way riff) are among my favourite riffs.

Where Dead Angels Lie is a cold track.

Dissection - Thorns of Crimson death, that short riff just before the acoustic break as the solo kicks in

Man. I have quite a bit to choose from: Ulver-hymn 3,after the first bit of vocals,and repeated once more later. Borknagar-Origin,the bit after "man is greater than a microbe." Ivar Bjornsson and Einar Selvik-Makta Og Vanera For All Tid,the verse riff. Darkthrone-Utterst I Livet,the first riff. Also by Darkthrone,the first riff on Majestic Desolate Eye. Enslaved-In Times,the riff near the end. Satyricon-Du Som Hater Gud,the bit in the middle or so. Also have to mention Darkthrone again....the end riff of Kathaarian Life Code...when I first heard it,it made my hairs stand up. Hell yea. 🤘

Mine is almost certainly I am the Black Wizards by Emperor. I play it all the time as a tremolo picking exercise, and it’s just a classic. Inquisition is up there too with just about any riff Dagon has written.

the nights blood after the acoustic part is actually that accoustic part but played on electric amplifier. and it seems it was written not by notdveidt but by zweetslot. one of my fav riffs too

The Red Heifer by Grand Belial’s Key. Riff begins at 5:24.

I just discovered a band that gets 40 listeners monthly. The song is called HYMNR-Part II go ahead and have a listen that riff is awesome.

the ending bit of crushing the scepter by gorgoroth

solid choice as with several early 90s Dark Throne songs. However, I would pick the riff(s) from Eerie Howling Winds or Det Glemte Riket from the Ancient Svartalheim album.

Yeah, Dark Funeral have a habit of recycling other bands' stuff.

By the way, this riff can be heard in the composition "Vobiscum Satanas" by Dark Funeral.

Hard to say but the main riff of God Of The Darkest Dawn by Sargeist and Hans Siste Vinter from DarkThrone are on top for me,

My favorite, personally, is the chorus riff of Skald Av Satans Sol by Darkthrone. It starts around the 2 min mark. It is genuinely just the musical embodiment of winter and evil. Runner up would be the intro riff to Wolf And Passion by Ulver.

Close between Jesus' Tod since it was the first I ever heard and all of the riffs in My Journey to the Stars Burzum riffs in general are some of my favourites in BM.

Some parts of Moribund Oblivion - Ruins of Karashehr is one of my favorite black metal riffs.

ea, lord of the depths intro.

On the Kvist song MM Lekam... the riff that's perceeded by these dissonant organs is one of the nastiest black metal riffs I've heard. The first riff of Unleashed Axe-Age and the turn-around riff on Into the Infinity of Thoughts are also close contenders

For me it’s I am the Black Wizards by Emperor. That main riff and also when it’s slowed down at the end of the song!

"striborg - beneath the fields of rapacious blood" to me its all about cold black atmosphere and the first time i heard this riff it was like a witchcraft for me and til this day it still gives me the same eerie feeling

Carpathian Forrest: Its darker than you think

There's a couple: the tremelo riff on Thorns of Crimson Death, which makes me picture freezing rain pouring down. Also the "chorus" riff on Exercise in Futility I; feels like triumphing in a meaningless battle.

For me it is definitely in my top ten BM riffs list, along with Transilvanian Hunger and Slottet I det fjerne. Also The Riffs from Satyricon's Mother North and Mayhem's Freezing moons intro are excellent. And don't forget Dissection's Nights blood and Emperor's I am the Black wizards

idk its hard to choose but i would go with Nargaroth seven tears are flowing to the river, the distortion parts.

I meen my favourite black metal band are dissection and the riffs on nights blood and thorns of crimson death would be up there (take your picks which riff those songs are packed full of great riffs), but in terms of capturing the pure atmosphere of black metal and everything I would say the main riff from jesu tod by Burzum. If someone was to ask me about black metal not knowing anything about it I would show them that riff and song as a whole.
