The eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake is a design seen on all Mexican coins. It dates back to Aztec times when the Mexica or Aztecs moved into the valley of Mexico. When searching for a place to build their capital, they saw an eagle perched on a cacti eating a snake. They called the site, Tenochtitlan, which became their capital and would remain their capital for the next 200 years until the Spanish conquest. Tenochtitlan got its name from Tenoch who was the leader of the Aztecs at that time.

If the ones you would see in the Goonies, are Spanish colonized Mexico. The Mint in Mexico city was established in 1535, the first mint in the Western hemisphere by Conquistadores for the king of España. Most pirate themed teasures, depending their set sailing of origin, from Mexico & from South American countries. So depending on the ship, the year/era of mintage, origin of the mint/country on the coin would determine the type of coins in the Goonies! The ship was called El Infierno, The Inferno...stole the treasure in 1632 with doubloons, jewelry, gems & other coins.

This is definitely up there as one of my favorites as well. I was fortunate enough to have bought one at spot from Provident 2 years ago. In hindsight, I should have gotten more, but they would have been the re-strike version anyway. Interesting that the 200 year anniversary is coming up next year. Hope they make a special commemorative release at that time.

What a great video on 50 pesos. Love to see others appreciate Mexico's beautiful gold. Nicely done.

They are beautiful, I picked mine up in Monterey Mexico in the mid eighty's gave $400.00 for the coins, the only mistake I made was not buying ten a month for about two years. Absolutely beautiful coins.

Iturbide who actually made Mexico independent from Spain is regarded as a traitor, while Father Hidalgo and Morelos are credited with the independence of Mexico. This is why if you have any Mexican coins, you will always see Hidalgo and Morelos on them. 1810 is celebrated and 1821 is forgotten. The role of Iturbide in Mexican Independence is relatively forgotten.

Regarding 2:42, the Mexico gold 50 pesos were not issued continually from 1921 until 1947. Instead there was a hiatus from 1932 until 1942. Their minting resumed in 1943.

That coin is bar far my favorite gold coin just from watching this video !! thank you so much Im going to join you on that bucket list challenge mate! Great video !

Got a 1 oz. reverse proof ms 70 2018 gold libertad last Jan. and 1/2 oz. RP and 1/2 oz. P gold libertads. Love them, I was able to pick up a 50 Pesos gold 1946 today, love them all but I must say those RP and P Libertads got my vote to.

It's my favourite gold coin too, Backyard Bullion.

The first gold coin I ever had. Sold it in 2010 when things were bleak. I will get another in time. Great content as always. And I always watch to the end 😎🇪🇸

Interesting! I'll have to start adding some to the stack, I'm primarily in buffalos at the moment. I find it funny that this gold piece has face value of 50 Pesos while I got some 5 Oz silver 10,000 Pesos pieces in the 90's ;)

Just got a 1946 50 pesos gold coin in the mail today, it was a random date and I was lucky to get a real date. Love it.

They looked silver on camera at first! Dream coin, as I love Mexican metals. Just got a gold dos pesos. And have several type1 and 2 Silver Libertads and fractional. Great content! 😠😠😠😠👍

I currently own a 1947 coin and I've held it for ages in my box when it was handed down to me. Decided to do some research and here I am! Thank you for all of the information! I figured out that it was most likely a restruck, but i found an odd certificate of authenticity of jewelers and I'm hoping to find out from them if I struck bigger gold than I thought!

@@BackyardBullion For your information the year with the lowest mintage for this coin is the year 1943, not 1921. Hence besides its unique feature of lacking the 50 pesos on its face, it is also the year with the lowest mintage, making it doubly up collectable. For whatever reason they only minted 89,400 coins that year.

I have one and so heavy to hold. Love it. 20 peso also lovely.

I recently picked up a 1900 half eagle, very high mintage but beautiful coin. I was inspired from some of your older videos featuring pre 33 gold. I've enjoyed vintage American coinage since I was a kid though (half dollars). Older gold coins certainly hold their appeal. I've also considered buying a new (2018) Libertad. I had one online to buy, but gold prices have gotten pretty rough. Might just keep putting money back and find something nice at a cheaper price later. I have a suspicion one of these days gold will hit $2000. But I also know gold always inevitably dips. Thanks for the upload, stay safe

I picked up that 1911/21 Veinte Pesos from apmex a few years back, had it graded. MS63 was not a bad deal. Now It compliments my silver Aztec Calendar set. Yes the whole set plus a vintage Aztec silver round piece.

Great video! 1947 restrikes are more “copper” color like the eagles bullions, and original ones tend to be more yellow like the buffalo’s... And the minted ones between 1921 - 1931, 1943-1947 tend to have their “scars” too... “Independencia y Libertad” are still strike on one side or the other at random. Hope will help. God bless

@@BackyardBullion My dad is a numismatist and he tells about back in the 60's he could have got a roll of 50 pesos for dirt cheap back then. Hes 72 years old and he had all kinds of rare coins over the years. he had a 1793 Large cent chain cent in AU or better condition years ago and he sold it to get our first house in the late 70's. (i was still not born yet) Today its worth $100,000 or so... It makes him sick when he sees all the coins he had to sell years ago and now there crazy expensive today. I m not a numismatist but im a metal stacker as a way to protect my wealth and a long term investment.

My comment I had the whole collection and the colour is beautiful.

I have the 1945, 50 Pesos gold coin, and the writing on the side, (outside circumference of the coin), lines up the same as for your 1946 coin. So you may be correct about identifying the re-strike on the 1947 coin.

Love the 50 peso but prefer the design of the 20 peso. Will be acquiring a 50 peso later in the year for sure. Great vid BYB. Anything mexican is awsome in my mind

I agree with you the 20 pesos is a better design with the iconic aztec calendar. Nevertheless the 50 pesos in my opinion is the best gold coin of the world.

The 1 oz gold Libertads are nice too

Its on list to purchase next year in 2022!

Beautiful coins

I like them allot too also a big fan of the 15g size. Only issue i've noticed is with .900 fine LCS around me don't want to pay fair value under normal times if you wanted to sell. For that reason I am only after 24k going forward.

Yeah, there are some dealers that only want 24ct or 999 and anything less they are not keen on.

I discovered these when they were 1500s ... Ive got all restrikes but , got about 16 of them love the design ,plus the extra .20 extra gold ...one of my favs ... can't get em for under 2k these days ...

Fantastic video with fascinating historic content. Do you know what the rules/restrictions/difficulties are for bring physical precious metals back to UK from Mexico. I regularly travel there on business?

Well, gold is easy because there is no import tax into the UK. The only thing you would have to do is declare you have more than £10,000 worth of cash or equivalent wealth on you when you enter - its just a declaration - no tax but they will know you have it!

I watch you video's to the end as you take the time to make it the least I can do is watch it to the end especially as I enjoyed seeing some beautiful gold coins

Sooooooo.... i have put this into my shopping cart no fewer than 8 times this week only to back out. 2k is a lot to spend for me right now (or anybody) and my main concer was the fact the vendor was choosing the year. Additionally I had no way of confirming condition. But oz for oz its an amazing piece of history and one of the lowest premiums I can find currently. I may very well pull the trigger today. Anyway just saw this video post and the title made me want to jump on it. but have to work so ill be watching later on my lunch break! Keep em coming!

Absolutely beautiful coins - thank you for showcasing them. I just picked one up during Liberty Coin’s Black Friday sale for $2185! Spot was ~$1794 and I got $21.85 in eBay bucks from the purchase. I literally paid $0.30 total over spot for the coin 😎 they sold out within 30 minutes.

Yeah they're awesome. I don't think I'll ever have one unless gold price falls. Don't think any local stores have had it or the vente peses for quite some time either so accuiring it with postage an all is just buying gold too expensive. Other great coins are French 100 franc (yeah quite high numismatic value) and personally I like the older Krugerrands - partly for personal reasons of my time in South Africa when I was kid but I also like the springbok very much. There's however something about the newer Krugerrands that just isn't as nice as the older ones. I got a 1983 and a 2018 both in very nice condition. While the 2018 in some respects has a higher degree of finish and "security micro text" it also clearly shines though that someone remade the design on computer where the older ones is clearly an analouge job made the old fashioned sculpting way - the modern one is lifeless in comparison. The font on the newer also looks like some serif font you'll find in Word etc. where as the older style is more vintage type writer font. Especielly the "U" isn't as nice as the older one. But for the prices. Even though I just bought two Danish 20 kroner (just over 1/4oz each) I've actually been hoping for the last 8 years for the prices to take a hit - that is how long I've been interested in gold and silver. The lower the price the better - just let the price fall with no bottom so I can buy more I won't be sad :D I've no plan selling my gold before many years from now so I don't mind falling prices.

i have a 50 centenario. in corn gold colored. unfortunately I only find the copper-gold colored ones on the market.

A few months ago there were some really good sales on these coins, barely above spot price. I couldn't get myself to pull the trigger and I regret that decision today.

@@victorfrankenstein50202 No telling for sure, but the premiums will settle once demand has been satisfied. I can't tell you the timeline on that, either demand is settled once everyone has what they want or when they get priced out (rising prices). You can set up an eBay search alert on these particular coins, say $50 over spot and you will be notified when the deal comes up so you don't have to search for them every single day. Like I said, a few months ago they were selling on eBay for just a few dollars over spot and that will probably happen again, but who knows what the gold price will be when it does happen.

Backyard Bullion I have seen one ounce silver rounds with the design but one plus ounce in gold would be too sexy. I read that the viente coin isn’t minted un Mexico but rather in tge US and UK. Can you find the ‘MO’ mintmark on one?

Before Father Hidalgo decided to revolt against Spain, he was rumored to have seen the Virgin Mary in a vision who appeared to him telling him to raise the banner of rebellion and protect the Indians from the unscrupulous Spaniards who exploited them. She appeared in a dress of gold, hence was born the Angel of Independence, the Virgin of Guadalupe who became a symbol of independence.

Great additions to your stack, the 50 Pesos is a beautiful gold coin. I don't think it's a big difference if you have a reverse or obverse oriented edge lettering.

@@BackyardBullion For me this difference is "normal", here in German all 5 and 10 Mark coins had these variants. Some collecters care about it if they want both variants as a set.

Mexico revolted against Spain in 1810 under Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a parish priest who was put to death by the Spanish in 1811. One of his supporters, Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon took up the baton for independence. He proclaimed Mexico a republic but he also was put to death in 1816. The Spanish general who put Morelos to death was Gen Agustin de Iturbide, who ironically turned against the Spanish and proclaimed Mexico independent in 1821. A few months later, Iturbide proclaimed himself emperor of Mexico and began a 10 month despotic reign. So while Mexico became independent in 1821, the independence of Mexico is celebrated in 1810 rather than 1821

Thanks for the history. I checked the comments to make sure nobody had already made this correction. "Final Independence" was won *from Spain* in 1821, but then half the landmass lost it's independence to the US. Then they had to win their Independence back once again... from the French.
