Is this the BEST Hardwood Floor Finish? Bona Traffic Naturale with Engineered Walnut Review.

In this episode, Jordan takes us into his personal home where he installed walnut hardwood floors from Hurst Hardwoods and finished them with Bona Traffic Naturale.
Overall, he has been very impressed with the durability of the finish, but warns that the soft nature of walnut will result in dents and scratches if you have an active family and pets.
The matte, non-slip surface looks so much better than the plastic fake look of the common aluminum oxide finish that is so prevalent in mass produced pre-finished hardwood floors.

    I had glue together Pergo installed. The installation didn't use enough glue so I had some water issues. Probably solved by the new click lock style. I had 2 Rottweilers that weighed over 110 lbs. After 10 years they never made a scratch. However the Pergo was slick and I had to add throw rugs to make sure they didn't slip and hurt a leg or hip going around corners. A friend who installs great floors kept asking how the floor was holding up with the big dogs. After 5 years he stopped asking.

    Can I install this over oak pre finished engineered hardwood floors? It's wearing horrible! I installed it 3 years ago and want to lose my mind every time I look at it. Was expensive and installed perfect but wear layer is problematic to say the least.

    It depends on the home and region. -- In the Pacific Northwest, I like strand woven bamboo. Really, you can do anything there. Shellac tends to be rather nice. No dirt to destroy the finish, and it's super easy to touch up. -- In the Southwest, white-oak on top of a wood sub floor, amber shellac with aluminum oxide cap coat. The dust gets everywhere and turns any other finish into a haze. The prettiest wood finishes I've ever done were in the Southwest. Extreme chatoyance. 90 degree days, fans going, 15% humidity. You can wipe on shellac in a 1lb cut and it'll be dry by the time you finish the room. One time, I did a pine floor made of old train car planks. Sanded down to 320 grit. Provincial stain. Clear shellac 1lb cut, 4 coats. 2 coats of sealcoat, 2 coats of satin A.O. It doesn't wash out in the light. It just pops. But it's one of the most labor intensive finishes I've ever done.

    I live in a vinyl siding wasteland. Expensive houses - all two-story "Colonials", but the exteriors are plastic. I'd love you to do a take-down of vinyl (siding, windows, soffits and trim...). I prefer Hardie for look, durability and quality, but you may have other options worth touting.

    Very interesting info. Sorry I found you just recently. I installed a nice wood product, brand name Kahrs, Brazilian cherry in the main areas of my home 16 years ago. My husband told me then cherry is soft. Lol he was right, 8 grands & 1 great grand later, we have lots of dents and scratches to prove it. The floor is still beautiful but in hind sight I would have chosen a harder wood.

    Glue to try Echo those above, like this type of review. Very personable and give insight into how things last when you use them. I put bamboo in part of our last house, used urethane glue. Appreciated the strength and resilience, but it could be a nightmare to work with. I'd open a can and sometimes find the first few inches got enough moisture to harden and I'd need to cut through it. Then I'd need to use it up within a few days or it would start to skin over and thicken. If any dripped on the surface of what I'd put down it was a race to clean it up before it started to cure and really became a mess. And when our dog ran in to say "hi" and stepped in it and tracked it over the new surface, ugh. Then on our current house when I put in stranded bamboo (very high janka numbers) I tried a different glue, "Meta-Tec MS Plus" from Taylor. Found it much easier to work with and to clean-up, and lasted longer once opened. Nice adhesion, good resilience and sound properties. Took more for coverage than was initially estimated, but 4+ years later I'm happy with it. I did still use urethane on the stair treads, wanted the highest strength and adhesion. If I do it again, I'll probably go with the Meta-Tec again. MIght want to check into it.

    Not on floors. I had a butcher block counter top finished with Rubio in one of our past houses. I loved it so much that I was going to use it on this floor, but my flooring installer had just had a rough time on another job with Rubio's durability, so we went with Bona. As far as environmental and health impacts, Bona is Greenguard Gold certified. They use it in hospitals and schools specifically because it is so low in voc's. I think they are both great products, but I still need to do more with Rubio on flooring.

    I've always wanted to Janka test engineered floors. In my anecdotal experience I've seen more denting in engineered floors than solid of similar species. Even though the ply is Birch and should be stronger than the walnut in your case, it may be allowing more surface compression. This could also vary from manufacture to manufacture depending on how their ply is constructed. Would be a cool Build test!

    The downside to prefinished floors are the joint lines between the boards get a dirt buildup that is difficult to keep cleed with pets and kids. Site finish makes a more monolith surface.

    I know. I wonder if the "microbevel" could be eliminated in a pre finished floor? My guess is no, since it would be hard to get rid of the inevitable high/low condition.

    Wood floor density is diminished by the softer birch core layers (lack of support). Thickness if veneer is a factor, but engineered floors will dent easier than a solid because of softer core .

  • @JordanSmithBuilds

    @JordanSmithBuilds

    5 жыл бұрын

    That makes sense for woods that are harder than birch. In this case, the walnut is softer than the underlying core. However, it would be fun to test different woods in their solid vs. engineered state as well as overlay thickness. I bet your point would be proven, especially in the thinner overlay versions.
