Write up.
Last year Holly and I made a pilgrimage down to Nuclear Blast for our very first taste of what Nuclear Races had to offer. It impressed us so much that day that we booked back onto their flagship race in May 2022 Nuclear Rush. We made our way down with our daughter Isabelle and Granny in tow so that we could have a go on the Rookie course before doing the full 12k ourselves.
The day itself was stunning, blue skies and warm temperatures amplifying the enjoyment.
So when we got there it was noticeably a different entrance to Blast, a different part of the farm. The event Village by 10 was booming and waves were starting to get ready. We had a little walk around bought some merch from the stalls and started to get ourselves ready.
First we did the Rookie course with Isabelle, so let me say a few words about this. Nuclear have really gone all out to create a course which is accessible to young kids to young teenagers. The obstacles are just the right level and quantity and they are manned by very supportive and understanding marshals. This was most apparent to us as our Isabelle suddenly took a dislike to water and mud on the day and was coaxed around the course by sudo pushy parents and very supportive marshals. In the end Belle very much enjoyed herself as there was a lot more climbing and crawling type obstacles which is more of her cup of tea. After we sent Isabelle and Granny off on the big tractor Holly and I started to prep for our wave.
The start of these races is much like a lot of OCR, you get popped into a pen and put through a warm up with the MC and the fitness girls. This is always a bit of a laugh and never overly strenuous at Nuclear. Without to much of a to do we were off out onto the course.
It was clear quite early on that the obstacles came in groups, or zones. So we would hit 5 or 6 and then be a bit more running. We would fluctuate between running through the woods and out in open fields. The sunshine and time of year meant we were backdropped by stunning countryside.
Ok so rather than go through the obstacles (which the video does a good job of doing) I will point out the bits that stood out.
Firstly the water zone. We had been looking forward to this as it contained a few gems of the course. 1. The zipline…who doesn’t like a zipline, 2. The Swingading 3. The Jump and 4. The death slide.
All of these were just fantastic ways to have us thrown into the water multiple times in a short period of time. Just fantastic.
It is worth noting that there is absolutely no shortage of mud, gunge and sludge at nuclear and they have you drag yourself through it on many occasions.
It is very clear nuclear have spent many years engineering many of the custom based obstacle rigs that frequent the course, some are really fun to play on, some can be quite challenging also.
We were really quite amazed by how much had been squeezed into this 12k course it really was impressive. Pound for Pound it is by far the most diverse and interesting OCR we have done, and we’ve done a fare few by now.
By the time we finished dinged the finish bell and got our medal we felt like we had been on royally good adventure. We had a nice open air warm shower before making our way back to the car. Again we come away from this event buzzing.
While I try and keep my videos concise and as short as possible due to the sheer volume of obstacles this video still ended up being 18 mins.
What I liked
The obstacles
The Frequency of obstacles
The lack of bottle necking and queueing
The staff, they were just brilliant especially the MC. Lovely chap
FREE PHOTOS!!!!
The whole mantra is cool
The brand is cool
Warm Showers
The vest is a much better choice than a regular T-shirt
What could be made better
Honestly there isn’t much on this one, im struggling to actually think of anything!!
Conclusion
Ive done many OCRS of all different flavours by now, but Nuclear has recently become my favourite. The entire thing from start to end has you buzzing and it really does stand out from the rest.
If you ever get the chance I heavily recommend having a go as it really is a good day out.
